It was upriver from Springfield which began as a trading post on the Connecticut River. There are still people of Native descent in the area. They never left completely. I know of Abenaki people who traveled back and forth from Quebec to the area. I would check the border crossing records. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I know all about my grandmother's married life and later years, but her early years are a near blank. Apparently, the 'elders' didn't volunteer too much information about their past. I checked the links you provided, but they did not produce any records. I am beginning to think that she may have lived in Lowell (though my aunt claimed that my GM said she was 'born and raised' in Lowell), however she may in reality have been born elsewhere. Her name was, indeed, Monica. The problem is the exact spelling of her last name, which at this point, we simply don't know. It was my mistake in previously listing her on the 1910 census. Actually, she is listed in 1920 census and thereafter as Monica Barry - her married name (New York). Her sister, Anna - married name Fernandez - lived in Bayonne NJ (yes, Candido was her husband). and I have located her census reports also. They had a brother, Joseph, but again, without a last name & DOB, it's a dead trail. On the censuses for Monica, she lists her birthplace as Mass., and Anna lists hers as NJ. Regarding Antoni and Josephine, that's absolutely all I know; that the spelling of their last name at immigration could have so many phonetic variations. Depending on Monica's censuses, the parents are listed as being born in either Germany or Lithuania, which doesn't help. I have no idea when they came to the US, or how. I am grateful for any assistance. Thanks, Mary Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hello, I was just looking for the informative web site about the history of State Hospitals in MA. It has an unusual web site name, something like www. 8522 ... com and I haven't found it, yet. But, in the search I came across this book mentioned: http://www.worldcat.org/title/admissions-card-files-for-state-institutions-1910-1950/oclc/180703139 Just a reminder that at http://www.worldcat.org/ you can try to find a special book in .any. library. Here's another related book: http://www.worldcat.org/title/weekly-returns-of-admissions-and-discharges-at-the-state-infirmary-1894-1935/oclc/83716135 That reminds me of all the postings from 6-8 yrs. ago where a researcher went through all the records for the Tewksbury State Hospital, looking for people with connections to Nova Scotia. She posted them on the Nova Scotia List. I searched on-line for "State Hospitals, Massachusetts" and didn't find the site I was looking for. OH, I changed the search term to "MA State Hospitals," and found an old posting of mine which mentioned it: http://www.1856.org/ (The man I .hope. is an ancestor, John DEXTER, went to the Tewksbury State Hospital in 1904 and died there in 1905. He was born and lived most of his life in Killingly, CT. During the 1880's he and his wife moved up to Melrose, MA, and shortly after in 1892, as an older couple, adopted a toddler. John and Mary (CLARK) DEXTER left a married daughter in Killingly, and I believe that Mrs. Clara (DEXTER) YOUNG had a pregnancy outside of her marriage in 1888. So, the toddler being adopted (my grandmother) was very probably John and Mary's granddaughter.) (long story I've told on the Lists for 10 yrs.) Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA)
Re: State Hospital Records My great grandfather also died in Medfield State Hospital...I had to write to a judge of probate records in that county and send proof on my relation and they granted me his records...Of course that was a week before the HIPPA law went into effect so not sure now if they would grant it...But it was great big big file even with two photos. He is buried on the property there... Sent from my iPod On Jan 25, 2013, at 3:01 AM, genmassachusetts-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. Had I listened to my family stories, my gggrandmother lived to be 102 and was buried in Lowell. I found her buried in West Springfield, having died in her early 80's. Things to consider: - maybe her birth name isn't really Monica. That of course really causes challenges since her last name could be spelled any number of ways. - you indicated that you had located her in 1910. I have not. Where was she, and what was her name at the time? If she was married, it would have been at quite a young age. - since Anna appears to have been born in NJ ca 1901, and you know the names of the parents, maybe finding more about Anna (is her husband Candido?) or the parents is a better proposition than finding Monica. (Easy for me to say; I haven't succeeded yet, but I'm guessing you know a little bit more than you've already listed. :) - What else do you know about the parents Antoni and Josephine? When I enter 'exact' info, such as dob, it returns zero records. It would be great if I could do a search for ALL of Massachusetts with only the dob of 12/25/1896 and no other data. I believe she married in New York, but I have no data on what year. She died on Staten Island NY November, 1977. I see her on censuses from 1910 onward, but it has her married name only and age, not DOB. She died in 1977, and left no paper records. She only orally told the family when and where she was born (Lowell, MA 12/25/1896). She lived most of her life on Staten Island, NY, but I don't know when she arrived there or when/where she married. I searched thousands of records from Lowell, but came up empty. Without knowing the true, correct spelling of her maiden name and the real town she was born in, I am at a standstill. Her husband and children are deceased. I am going to try to get a record from Social Security - because she HAD TO have provided SOMETHING to prove who she was in order to collect benefits, right? Hello, In this morning's, "MassMoments" e-mail there is a story about the beginning of the Civil War that I don't remember reading before: ...in 1861, the Sixth Massachusetts Volunteer Militia was formally organized. With war approaching, men who worked in the textile cities of Lowell and Lawrence joined this new infantry regiment. They were issued uniforms and rifles; they learned to drill. They waited for the call. It came on April 15th, three days after the attack on Fort Sumter. They were needed to defend Washington, D.C.. The mood when they left Boston was almost festive. When they arrived in the border state of Maryland three days later, everything changed. An angry mob awaited them. In the riot that followed, 16 people lost their lives. Four were soldiers from Massachusetts. These men were the first combat fatalities of the Civil War. http://www.massmoments.org/moment.cfm?mid=26 One question this morning would be: How did the mills in both cities carry on without many of their employees? Reminder that the "Town" of Lowell was originally annexed off of the Town of Chelmsford to create a "mill town" and different kinds of buildings were built to make that town (1820's).
