    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Keeping "Safe Box" beside the door
    2. Betty
    3. Hi again, I might have mentioned it earlier this year, but at the time I read someplace (or heard someplace) that back in history --- people would put a "strong box" right beside the front door. This would probably not be "Martha Stewart correct," and it probably hasn't been done in centuries, but it sounds like a very good idea to me ! There are many instances (such as in the news recently), when you only have "minutes" to escape your home. And, having a "fire-proof, water-proof box" - always sitting right beside your front door - would make it easy to "save" it. And, as has been suggested, send a "copy" of your very important documents to your friend, relative, or neighbor. Just remembering that your friend, relative, or neighbor can suffer as disaster just as well as you can. And, don't forget to "save" your most important genealogy - to disk or - something transportable. As I sit here, I have another thought. Wouldn't it be nice if some company created a ... fire-proof and water-proof, two-drawer filing cabinet. Maybe on wheels. I've seen the new "safety boxes" in the stores this month, and only a few papers would fit into them. Or, maybe .. fire-proof and water-proof, 18-gal. boxes - for storing your most important "family photos." About 20 years ago I lost a few family photos because some were in a cardboard box which was sitting beside a window. Water got into the box - from moisture from the winter window. Betty (near Lowell, MA)

Author: jeanmayo1053 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.massachusetts.unknown/6876.1.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have a little more information to work with: 1. Roy Raymond McHoul was born on Mar. 27, 1913, probably in Dorchester, MA. He died on Mar. 20, 1981 in Dorchester, MA. The McHoul Funeral Home of Dorchester, MA. handled the funeral arrangements. His mother is said to have been Charlotte Webster. I don't know the name of his father as yet. His first wife was Isabella MacPhee, and his children with her were: Malcolm G., Roy W., John L., Donald J., and Elizabeth L. McHoul. His second wife was Jessie Urquhart. In 1962, Roy Raymond McHoul was living in Roxbury, MA. His sons, Malcolm G. and John L. were listed as being in the millitary in 1962. Roy W. was also listed in Roxbury, MA. in 1962. In 1981, Roy Raymond and Jessie McHoul were retired and living at 21 Winter Street in Roxbury, MA. I am looking for census records for Roy Raymond McHoul in Mass., born in 1913, mother named Charlotte ( Webster ). I am trying to find out the name of his parents and his family origins. Can Roy Raymond McHoul be found in census records in Mass. for the years 1920 and 1930? Can a woman named Charlotte be found in census records for 1900 - 1930 in Mass., married to a McHoul? Can census records be found for Roy Raymond McHoul with siblings: Roy (?), Violet, and Marion McHoul? There was a Roy McHoul in some early 1970's Boston city directories, listing his address as Brighton, near Dorchester, MA. In his obituary, Roy Raymond McHoul had siblings named: Roy McHoul(?) of Abington, Violet Cooper of Arlington, and Marion Coughlon of Malden. Can anyone help me learn the parents and family origins of Roy Raymond McHoul, born in 1913 in Mass.? Any help would be very much appreciated. Jean. 1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] NEHGS MVR 1841-1910 Tip 7: Amended Record or Not?
    2. Sue Richart
    3. Tip 7: NEHGS MVR 1841-1910 Tip 7: Amended Record or Not? For those using www.newenglandancestors.org Massachusetts Vital Records 1841-1910 on-line database, here is a tip that may make using it a bit easier. With some exceptions, amended record images are NOT available on the database. You have to request the information from either the State Archives or the appropriate town clerk. Some entries are amended both on the older record and an amended record page, so you may find those. It tends to be the smaller towns that do this. I haven't see it for Boston records. Is a record an amended record or not? It isn't easy to tell. Below are some amended records volumes and pages. Boston uses volume 8 for many of its amended records. year town vol pg 1855 Barnstable 1 105 1845 Canton 1 443 1851 Canton 1 445 1853 Canton 1 447 1842 Chelsea 1 511 1842 Chelsea 1 513 1854 Chelsea 1 515 1844 Chilmark 1 613 1846 Chilmark 1 615 1847 Chilmark 1 617 1848 Chilmark 1 621 1850 Chilmark 1 623 1855 Chilmark 1 633 1843 Concord 1 719 1846 Concord 1 721 1848 Tisbury 5 101 1849 Tisbury 5 103 1851 Tisbury 5 113 1854 Tisbury 5 129 Below are some records that looked like they would be amended records, but were not. Carroll (Female) Walpole 1855 1 253 Birth vol 91 Cleary Emery C. Lawrence 1854 1 190 Birth vol 81 Cook Charles Sewall Abington 1855 1 266 Birth vol 91 Coolidge Chas. Emerson Medway 1855 1 216 Birth vol 91 Gay Harriet E. Dedham 1855 1 199 Birth vol 91 Ilsley (Male) Lowell 1855 1 121 Birth pg 91 Jones Herbert R. Falmouth 1854 1 6 Birth vol 81 Livemore Herbert J. Cambridge 1855 1 52 Birth vol 91 How can you tell? If you see an asterisk in the Given Name field, that is an amended record, but many amended records do not have asterisks. If you took the first record above for Carroll (Female) and queried for the town of Walpole, year 1855, page 253, and type as Birth, you would see a number of Walpole birth entries for Walpole regardless of the volume number. If there are other Walpole birth entries for 1855, click on the image with the common volume number (91) and see if your entry is there. If so, please let John Ledden, Dale Cook, or I know so we can repair the entry. One change you will see in the database concerns amended records. Per the webmaster's instructions, I'm putting "Amended Record - No image available" in the field that shows above the image when I verify the index shows it as an amended record. This makes it look like there is an image, so please check above the image area, when the image does not appear. I am currently going through all volume 1 records regardless of year, so hopefully will fix the rest of the not-really-volume-1 entries fairly soon. I have completed correcting the portion that covers 1841-43 entries. Sue Richart NEHGS Volunteer

Mary Ann Jowett died before 1881 and her husband John was back in England by that year married to a woman called Hannah who was from Ireland. In the 1881 census it says that Alice Maud Mary was born in Worster, Massts, America. Maybe I am wrong presuming the Massts means Massachusetts, although I am at a loss as to where else it could mean, and America is very clearly written on the original document. In 1891 it just says she was born in America In 1901 when she is married to a Fred Boardwell it says she was born in Canada! Sorry I have no further information and we do not even know why the family may have come to the US. There is a possibility a Great Uncle George Berry (1804) woollen merchant lived in the US, he appears back in his home town of Heckmondwike West Yorkshire in 1861. He has a son George W Berry 16 yrs old who it says was born 1845 in America, but it does not say where in America. This family do not appear in any other UK census records so they may only have been back in the UK for a short time. I am not usually this vague as I conduct my investigations carefully, but sections of these 2 families have escaped me, it appears to America! All the best and thanks for trying to help Liz Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. NEHGS MVR 1841-1910 Tip 6: Boston pre-1850 For those using www.newenglandancestors.org Massachusetts Vital Records 1841-1910 on-line database, here is a tip that may make using it a bit easier. The City of Boston did not start submitting birth registers to the Vital Records office until 1848-49. There are only 7 Boston births entries listed before 1848. Chelsea did submit their records fairly early on, so those are available. Sue Richart NEHGS Volunteer

    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] NEHGS MVR 1841-1910 Tip 5: Town trouble
    2. Sue Richart
    3. NEHGS MVR 1841-1910 Tip 5: Town trouble For those using www.newenglandancestors.org Massachusetts Vital Records 1841-1910 on-line database, here is a tip that may make using it a bit easier. Here is a sample of some recent corrections. Chapin Elias P. Springfield 1854 78 321 Marriage MI F. Chapin Sidney M. Upton 1852 60 247 Marriage town Chicopee Chapin Susan Racilia Upton 1851 54 267 Marriage town Chicopee Chapin Sybil L. Upton 1852 60 251 Marriage town Chicopee Chapin Walter C. Bernardston 1851 54 52 Marriage town Pittsfield The original clerks that typed the index are a source of some town name errors. I've seen Warren and Barre interchanged, Rochester and Worcester interchanged, anything with North, East, South, or West in the name interchanged with any other town with North, East, South, or West in its name. Northborough for Northbridge or Northborough for Southborough are common examples. This also applies to New, Old, Med, Middle, and Field in a town name. Also, they sometimes left off the New in New Bedford and other like named towns. This list seemingly includes most of the Massachusetts town names. The farther away the town was from Boston and the smaller the community, the more likely the error is from the original clerks. Some errors came about in a recent effort by the NEHGS to correct the scanning errors in the town name. For example, the town of Swansea and Swansey had to be corrected to just one version of the name. There were nearly 2,000 entries with an incorrect spelling when the webmaster did a count of towns. The town name may have been so badly mangled, that someone probably thought they knew the correct name, but were less familiar with the smaller communities and picked the wrong one. Another problem involves a column shift on the town field in the database. I haven't actually fixed any of those in a while, so hopefully, we have the bulk of them corrected. These errors will have no relationship to the town name that should be there. Just the town name for the entry that was one or two lines above or below it in the index. The final problem is the town name is not in the town field of the database, see my sample above. This means any query with the town field selected will come up without that entry, since it is blank. There aren't many fortunately, but they are a challenge to find and fix. In all cases, before you discard an entry as unlikely because the town isn't anywhere near where you research subject is supposed to be, check out the entry. Your entry may be actually be on the correct town's page, but the town name for its entry is wrong whatever the reason. Again, please let John Ledden on the NEHGS forum; Dale Cook, Plymouth guru; or me know when you find these things. Sue Richart NEHGS Volunteer

    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] NEHGS MVR 1841-1910 Tip 4: That’s her middle name!
    2. Sue Richart
    3. For those using www.newenglandancestors.org Massachusetts Vital Records 1841-1910 on-line database, here is a tip that may make using it a bit easier. While searching for an entry without success, widen out your search for what might be their middle name. In the case below, the digitizing software was confused by a row of ditto marks and when the full middle name of Louisa came along, it dropped the Sarah for the one entry and added Louisa, instead of Sarah, for the second. Wright Louisa Boston 1854 80 80 Marriage GN Sarah Louisa Wright Louisa L. Ashby 1851 55 35 Marriage GN Sarah L. Wright Sarah A. Barnstable 1855 87 2 Marriage Wright Sarah A. Montgomery 1853 69 390 Marriage Wright Sarah A. Boston 1853 71 62 Marriage Wright Sarah Ann Dighton 1855 87 76 Marriage Wright Sarah E. Charlestown 1853 70 87 Marriage Wright Sarah J. Westfield 1851 54 306 Marriage Wright Sarah K. Worcester 1855 89 279 Marriage Wright Sarah L. Westhampton 1854 79 27 Marriage If you see an error like this, please let John, Dale, or I know, so we can hunt down the others with a problem. Usually these errors cover anywhere from one to six entries, but there have been several grouping of this problem under one surname. Sue Richart NEHGS Volunteer

Well worth it, Articles and radio reports on emergency planning talk about important papers, including not only your key genealogical papers but also the deed to your house, proof of insurance, etc. They suggest having copies of important information outside your home -- in a safe deposit box, your office, a relative's home, etc. For important papers you keep at home, they suggest keeping them together, preferably in a box marked "Emergency Papers" that you can easily grab if you have to leave because of fire or flood. Author: mogwilover Surnames: Berry Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.massachusetts.unknown/6877/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi, My name is Liz and I live in the UK. I hope someone out there can help me with a small family mystery. I am looking at the smaller branches of my family tree and I have a 2nd cousin 3 times removed that appears to have been born in the US. Her family were found in the UK census records of 1871 and 1881, but according to the 1881 UK census record Alice Maud Mary Berry was born circa 1873 in Worster (I believe this should be Worcester) Massachusetts USA. Even though she was born in the US it says on the census record she is a British Citizen, but I cannot find her birth recorded here. The parents of Alice Mary Mary Berry were John Berry born 1839 in Heckmondwike England, occupation coal merchant in 1871 and Mary Ann Berry maiden name Jowett, born 1839 in Snaith, Yorkshire England. Any hints/help gratefully received. Thank you Liz Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
