Trying to help Robby pin down the ancestors of Cheney Capen. Looks like one of these might be the right one, but this has me stummped. I have never seen a surname Tertius before. The online dictionary doesn't even give a definition and I can't find it before 1750 other than in Dorcester. Can anyone tell me more about this? I think that Samuel is more likely Samuel Capen the third, and his surname is not Tertius. I only find a few entries for Tertius before 1750 and they all are Samuel Capen Tertius and John Capen Tertius in Dorcester between 1725-1750. Eventually there are given names of Tertius, but it is rare to see it as a surname. The other factor is that it was very rare for persons of this era to have a middle name. Any help appreciated! Hi Robby -- The LDS pilot website has images of the family in the 1870 census (image sent off-list). They also appear in the indexes for 1860 & 1880 (images n/a on the site). Maria ("age 34"), keeping house, living w/ husband, Cheney CAPEN in Spencer, Worcester Co., MA ("age 44"). He was a farmer with Real Estate valued at $2100, and Personal Estate valued at $1000. Sons were Lewis M. CAPEN ("age 15") and Melvin CAPEN ("age 4"). All 4 were born MA. The NEHGS has birth record for Melvin C. CAPEN (vol 179, pg 218) -- on 24 September 1865 -- in Spencer, MA -- to Cheney and Maria CAPEN. He was a Farmer -- both were born in Spencer, too. They also have his marriage (vol 363, pg 351) -- on 11 November 1885 -- in Charlton -- to Cora J. DOANE. Both were born in/ and residents of Spencer (registered in both towns, it appears), and both age 21. He was a farmer (son of Cheney and Maria), she was at home (dtr. of William & Hannah). Performed by Pastor G.O. Crosby of Spencer. They also have the birth record for Lewis Milton CAPEN -- vol 92, pg 222. He was born 12 Aug 1855 in Spencer -- to Cheney (farmer, b. Spencer) and "Hannah M." (b. Spencer) -- I presume that M. is for Maria, her nickname?? Lewis' marriage record (vol. 345, pg 268) indicates that he married in Brookfield on "un 10" 1883 (= 10th day of unknown month??). Bride was Isabella BEMIS -- her second marriage (his first). Difficult to decipher names of her parents "Mr. & Mrs. ___?) Not BEMIS, though -- perhaps this was her married name from first marriage? He was 27, she was 30 (b. England). Hope this is helpful!
