    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] History, Genealogy in "The Lowell Sun"
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, I've mentioned before that this year "The Lowell Sun" started printing a few more articles about history and genealogy. They didn't do this so much in the past. There was another one yesterday. While at the site, I thought I would also mention the other articles which have appeared in the newspaper recently: http://www.lowellsun.com/ci_11145717?IADID=Search-www.lowellsun.com-www.lowellsun.com http://www.lowellsun.com/ci_11069473?IADID=Search-www.lowellsun.com-www.lowellsun.com http://www.lowellsun.com/ci_11061803?IADID=Search-www.lowellsun.com-www.lowellsun.com http://www.lowellsun.com/ci_10954603?IADID=Search-www.lowellsun.com-www.lowellsun.com http://www.lowellsun.com/ci_11056567?IADID=Search-www.lowellsun.com-www.lowellsun.com http://www.lowellsun.com/ci_11004247?IADID=Search-www.lowellsun.com-www.lowellsun.com http://www.lowellsun.com/ci_11111683?IADID=Search-www.lowellsun.com-www.lowellsun.com Just an FYI for you. Betty (near Lowell, MA) Also, There was another article about "Middlesex Community College" and their plans to use the long-abandoned, large, former Train Station in Downtown Lowell for offices and classrooms, etc. But, I can't find the article in a search this morning. It was revitalized several years ago, and still stood abandoned. Oh, I just did a Google search and found a page offering photos of Lowell. Near the bottom of the page is a photo of the so-called "B&M building." http://home.comcast.net/~corey.sciuto/lowell9.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston_and_Lowell_Railroad http://www.thebluecomet.com/bm.html

    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] David GOODHUE of Dracut, Lowell, MA
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, In yesterday's "The Lowell Sun" (MA), there is an article, entitled "Where is Lowell Civil War hero buried?" http://www.lowellsun.com/ci_11145717?IADID=Search-www.lowellsun.com-www.lowellsun.com www.lowellsun.com The subheading is: Quest of two local history buffs may never unearth the answer. The article starts out: More than 130 years fater David H. Goodhue's death, two men set out to find this Civil War soldier from Lowell. ......"The Sun" arranged to have them compare stories over the phone. Each has evidence that Union Pvt. Goodhue, a prisoner of war when he died on June 30, 1863, is buried in one of these far-off Southern places. .... Under one of the pictures on another page, it says: A mass trench of graves near a former Confederate prison camp in Salisbury, N.C., where some evidence suggests David H. Goodhue may be buried. Just an FYI for you. Betty (near Lowell, MA)

    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] McDOUGALL-DOYLE - Cape Breton Island to Boston - circa 1920's
    2. mary barrow
    3. I am hoping that someone here may help me with a HUGE brick wall. My paternal grandfather was CHARLES ARCHIBALD MCDOUGALL born: 27 Apr 1890, North Sydney, Cape Breton Island Grandma's official 'story' was that he had been "lost at sea"; more likely is that he headed to the Boston area (sometime after 1916). I'd really like to find out what became of him, no matter what. His parents emigrated to Boston in 1927, and 6 of his 12 siblings emigrated between the mid 1910s and mid 1920's. If anyone has information about ANY of these folks, I will be beyond grateful. Brother James Alexander McDOUGALL (born: 1887) emigrated in 1913, and was living in Cambridge in 1917 with a wife and one child. Two sisters married two brothers and emigrated in the early 1920's Carma Rita Regis McDOUGALL - born: 1899, died: 1978, Dorchester Husband: George Wilson DOYLE - born: 1886, died: Sep 1974, Dorchester Children of Carma and George: George A DOYLE - born: Abt 1920, Canada, died: ?? 1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] 3 HANNAH Brothers in 1930
    2. Betty
    3. Hi again, I'd like to mention that my ancestors' family were: William and Eliza (RITCHIE) HANNAH, who both died in the 1890's in Everett. (Buried in Malden) Daughter, Mary Ann, born Scotland, died as toddler ~1858. (Either on ship, on arrival, or in Billerica where they first lived in 1860.) Daughter, Elizabeth Barbara, born Scotland, married in MA to William KERR, and they lived in Everett and Malden, etc. Elizabeth died in Somerville in 1937. William died in Everett in 1905. Son, William, born in MA ~1858, married Annie, and they lived later in Harvard, MA. Son, John, born in MA ~1860, married Annie, and lived in Malden and Everett, I believe. Daughter, Isabella, born in MA ~1863, died in 1882 at Age 20. Son, George, born in MA ~1870?, never married. He lived in the Somerville area, and might have died at the "Old Soldiers Home" in Chelsea. (I haven't checked the "WW I draft records" for the sons, yet.) The only members of the family who would have been alive in 1930 were the mother, Mrs. Elizabeth KERR, and her 3 sons. (I'll have to find out when George died.) This is information I can find on the 3 sons: HANNAH, JOHN (1920 U.S. Census) MASSACHUSETTS , MIDDLESEX, 4-WD EVERETT Age: 59, Male, Race: WHITE, Born: MA Series: T625 Roll: 710 Page: 64 HANNA, GEORGE A (1920 U.S. Census) MASSACHUSETTS , MIDDLESEX, 1-WD SOMERVILLE Age: 48, Male, Race: WHITE, Born: MA Series: T625 Roll: 717 Page: 1 (a boarder in someone's home, possibly a boarding house) HANNAH, WILLIAM (1920 U.S. Census) MASSACHUSETTS , WORCESTER, HARVARD Age: 60, Male, Race: WHITE, Born: MA Series: T625 Roll: 746 Page: 109 (NOTE BOTH SPELLINGS ARE SHOWED IN RECORDS - HANNAH, HANNA) In 1920, the mother, Mrs. KERR, was living in Medford. She had her oldest daughter (unmarried), and her youngest daughter living with her. This is where they were living when her youngest son - met "the girl next door." (the grandmother I've written about). (They married on Christmas Eve, 1911.) KERR, ELIZABETH (1920 U.S. Census) MASSACHUSETTS , MIDDLESEX, 3-WD MEDFORD Age: 62, Female, Race: WHITE, Born: SCOT Series: T625 Roll: 714 Page: 124 At some point, Mrs. KERR moved to Somerville, as that is where she died. Or, she could have died in Somerville Hospital. Her unmarried daughter, Louise KERR, last lived in Lexington, and lived a very long life. Her youngest daughter became Mrs. Ruby PHELPS, and she last lived in Lexington, and also lived a very long life. Perhaps finding Louise KERR in 1930 would show where she and her mother lived at that time. Thank you for whatever information you can find. Betty (near Lowell, MA) (I believe there is information on the families and wives of William and John in the archives of the Lists, from past years.) FYI: While I'm at it, I just checked some of the "draft records" and I think I found George A. HANNA signing up in Middlesex Co., but I can't look at that record. (I'm not finding John and William in the Index. I don't know if they had middle names. Both born ~1860 MA.) http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rwguide/WWIdraft.html (I need to get to Somerville City Hall to look for "death records" for Mrs. KERR, and for her husband's sister, Mrs. Mary McINNES.)

    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] NEHGS MVR 1841-1910 database: Issue with querying for Nantucket
    2. Sue Richart
    3. Greetings Listers, I've reported the problem to the webmaster, but wanted you to be aware of it. If you do a query for Nantucket County on the NEHGS's Massachusetts Vital Records 1841-1910 on-line database (www.newenglandancestors.org) and want to go on to either querying for All counties or another county, you need to be aware of a problem. If you try to change the county to another, you will only get Nantucket on the drop-down list. You then have to go over to the town field and change Nantucket to All, and you can continue on with what you are doing. If you choose to use the Clear button, you still have to go over to the town field and change Nantucket to All, and you can proceed to querying for something else. Best of luck in your search. 1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] HANNAH Family in MA 1860 to 1930
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, I was able to visit the Bell Rock Cemetery in Malden this week, and saw the HANNAH and KERR gravestone. This has gotten me started on trying (again) to find out more about William and Eliza HANNAH's family in MA from their arrival in 1857 (from Glasgow). I need to get away from the computer this morning, so I'll just mention briefly the names of their children. And, I'd like to ask if anyone is researching them: William HANNAH / HANNA, b1828 in Ireland (parents from Scotland; he married in Scotland) Eliza (RITCHIE), b1837 in Ireland (parents from Scotland) Mary Ann HANNAH, b1856 Scotland (poss. died on trip) Elizabeth B. HANNAH, b1857, arr. Age 3 mos. William HANNAH, b1859 MA John HANNAH, b1860 MA Isabella HANNAH, b1863 MA (d.1882) George HANNAH, b1871 (never married) Elizabeth married William KERR, and they were my great-grandparents. William married and lived in Harvard, MA, with family. John married and lived in Malden. I have found "some" information by looking at the census for 1860 to 1920. The extended families mostly stayed in the Malden and Everett area. I do not have access to the 1930 census. (This family and the related KERR family seem to have the men working in "the Chemical Works.") Off to visit the grandchildren ... Betty (near Lowell, MA) (More information on the couples is in the archives of the Lists.) (I just found out that the parents of William HANNAH lived in Bromhome Parish, Co. Donegal, Ireland, when they had him.) FYI: The parents from marriage record, etc., back in Co. Donegal (but born Scotland) were: William HANNAH and Mary Ann DOE ?? Andrew RITCHIE and Isabella YEATES ???

    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] NEHGS MVR 1841-1910 database: Whited, Whitehead, and Snow
    2. Sue Richart
    3. Greetings, The digitizing software for the NEHGS MVR 1841-1910 was working overtime when it got to the surnames Whited and Whitehead. If you couldn't find them, please try again. Whitchesa Ann H. Boston 1851 59 84 Death surname Whitehead Whitchesa Catharine Phillipston 1855 95 146 Death surname Whitehead Whitchesa George Boston 1855 95 83 Death surname Whitehead Whitchesa George South Reading 1855 94 107 Death surname Whitehead Whitchesa Hsnry A. Taunton 1854 84 96 Death surname Whitehead FN Henry Whitchesa John Chicopee 1855 93 218 Death surname Whitehead Whitchesa John C. Stockbridge 1855 93 50 Death surname Whitehead Whitchesa Ltartha Chicopee 1855 93 220 Death surname Whitehead FN Martha Whitchesa Ralph Webster 1851 59 199 Death surname Whitehead Whitchesa Sophia Fall River 1851 66 69 Death surname Whitehead year 1852 Waited Isaac Great Barrington 1855 93 28 Death surname Whited Waited Janes A. Great Barrington 1855 93 29 Death surname Whited FN James As to the surname Snow, there appears to be one or two index pages for the Snow surname missing from 1851-55 death records. The first page with Snow entries stops at a Male Snow and the next page begins with Sarah. Sam is pretty good about getting these corrected, so if you are looking for Snow entries for this time frame, check the database in a week or so. There is also a scanning error amongst the male and female Snows, but I won't try and fix them until the other Snow entries come on line. Please remember, this also means the Massachusetts Archives database, http://www.sec.state.ma.us/vitalrecordssearch, is missing the same entries and has the Whitchesa surname in place of Whitehead. If you are helping someone who does not have a subscription to the NEHGS database, remember they may be asking for help based on the mis-scanned entries. Sue Richart NEHGS Volunteer

    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] NEHGS Wrong Image help requested
    2. Sue Richart
    3. Greetings listers: As some of you know, Sam Sturgis, one of the NEHGS webmasters, has received an auto-frame system that digitizes microfilm. Using the FHL microfilms, he has done quite a few of the 1910 missing death images and we are working on 1852 missing images. Also, as I go through a spreadsheet of a volume fixing the entries, he is digitizing the appropriate pages from the FHL microfilm to obtain the missing image(s). I will be announcing those pages on GenMassachusetts and Suffolks lists and will only add another county list if there are a lot from that county. What I would like help with are the switched images? I know that there are some Boston pages that show Fall River images and some Bristol pages that show Boston images. I'm not talking about scanning errors where your entry is listed on the wrong year (post-1902 death images), volume, or page. If you are aware of some of switched image and can identify the type (birth, marriage, and death), volume, and page range that would be a great help and will speed up those getting digitized. Before you send me some you think fit this description, I ask that you do one thing. Please, take the time to clear your query and look at the page ONLY by querying for volume and page to ensure that this really is a switched image. There are literally hundreds of thousands of the scanning errors left to fix, so please don't send me those at this time. I've done several volumes and have figured out a reasonably efficient method of working through them, so I will be dealing with the scanning errors that way. Now, if it is your grandmother or great-grandparent's birth, marriage, or death, and there is a problem and you can't figure out how to get to the correct entry, by all means email me or Dale Cook or post on the forum for John Ledden to help you out. I will post the switched page information to GenMasschusetts and the appropriate county lists, so everyone is aware they have been found. I'm really excited about this. Soon all, but the pages that were missing prior to the filming by the folks from Salt Lake, will be available on the NEHGS Massachusetts Vital Records 1841-1910 on-line database. I am spending more time than I should doing this, but it feels great to be making real progress. Sincerely, Sue Richart NEHGS Volunteer repairing the MVR 1841-1910 database from Northeast Washington State
