The LDS site is down at the moment, and I was unable to find anything else here on Ancestry. Do you know of any other relatives that came to the US? Unfortunately, they weren't here very long before returning back to Ireland. I didn't realize how common the surname Long is either. Perhaps other members here would have better luck. I'm afraid I just can't find anything for certain on this family for you. I will keep looking and report to you back here should I come across anything. David J Long was from a family of 7 born to James Long & Elizabeth Sullivan (sometimes O Sullivan) Siblings were James b. 1863, Andrew b. 1861,Mary b.1865, John b. 1867, Elizabeth b 1870, David b. 1873, Johanna b. 1874 On the 1911 census Ireland it gives, David J 38, jeweller, born cork city irl, Mary 38 b. cork city irl, James 10 born Brooklyn USA, Thomas J 8 born Brooklyn USA. States they are married 11 years, 3 children born, 2 living. The marriages you found have the same parents names as David had but they dont tie in with any names of his siblings. I really dont know where to go from here , would it be possible that the christian name was mistranscribed, but it is vastly different. With that said, if you know of any Boston connections with the Murphy relative, that might help. However, and I'm sure you're aware, Murphy is such a common name. Unfortunately, I've not been able to find a marriage for David and Mary. I wasn't able to locate the birth of the children either. I checked all over the USA. I did see a marriage for a Thomas Long, with the same parents as David in 1901. I don't know if this is coincidence or if David did have a brother Thomas here in the USA that married? groom's name: Thomas F Long bride's name: Margaret Sweeney Whitehouse marriage date: 21 Apr 1901 marriage place: Manhattan, New York, New York groom's father's name: James Long groom's mother's name: Elizabeth Sullivan bride's father's name: Rodger Sweeney bride's mother's name: Ellen Sullivan Here is this marriage record for a Peter Long (parents names same as David, but "O'Sullivan" for mother's surname): groom's name: Peter Long bride's name: Margaret Flynn marriage date: 01 Sep 1901 marriage place: Manhattan, New York, New York groom's father's name: James Long groom's mother's name: Eliz. O'Sullivan bride's father's name: Timothy Flynn bride's mother's name: Mary Colter I'm not sure what to make of them not appearing under the census. They may have left and in route to another residence at the time the census was taken. That's just a guess, of course. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I hadnt realised about the Brookline thought it was meant to be Brooklyn. I do not know anything about the Murphy in Brookline but I figure out David probably went to USA on his own and maybe met Mary there. David Long parents were JAMES LONG & ELIZABETH SULLIVAN. I am assuming they married in USA even though they returned to Cork in 1908 from Philadelphia with the 2 sons. It seems unusal do you think that David Long doesnt appear on 1900 census!! (Brooklyn would be in New York) The passenger record does say Brookline, Mass. I thought the relative he came to was WR Murphy. Do you know who the relative Murphy was? Was it a relation to Mary or David? You state you're looking for a marriage for James and Mary, I'm assuming that was an error and you meant David and Mary? I've not been able to locate a marriage for them, perhaps someone else will have better luck at locating that. I wasn't able to locate the birth of the children either. I cannot locate them on census records. I did notice that there is a David Long that married in Cork in 1908, however, I cannot view who the spouse is. Do you happen to know David's parents names? Do you know if they stayed with the Murphy relative long, or moved out of state soon after arriving? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. What I know is he arrived in USA in 1898 born 1873 in CORK Ireland. He was destined for Brookline Mass (is this a mispelling of Brooklyn) to a relation A R Murphy. I suspect he married there to a Mary Mintern & 2 sons were born in Brooklyn James Long c. 1901 & Thomas J c 1902/1903. I am hoping to locate a MARRIAGE for James & Mary, a 1900 Census & births of his two sons. They returned to Ireland in 1908 from Philadelphia. Any information would be great. 2. Thanks for that reminder that Ireland was English until 1926. I can't imagine what all that meant to those who were not in Ireland once home rule came to be... I regret I didn't talk with my mom about it... her grandparents were immigrants and now that I have learned more about what happened I understand why it's was our Irish heritage that was more emphasized than the others in our tree. 1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] When "Ether" was first used !
    2. Ms Betty Fredericks
    3. Hello,   In this morning's  MassMoments  e-mail there is a story about when "ether" was first used in an operating room.    It was at MGH in Oct. 1846.          http://www.massmoments.org/moment.cfm?mid=299   I don't even want to think about all the .surgeries. in the 1600's to 1800's where "ether" was not available.   And, I don't even want to think about going to a dentist where Novocaine is not used.    When my parents could finally afford to send their children to a dentist, probably after 1950, I'm pretty sure even the first (old) dentist used Novocaine.     But, in the 1950's in Cambridge, my husband, as a teen, he had dental work - with no Novocaine or Ether, or anything.     :o(   Betty                 (near Lowell, MA)
