Smith you were talking about. They lived in Charlestown, Middlesex co. MA. The list was Albert Smith 38, Lydia A. Smith 32, Frank A. Smith 3, and Lydia Tapley 72. All were born in MA. Author: skvesta Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.massachusetts.unknown/6724.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I tried contacting the Medfield State Hospital for my ancestor's records and here was their reply... Dear Ms._______ Please know that your email inquiry regarding records of the Department of Mental Health [DMH] has been referred to me for reply. It is not unusual for family members to inquire about the medical history of relatives they believe were within the DMH hospital system. Given the content of your letter, it is particularly understandable in your case, and I am sensitive to this. Unfortunately, due to privacy law constraints imposed upon DMH by federal and state laws and regulations, including but not limited to so-called HIPAA laws, DMH can only release Protected Health Information [PHI] regarding its clients under very limited circumstances. DMH cannot even confirm whether an individual ever received DMH services unless those circumstances are satisfied. For a deceased client or patient, DMH may only release records pursuant to a valid Court Order or upon written authorization from the client's Executor or Administrator of the client's estate. This is true even for very old records. Also, even if there was a Court Order or Probate Court authorization available, it is possible that any records from 1991 and prior (if they even existed in the first place) may have been lawfully destroyed. State regulations permit the destruction of impatient records older than twenty (20) years old. Accordingly, we are unable to provide the information you requested. Although you may seek court authority, by Court Order or Probate appointment, to request those records, it is possible that such records did not exist or were lawfully destroyed. DMH is not permitted to advise you in advance of a Court Order or Probate appointment whether any records can be located. Although as a family member this may not be the news you wanted to hear; I hope you understand that privacy laws serve to allow all of our clients and patients to freely communicate with their mental health clinicians without fear that their sensitive records might be viewed at any time, even after their death, and even by concerned family members. I am sorry I cannot be more responsive, other than to offer my assistance in the event you obtain a Court Order or Probate appointment. I am available should you have any further questions or concerns as well. I know exactly where Dunstable is. Unfortunately, I'm not able to locate the Henry family in Dunstable, Litchfield, Tyngsborough, Pepperell or other surrounding towns today, or under the former names of Dunstable that you mentioned. To the original poster: I would suggest that you contact the historical society to see if you can find any information on how to locate information on the Henry family, and Litchfield, MA. With the information Flomag provided, I believe calling the Tyngsborough-Dunstable Historical Society would be best: http://www.dunstable-ma.gov/Pages/DunstableMA_WebDocs/localdocs/7 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Try looking for a Lydia Smith in the census to see if that might be a possibility. The name Lydia is reasonably different that you might be able to find her a little easier. And then of course, it may not have anything to do with your Albert Smith at all. Charlestown and Cambridge share a border, so it is worth looking into anyway. I looked through birth records and it appears they had a son who was named Albert as well, but it looks like he may have died in 1845 at 5 months old. They then have listed a birth in 1848 of an Albert T Smith to Lydia and Albert Smith. I don't see a John C. Smith connected to them. The closest John C Smith I see is born in 1846 in Roxbury MA to a Peter and Maryann Smith. SO, I guess where I'm going with this is that the name John Smith is pretty common. Work your way back to the last census where you definetly find him and let's see where that gets you. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I can't seem to find any information on your family. I cannot find there being a "Lintchfield" in MA either. Maybe it existed at one time, I don't know. "Litchfield" sounds like it would be a town name before "Lintchfield." There's a Litchfield, MN. Is this information your reading handwritten? If so, could you take a second look at the handwriting to see if it might be read as another place name and/or state? Sorry I can't help you with this. I got Alberts name as the father of John C. (b. 1848) from the Machias town clerk. I'd like to add that John C.,1848, had possibly more siblings than just two brothers. I've gone over the whole US Census for MA for the years 1850,1860 and some 1870 and haven't had much luck. However, I do think I spotted a two year old boy listed as John C. Smith in the 1850 US Census in Cambridge MA, which is right by Boston. As I remember it doesn't always come up on my computer and the fathers name was not Albert.I'll try to bring it up again. Going to sister Mrs Long @ 63 Diamond St, Brooklyn NY No 1 is interesting as the year 1898 I dont think David Long & Mary would have married this year as he emigrated in 1898. Strangely both David & Mary were baptised in the same church in Ireland so it seems they may have known each others families prior to emigration. No marriage record in ireland for them. Did see some birth records 1. James Long 23 Jan 1900 NY James Long 31/12/1901 NY. Thomas Long 3rd March 1902 NY. Unfortunately this is all the record gives on Ancestry - do you have any source to check further. David & Marys 2 sons James called after davids father & Thomas after Marys father. It is possible that Mary Mintern (diff variations of name spelling) minturn, in Flushing in 1898 would not have been married I think at this stage. Would there be any directory for this time? How do you know that John's father's name is Albert? I looked through birth records for Boston for 1848 and I don't see a birth for a John with a father named Albert. Unfortunately in 1848 much of Boston was still separated into several smaller towns that folks also referred to as Boston. For example, Charlestown MA has been a part of Boston since 1878. So in 1848 it was still it's own town. I will do some more poking, but anything you can add in regards to those two questions would be helpful. For awhile he was a stone mason, then later a newspaper editor. Before that he was a railroad forman overseer of the masonery on the Buffalo Rochester and Pittsburg Railroad. He's listed as a stone mason in the 1880 US Census.
