I saw Maine, County Probate Records, 1760-1979 (Browse only) These records are not indexed -- one has to "browse" through them like one would browse through a book. I thought there might be a settlement of the estate of Howard Byron Sederquist. Withing this collection, I went to Cumberland County (where Portsmouth is located), Probate record index 1908-1923, and paged forward to about where I thought the "S's" might start. Then, scanning down the "Se" section, I was shocked to see "# 7284,Sederquist, Howard A, Falmouth, Adoption, September 20, 1915." So then I went to Family Search collection Maine County Probate Records... Dockets 1915-1916 vol 7 no 7001-8000 until I found #7284. Amazing. Then I looked for a Reed living in Falmouth around that time, and found Oscar in the City Directories. Then I checked Ancestry's Maine Marriages 1892-1996 for a marriage of anyone named Sederquist and found Groom's Name: Reed Oscar M Groom's Residence: Falmouth, ME Bride's Name: Sederquist Mary E Bride's Residence: Lynn, MA Marriage Date: 23 Jun 1903 I think the court records may hold the key to solving this mystery. More research needed. MR Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The adoption of Howard A. Sederquisted is listed in the Cumberland County, Maine Probate Record Index 1908-1923, image 244 on Familysearch https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1951-32701-2478-32?cc=2040534&wc=MM1F-H4D:19850934 Residence Falmouth, Adoption Sept. 20, 1915. When you go to that dockent number, 7284 in Cumberland County, Main, Probate records, Dockets 1915-1916 vol 7 no 7001-8000, you find the following: Howard Austin Sederquist, now Howard Austin Reed. Residence Falmouth September 20, 1915, Petition for Adoption and change of name granted. Name changed to Howard Austin Reed. Certificate issued. Recorded, Vol. 49 p 188. I believe your father was adopted by Oscar Reed and his wife Mary (Sederquist) Reed. She is, I believe, the Mary E. Sederquist, daughter of John Harvey Sederquist on your tree. (Need to verify marriage record) Oscar and Mary were married in Maine on 23 Jun 1903 http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&rank=0&f4=&sx=&f1=sederquist&f9=&f8=&rg_f7__date=&rs_f7__date=0&gskw=&prox=1&db=mainemarriagestate&ti=0&ti.si=0&gss=angs-d&pcat=34&fh=0&h=457156&recoff=25 Perhaps the court records listed may provide further details as to the reason for or nature of the adoption. I hope you can get those newspaper articles offered to you by Irish 716. Good work, Irish! The articles I think are being referenced describe Josephine Sederquist's leading role in a 1922 strike by the Textile Workers' Union of Manchester, NH. I am wondering about your father's date of birth There is an entry on NewEnglandAncestors.org as follows Name: Howard Augustin SEDERQUIST Date Aug 13, 1914 Location: Manchester, New Hampshire, United States Record Type: Baptism Church: St. Augustine I would strongly recommend that you write to the church to try to obtain a copy of that baptismal record for two reasons. First, was your father really born 5 Jul 1912, as indicated on the SS death index, or was he really born in 1914? Is there an error on the above entry? (possible). You should probably ask the church secretary to check both years. Second, does the record say anything about either of the child's parents being absent or deceased, or any other clues? St Anne - St Augustin Parish 383 Beech Street Manchester, NH 03103 Phone: (603) 623-8809 Fax: (603) 626-1517 Howard Sederquist is listed in the City Directories of Manchester, NH for the years 1914 and 1915 as follows: 1914 http://search.ancestry.com/Browse/view.aspx?dbid=8775&path=Manchester.1914.S.16&sid=&gskw= 1915 http://search.ancestry.com/Browse/view.aspx?dbid=8775&path=Manchester.1915.S.9&sid=&gskw= Keep in mind that the information for the city directory is collected during the prior year. So the 1915 Manchester City Directory has a copyright of 1914. The data is usually collected during the summer-fall of the year. Did you notice that the stillborn birth record I referenced states that the infant was born alive? If so, surely he was not conceived on or after Howard's marriage to Annie Pellerin in Sep 1914. Of course, this record doesn't state the length of gestation. Perhaps Annie was already pregnant when they were married. Perhaps it was a "marriage of convenience" and Howard was still actually married to Josephine???? Surely, if Howard Byron Sederquist, a resident of Manchester, died between 1914 and 1919, you would think that there would be something in the Manchester newspaper about it. I don't find a death record for him. I see that Harvey Sederquist joined the army during WWI Name: Harvey D. I suggest you try to obtain a copy of her death certificate. Even better would be a copy of her original application for a social security card, which usually lists the correct birth date and the names of the parents. You can obtain a copy from the Social Security Administration http://www.ssa.gov/foia/html/foia_guide.htm This way, you can find out for sure if this Josephine S.
