From my research, i haven't turned up anything about a native Amnerican boarding school in Springfield, mass. I've been trying to see if i can find anything. it was one of the schools that unfortunately indoctrinated native Americans with "american" culture, taught them english, cut their hair, and converted them to Christianity, all while destroying their native culture. Very sad, indeed. i just haven't found any proof of a school. Family lore tends to have more myth to it than fact, i recently found out another ancestor of mine may not have been indian either, which both my grandfather and father would refute. It may well be true that he was half native american, but I haven't found a lot of census' with francois listed. I found this on the 1850 census in New York, the 1860 census in Ohio, and the 1870 census in Massachusetts. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have a feeling he may have identified as white to remove any social stigma that may have existed at that time because he was mixed...either that or I don't have any native American heritage. Do you know if there was a Native American Boarding school in Springfield, Mass? That's what I have always been told. The fact he lived in Springfield at one time seems to coincide with that. If there was never any such school for Native Americans in Massachusetts, i can deduce he was probably of French canadian ancestry. It's really quite common for families that have moved about. It's not as if people needed birth certificates or carried driver's licenses. Just wasn't an important element of life at the time. I can't address the heritage aspects. i did notice that the census records recorded him as white, which doesn't conclude anything, but is a data point. Good luck! There have always been Mohawks in the St. Lawrence Valley in the post-contact era. There's one reservation in New York and at least two more in Quebec. There was also another group called the Algonkins and another the Montagnais. I may be spelling it wrong. You can go here for reliable histories: http://www.tolatsga.org/Compacts.html What tribe ancestors were very much depends on what time period it was and what tribes were living there at the time. For instance, Ohio was the homeland of the Erie Indians. The Mohawks wiped out them out in the Beaver Wars. Later the Delawares, Shawnees, Miamis and Senecas moved into their land in an effort to escape the westward expansion of the Europeans. I live in North Carolina, so traveling to Massachusetts is a bit out of the question, hence i can only really rely on what i have available. I will definitely not rule out abenaki or maybe huron heritage.( the hurons were major allies of the french canadians and were mortal enemies of the Iriquois. They even invaded the hurons and attacked quebec many times during the first years of settlement. I have so little info about Francois nothing is out of the question. Author: dldove22 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.massachusetts.unknown/7569.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Rootsweb completely ate my first reply to you ): You're right to surmise that the Native ancestry may have more to do with the original people of the area, instead of the Cherokee. As what happened in my family, yours may have misremembered what the tribe was, probably due to time, substituting the name of a more easily remembered tribe. There are still descendants of the original people in all the places you named. Because there's a mention of Canada, I would check the border crossings between the U.S. and Canada, since it seems your ancestors seemed to move around, another Native trait. You may find that someone came from or visited Native communities in Canada. A friend found her Abenaki ancestors that way. I don't know where you live, but they're available in Springfield at the library of the Connecticut Valley Historical Society. I've seen that you can access them through Ancestry and many public libraries have an account. The Abenakis lived in New York as well as Vermont and New Hampshire, and Springfield, which sounds like your family. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Do you think this was because he was half Native American and he wanted to escape any prejudice during this time period?I still haven't found any evidence of a springfield, mass indian school, although it is interesting that he lived in springfield in 1910...which again adds proof to the family lore. I also find it interesting his mother was born in NY, not north carolina or the southern mountains where the cherokee are located. Could he be iroquois instead of cherokee? I'm searching for some information on Francois Larocque. I don't know his birth or death date, or who he married, but he had a daughter, Angelina Larocque, who married Arthur Descouteaux. Family lore has it that he was half Cherokee Indian (his father was french canadian)and attended a Native American boarding school in Springfield Mass. First off, was there a Native American boarding School in Springfield, mass? i haven't found any evidence of one, although in his pictures he looks very Native American, which seems to verify the theory. It is doubtful he was born in massachusetts, but it could still be a possibility. i haven't found him listed on any cherokee documents, either. Can anyone help?
