A relative of mine, named Joseph Rutherford, was a sea captain who operated out of the Newbury area circa 1800 both before and after. He married Rebecca Fifield ,I believe in 1808, and settled in Salisbury,New Hampshire to avoid the war of 1812. He operated a dry good store there. Subsequently he moved to Alexandria Virginia and later to Troy,New York where he passed away in 1838. I've thought that there might be a tie-in to the Rutherford's mentioned in the 1790 and 1800 census for the area but have no conclusive proof.
