    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] "Military Installations in MA"

    3. Hi again, When I went to find a brief history of Ayer, MA, I found something on the bottom of this page which might interest someone. "Military Installations in MA" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Devens,_Massachusetts While looking at that list, I noticed that the "Hanscom Hospital" is mentioned. I know there have also been changes at that facility, so I'll look that up. This page says that "Hanscom Field" is also known as a "public airport." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanscom_Field This paragraph states how the "Field" was named: Hanscom Air Force Base is named after Laurence G. Hanscom (1906-1941) in honor of the pilot, aviation enthusiast, and State House reporter who was killed in a plane crash at Saugus, Massachusetts when he had been lobbying for the establishment of an airfield in Bedford. Laurence G. Hanscom was a reporter for the Worcester Telegram-Gazette. Hanscom was active in early aviation, founding the Massachusetts Civil Air Reserve. The base was named in his honor on 26 Jun 1941. It appears that the airport was used by both the "Army Air Corps" and the "Air Force" during WW II. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanscom_Air_Force_Base How many had a relative who lived at "Hanscom Field?" ( I believe my father lived at "Westover" with the "Army Air Corps" before he went "overseas." ) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westover_Joint_Air_Reserve_Base Betty (near Lowell, MA) Here is a very recent, newspaper article about "Hanscom Field" http://www.wickedlocal.com/bedford/news/x124592189/Hanscom-Field

    3. Betty While I didn't have a relative who lived on Hanscom Field, my uncle worked there many many years. He was a graduate of M.I.T., a reservist in the Marines, and his work was fairly secretive but had something to do with radar. I don't know for sure when he started working there, sometime after WWII as he had been one of those Marines who fought in the South Pacific and was getting ready to head for Japan when the A-Bomb was dropped. He survived Pelilu so I am really glad he didn't have to take on the beach landings on Japan - from what I've heard that could have been a Pacific version of the Normandy invasion! faye ---- Betty <bbffrrpp@comcast.net> wrote: > Hi again, > > When I went to find a brief history of Ayer, MA, I found something on the > bottom of this page which might interest someone.
