    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Percy BRIGHAM and Mabel McINNIS 1920 Somerville
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, I've mentioned my gr-grandparents, William KERR and Elizabeth HANNAH many times. William had come down from the Prov. of Quebec ~1874 and his younger sister, Mary Ann KERR, came down to join him a few years later. >From researchers, I have found out that Mary married William McINNIS in Mar. 1882 in Everett - where they lived at the time. And, they had a daughter in 1884. (Supposedly only child.) William and Mary McINNIS are found under McINNES in 1900, 1910, and 1920 in Somerville. A helpful researcher has found out that their daughter, Mabel, married a Percy BRIGHAM. I am finding this couple, also in Somerville, in 1920, and he is listed as a "Sub? Master?" in the high school. Perhaps he was a teacher, or more than a teacher at Somerville High School. This census says that they have a daughter, Marjorie BRIGHAM, 9. BRIGHAM, PERCY A (1920 U.S. Census) MASSACHUSETTS , MIDDLESEX, 5-WD SOMERVILLE Age: 35, Male, Race: WHITE, Born: MA Series: T625 Roll: 719 Page: 58 Percy and Mabel are mentioned in 1910, and it says they had been marrid for 6 months. And, at Age 25, he is a Master at the high school. He seems to be from a MA family. I'm finding lots of BRIGHAM families in MA in 1900, and several people / couples in the Somerville, Cambridge and Medford area. But, I'm not finding a possible family for Percy belong to - at Age 15. Oh, closer look at the census page shows Percy's parents were probably from Maine. And there were BRIGHAM families in Maine going back to 1790, but not too many. Thank you to the several researchers providing information on the above couples. I haven't finished printing out and summarizing the information. But, I thought I would offer the names, in case someone else is interested in the families. Oh, almost forgot. William McINNIS and Mary CARR are listed on the marriage record with those spellings. But census pages say McINNES, and she is a Mary KERR from the Prov. of Quebec. And, I'm told that William's parents were Malcom McINNIS and Esther DUNBRACK, and he had been born in Halifax, NS, CAN. At www.familysearch.org someone has that couple and show them marrying ~1850. And, Malcom's father seems to be Miles McINNIS. (William's age and birth-years are stated differently on each record. But, if he had a 1st marriage in Nova Scotia before coming down to MA ~1880, he was probably born in the 1850's and not the 1860's.) I have more work to do on these families. But -- it's off to the non-computer part of my day ! :o) Oops. I just remembered to check the SSDI, and there is a Percy BRIGHAM of the right age, dying in 1972 in Arlington. And, it appears that his wife, Mabel, died in 1971 in Arlington. (I don't remember my mother or my aunts mentioning this couple, or their daughter, Marjorie BRIGHAM, b~1911. But my mother and aunt grew up in Somerville and Medford and would have known them.) Thank you for your time. Betty (near Lowell, MA)

    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Lists for African-American Research
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, I mentioned the LEW family his MA history over the weekend. And that reminded me that African-American families are not mentioned on this List or other New England Lists very often. I've browsed at the Index for Lists many times in the past, but I just went to the "find a List" feature, and did a search and found this: http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/other/Ethnic-African/AFRICANAMER-GEN.html I'm seeing there are many Lists for the "Freedmen" in some of the US States. And, there are Lists for "Black-Irish" and "Mixed Marriages." On quick look, I'm not seeing a List for "New-England-African-Americans." Just a reminder that you can find out about "every" List by going to the home-page www.rootsweb.com And don't forget all the "Other" and "Miscellaneous" categories in the Index - especially MA-Misc. Betty (near Lowell, MA) P.S. Some Administrators remind researchers that people sometimes get their "first" computer during the Holidays, or get the Internet for the first time. And, if interested in genealogy, they are finding out about the Mailing Lists and Message Boards for the first time. So, they sometimes have questions. (And don't forget their are genealogy "Groups.")

    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] List of Mayors in Boston (O'BRIEN)
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, In this morning's "MassMoments" e-mail there is a story about the first "Irish born" mayor of Boston. http://www.massmoments.org/moment.cfm?mid=10 Further checking on-line shows Boston became a city in 1822. Further checking and I found a list of all the mayors in Boston. Perhaps someone will recognize the many surnames mentioned: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mayors_of_Boston,_Massachusetts Just an FYI for you. Betty (near Lowell, MA)

    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Laura HOULE - Willie BENOIT - Lawrence, MA
    2. Therese Gregoire
    3. I posted a small part of this request a few days ago, but I'm resubmitting & trying to follow suggestions Betty and others gave for queries on the Mass-Essex list. WHAT I KNOW WILLIE BENOIT-LAURA HOULE family Laura HOULE, born 20 Mary 1887 in Nicolet, QC, daughter of Amedee Houle and RoseAnna Doucet, (baptized Marie Emma Laura Houle) was my grandfather’s younger sister, and has been a mystery in more than 12 years of researching. Some info has been found through letter-writing, but what I have is very limited. She had a serious drinking problem and the family apparently cut off contact with her, so that my mother and my uncle had only vague memories of them, even if they lived only blocks away. (1) Laura married Willie BENOIT on 28 May 1906 in Ludlow MA where both worked in mills. (full name, Joseph William Benoit) (2) Census reveals that in 1910, they lived in Springfield, MA and had one son, Freddie. Census of 1920 shows them living in Lawrence, MA. They’ve added 4 children, 2 born in Canada. I have baptismal/birth records for the 2 born in Canada (Irene, Edward), but not those born in US (Rita, Edna). The 1930 Census of Pontiac MI shows another daughter, born around 1922 or 1923 (she’s 7 at the census), living with a bachelor uncle, her mother’s brother Emile. WHAT I NEED: I am still trying to complete information for this family, after 12 years of searching, so ANY help will be appreciated. (1) Gladys BENOIT, the youngest child - for whom I recently posted a query. Looking for her BIRTH, most likely in Lawrence, and/or baptism (Ste Anne’s in Lawrence, I would guess). My mother (deceased) recalled vaguely that she was 4 or 5 years younger than her, putting her birth year at 1922 or 1923. Also, 1930 census gives her age as 7. (2) Births of two siblings, Rita BENOIT (age 3 11/12 at 1920 census, so born around 1916), and Edna (age 9 mos at 1920 census, birth in 1919). (3) DEATH of the mother, my aunt Laura HOULE. One e-mail correspondent thought she had seen that name at Sacred Heart Cemetery in No. Andover, MA. Since Gladys was living with her godfather, Laura’s death would be between 1923 and 1930. Would love to find an obit, but need date of death first. (4) Where was Willie BENOIT in the 1930 census? And the other children? My mother recalled that her cousin Freddie had run away with the circus. He would have been 21 by then, so it's quite possible! Would he show up in census data elsewhere? (5) In the 1920 census, Laura is a naturalized citizen. She was not in the 1910 census. Any chance I can find that record somehow? 3. Thanks for the lookup Kim Henry and Annie seem quite elusive - and maybe I am wrong to think that they came with their young son.. William appears in the 1900 census but not prior to that - we know he was hear earlier as he married in 1884, as you cited. I suppose they could have sent him with someone else.. We did luck into his wife's Ann Caffrey, family - she the daughter of Owen and Anne(Gibney)Caffrey so I will continue to try other ways of finding more about this generation! I appreciate all the info - Again thanks faye -----Original Message----- From: Kim Gawlak [mailto:kimdowns@optonline.net] Sent: Saturday, January 03, 2009 9:38 PM To: faye rees Cc: genmassachusetts@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Look Up Request Henry and Ann (Melia) QUINN Hi Faye -- I found the marriage record for William F. 3. Hi Betty, I found it.... (Vol 335, pg 99) On 15 March 1882, William McINNIS married Mary A. CARR in Everett (where both resided). He was a carpenter and age 26 -- she was 24. His place of birth says Halifax, Nova Scotia -- hers just says Canada. It was his second marriage, and her first. He was the son of Malcolm and Esther -- her parents are not listed -- just a blank space.... (was she an orphan?) Ceremony performed by (it looks like) T. Corwin/Courvin Watkins, Pastor M. E. Church I then looked to see if there was a first marriage for him, or a death of his first wife, but couldn't find anything -- maybe that happened while he was still in Canada?? Happy New Year! 1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] McINNES marriage 1882, census 1930
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, I just looked in the archives of a few Lists, and I'm not finding any posting of mine requesting look-ups for a William McINNES and Mary KERR. So, I'd appreciate someone doing this for me: William McINNES and Mary Ann KERR both were born in Canada in 1860's. William came down ~1880 and Mary had come down ~1875. And, from census information, they seem to have married in MA 1882 or 1883. I was wondering if someone could find the marriage record for them. It would have been in the Malden, Everett, or Somerville area. (One census record says that this was a 2nd marriage for William. It's possible he had married and been widowed in Canada before he came down to MA. But, that also depends on which is the correct year for him migrating.) Also, a couple years ago someone found the couple in the census information; they thought of that spelling, and I hadn't. I have them in the 1900, 1910, and 1920 census. And, I would like to know if they were still alive in 1930. They were living in Somerville during those years. (See below.) In the spring I'll try to get to Somerville City Hall and see what information on them I can find there. The only child I know about is a daughter, Mabel McINNES. According to 1900 census she was born in MA in Nov. 1884. Thank you for your time. Betty (near Lowell, MA) FYI: William was supposedly born in Canada/English ~1865, and came down from 1878 to 1881 - depending on different records. He might have had a brother or cousin, Hugh McINNES coming down with him and living in Cambridge. I'm interested in his parents. (I have the information on Mary's parents; they came down from the Prov. of Quebec during 1880's.) In case it will help, this William in census records: MCINNES, WILLIAM (1920 U.S. Census) MASSACHUSETTS , MIDDLESEX, 5-WD SOMERVILLE Age: 67, Male, Race: WHITE, Born: CANA Series: T625 Roll: 719 Page: 58 MCINNES, WILLIAM (1910 U.S. Census) MASSACHUSETTS , MIDDLESEX, 5-WD SOMERVILLE Age: 58, Male, Race: WHITE, Born: CANA Series: T624 Roll: 605 Page: 30 OOOPS. 1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Herman MELVILLE leaving New Bedford in 1841
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, In this morning's "MassMoments" daily e-mail there is a story about the author, Herman MELVILLE. He was born and raised in NY, but in 1841 he was getting on a "whaler" in New Bedford, MA, which was heading out to the Pacific Ocean. http://www.massmoments.org:80/moment.cfm?mid=8 I just noticed that it was only 3 years later when the man I'm looking for, James CLARK, got on a ship in New Bedford - which was heading out for a 4-year voyage to the Indian Ocean. If Herman was at sea for 5 years, it makes me wonder whether men at sea on whalers (etc.) ever met up with each other ! Herman was on the "Acushnet." OOPS. I just tried to access the "data base of mariners" at the New Bedford (MA) Public Library, and they seem to have changed their web site. I was going to remind myself of which ship / whaler James CLARK got on. Oh, I just went to the archives of the MA Bristol List, and found my old posting, and it showed James was on the ship, "Ocean." Betty (near Lowell, MA) (It is only an "educated guess" that James CLARK is my ancestor. When his married daughter and her husband adopted a little girl in 1892 in MA, I believe they were her grandparents, but cannot prove it.)

There is a Scituate marriage of Benoni Studley and Abigail no last name in 1701 wiith several children listed usually under the fathers name Benoni, Benomy etc. with no wife listed assume this is the person you seek.
