Neil Thompson was born 20 July 1904 in Glen Cove, Coleman County, Texas. By 1925 he was in Alamogordo, Otero County, NM. I have traced him through Military records here: 1927 Oregon 1929 Colorado 1942 Washington 1943 Massachusetts 1948 Yuma AZ 1949 California? He died 2 Jan 1949 Corona, Riverside California in the Norco Naval Hospital. He did not live in Corona, but in San Bernardino, California. His obituary stated: Obituary: Tuesday Jan 4 1949. San Bernardino Daily Sun Neil Thompson Neil Thompson, 43, of 879 Sierra Way, a veteran of World War II, died Sunday at Norco Naval Hospital. A native of Glencoe, Texas, he had been a resident of San Bernardino and of California only seven months. Surviving are a widow, Mrs. Alyce Thompson; three brothers and five sisters in the east. He was a member of the V.F.W. post in Yuma, Arizona. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10A.M. at Stephens AND Bobbitt chapel. Interment will follow at Sawtelle cemetery, Los Angeles. (end) You can see from this that his wife's name was spelled ALYCE. His death certificate had her named simply as Alyce D. [For years I thought it was Alyce O, not D., but FLGenWeb LCs determined that it was Alyce D. In those days it was explained that married women often used their maiden name as a middle name. The D was made a bit like an O but upon closer inspection it is most probably a D. After Neil died in California, his wife Alyce (Or Alice) moved to Florida. My sister said she moved to Polk County, Florida. She died in the 1980's according to my sister, but a few years later she told me she died in the 1970's. I have been unable to find a death certificate that fits her close enough to be proof certain. Later, my oldest sister said Alice (she said it was Alice not Alyce) lived the last of her days with her brother in Polk County because she had arthritis. But I do not know if she died in Florida for sure. Maybe she died while traveling. My sister said Alice was from "back East". She said she was some type of Executive Secretary in Florida before she died. She said her brother's name was something like Frank or Frances. Knowing that Neil was in Massachusetts in 1943, I asked the state to run a marriage check for Neil Thompson to Alyce Clara unknown. They did for $35 and said no marriage record. On the search results they suggest I contact the County in which they were married. Well, I do not know that information. FLGenWeb found this Alice C. Thompson in Massachusetts with a brother named Frances and a last name beginning with D. 1920, 1930: 1930: Alice C. Donnly born 1916, Middlesex, MA I need to go to the FHC to get a good copy of the census. But basically 1930 said: Worcester Co MA John Donnly 52 Nellie L. Donnly 46 Neil Thompson Military: 06 537 258 October 24, 1927 to June 7, 1929 Also June 17, 1942 to February 3, 1943 In: Pendleton Oregon. Out Vancouver, Washington. Donnly 8 Earl Francis Donnly F. 3. This was near Ft Devin, where Neil may have been discharged from the Army. I have tried to get photos from both sides of Neil's headstone in Sawtelle National Cemetery in Calif. I've had no luck with RAOGK. There is a chance the reverse side contains the name of Alice. I've learned that Alice was 5'6" tall. Very intelligent. Blonde hair, blue eyes and beautiful. She lived in Lake Wales of Polk County FL. She played the Piano. Thompson, Neil, b. 07/20/1904, d. 01/02/1949, PFC 416TH SIGNAL CO 8 AF, (ARMY) Plot: 245 19/RE, bur. 01/07/1949. The VFW building in Yuma burned down with all the records. I cannot find any VFW or whatever to answer me in San Bernardino, California. So there I am to date. What am I failing to do?
