To fill in some blanks, Achorn Road is near the town of Dunbeath in Latheron parish in the very far north of Scotland. It's about 30 miles south of Wick, so they are some distance apart. By the 1880s though people moved back and forth from Latheron area to Wick much more frequently than in the prior decades, as the roads in the county had improved greatly, and the area was prospering during a huge boom in herring fishing. By the end of the 1890s the boom was turning into a bust (don't they all?) and most of the young people of this area were seeing nothing but a dim future on the farm, and even that seemed bleak. So Caithness ended up with a "lost generation". There was a huge migration out of Caithness into the cities of the UK but mostly into Canada, the US and to a lesser extent Australia. Family tree wise, Angus G's father was named James, whose father was named Angus, whose father was named James! Thanks to all of your shared efforts and kind contribution of time, I have a very good picture of Angus and his son Robert now, even a picture! I am writing to the Army records office to see if I can come up with some additional details of his service during WW II, and possibly his disposition post-war. Thanks again.
