I found a Boston Passenger Record Sep 1898 of James Heatherton which I believe is him. I found a Boston City directory record of James Hetherton 1906 and another in 1910. He was born Aug 18, 1887 in Knocktemple, County Cavan, Ireland. He went into the seminary before emigrating. He left the seminary and went to the US. I cannot find him in 1910 or 1920 or 1930 Census. He did not return to Ireland... One relative said he called or wired a letter home when his father died in 1905. Any avenues I can peek at it....? I have checked the Mass Civil Records Collection on ancestry. I have checked LDS. I checked the 1911 census in Ireland in case he went back.. NOPE.... The only person he mentions in it is his wife Ida. He gave everything to her. I haven't looked into deeds or probate records of him. I doubt that John had any military service. And I'm really not confident that that my John in the 1870 census in Chicago was him. I think theres not much chance of that. If we go by findagrave.com they have my John C. Smith born in West Springfield MA in 1848. The lady that posted it is a Methidost Episcapal researcher. John and Ida must have been members of the ME Church in Machias because Johns funeral was in that church. His obituary and the Machias town records says he was born in Boston. I even tried to pursue a lead with the West Springfield info but haven't been able to match him up with any Albert Smith in the 1850 and 1860 census. By the way, I wrote to the lady who put my John on findagrave but she never wrote back. It took me months and years to finally get them all sorted out. And Smith wasn't all that common in Southern Indiana back when my Smith's were living there in the 1850-1880 time frame. But trying to locate Smith's in Chicago and Boston in those time frames is pretty daunting. When your John died was there a will or probate for him in NY? That may help shed some light on his background as well. Also military service could help too? He was pretty much too young for the civil war, but perhaps after that? The reason I ask all of this is because it seems like it might be possible that the informant on the death certificate may have put the wrong name for his father. I have seen before where the informant will give their fathers name instead of the deceased. There are of course other possibilities, such as the family was not enumerated in 1850 or 1860 or his father went by a different first name officially or used his middle name... there are many possibilities. It does seem unlikely to me that John C Smith's birth would not be recorded and then we wouldn't be able to locate him in two different census' 10 years apart. But it is a possibility. Just for the sake of playing devils advocate, you seem pretty confident that John arrived in Machias NY in 1874 from Chicago. How do you know this? Why would they go from Boston to Chicago to Machias, NY? Sometimes tossing these sort of questions may help uncover other information. One more: Does John have any siblings with him in Machias. I know you mentioned possibles in your early posts, but anyone more definite? Robert Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Smith, John Smith and Albert Smith but I haven't had any luck. None of the Albert Smiths I looked at had a John C. or John Smith. I have a kind of older theory that the John Smith I found (years ago) in the 1860 US Census at Ward 11 Boston, Suffolk co., might be my John C. Smith. Everything seems to fit except the head of household is a John Smith 35 and it lists his place of birth as Scotland. My mother said our family had Scotch blood. That must have been the Smiths. The senior John was a bricklayer by trade and could still have the name of Albert. And my John C. was a stone mason. The mother was Margaret Smith 37, b. Scotland. The children were John 12, Mary 10, James 6, Daniel 5,Charles H. 3, and the 10 month old baby, Robert, who was born in Canada. All the children were born in MA except Robert. The family moved to Chicago were in 1870 John 1848 was working as a carpenter! . He went to Machias in 1874. I could be wrong but thats my old theory.
