    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Wamesit, Chelmsford, Lowell, Tewksbury
    2. Betty
    3. Hi Janice, Thank you for posting this. John KIDDER is one of my ancestors; he was one of the 12 children of the patriarch, James KIDDER, of Cambridge and Billerica. John married Lydia PARKER (of Abraham) in Chelmsford, and they also had 12 children. Unfortunately there is very little information on them, especially the daughters. I go from their son, Thomas. I believe it is the "KIDDER book" which has a mistake. It says that it was only John KIDDER who bought the land. One of the "history of Lowell" books also said the correct information. And one book said that John sold some of the land near the Pawtucket Falls for "a bushel of corn." Because I know the area, I believe that the Wamesit Purchase involved what is now what is referred to as "South Lowell" (a neighborhood in the city). And part of that is the meeting up of Chelmsford and Tewksbury. And there is a part of the northern part of Tewksbury which is called "Wamesit," and in a very small park there is a statue of a Native American man. In "South Lowell" the set of cemeteries are part of it. The area involves Gorham St. (3A) in Lowell and the adjoining neighborhood is the "Back Central" neighborhood which is part of "Downtown Lowell. Both neighborhoods have the Concord River, which came up from the "Concord Falls" in Billerica. Just an FYI for you. Betty (near Lowell, MA) (By the way, a reminder that there are books about the Concord River, especially ".. a Week Along the Concord and Merrimack Rivers ....")

The family plot was purchased ca 1880 and unfortunately there was no marker. I've been trying (unsuccessfully) to find where my 3rd g-grandmother died and was buried. I feel there is a slight possibility that she may have been buried with her son's family mentioned in the first paragraph. The family name was CARGILL and she lived with two other elderly ladies and if she indeed died at Boston there's no telling how her name may have been corrupted. Without spending a lot of money, is there a suggestion as to how I might determine if she's at Holy Cross, Malden? She was born in Maine and was a long-time Boston resident. She may have returned to Maine after her son died or gone to Minnesota where her other son lived. thanks, Charles ------------------------------ Message: 2 Date: Mon, 12 Jan 2009 19:14:05 -0000 From: "gc-gateway@rootsweb.com" <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> Subject: Re: [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Rundstrom To: <GenMassachusetts@rootsweb.com> Message-ID: <1231787647.7038@rootsweb.com> Content-Type: text/plain; This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Have you found the family in the 1900 census, and in 1910/1920/1930? If not, then you might want to post to the MA-census-lookup list... I tried to look at the image for marriage of Peter F. in 1886, but the image is all ripped up, in pieces, backwards/upside-down (never really saw anything like it before!)... However!! I was able to look at the death certificate for Peter F. in Oct, 1910, and it's definitely your man... Birthdate and parents' names match up. He was born in Sweden, 19 Sept 1843, to Erasmus and Marie (KJELLBERG). He was a Barber, and resided at 217 Main St. in Everett, which is where he died (of Cirrhosis of liver). He's buried at Glenwood Cemetery in Everett. It says the informant was his wife but doesn't give her name. She is listed as "Benia/Bina L. HELRICH," it looks like, on the birth records of Dora/Edith/Helen... So, if this is your Peter F,, as it appears to be, then it would appear that he arrived in the US long before his "first wife" died in Australia!!?? He would've arrived in time to marry Benia/Bina in Mass. in 1886! What do you think?? Also, this is what the Social Security Death Index has for RUNDSTROM in Mass.: 2 records were found for ' rundstrom' in the following documents: Name SSN Born Died Residence Last Payment SSN Issued Ivar RUNDSTROM 017-10-7346 5 Jun 1914 Sep 1984 Auburn Worcester MA 01501 MA Aurora RUNDSTROM 027-09-3011 5 Aug 1905 May 1981 Auburn Worcester MA 01501 MA Hope this is helpful! The original index does show Axer. There is an entry for Susanna Bergquist also on this volume and page, so it definitely appears to be their marriage. Unfortunately, this is an amended record. All volume 8, but some 1843-44 death records, are amended records for Boston. I've checked both the database and the original index for any indication of another record, but I can't find one. Marg, to get this marriage record you need to submit a request to the Massachusetts State Archives or to the City of Boston Archives. The NEHGS database Kim is checking is not going to get the amended records. Those have never been released by the state. 1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Wamesit became Lowell, Massachusetts - History of Chelmsford.
    2. Wamesit - became Lowell, Massachusetts Source: History of Chelmsford, Mass. By the Wamesit Purchase the Indians relinquished forever, to their white neighbors, their ancient possessions upon the south Side of the Merrimack and west of the Concord rivers. Here from immemorial time their wigwams had dotted the landscape and their frail canoes had glided over the waters of the Merrimack. They hunted the noble game of the forest and plied their rude arts all unconscious of the mighty changes to be wrought upon their native haunts by the white man's civilization. Through the kind offices of the apostle John Eliot, this tract had been reserved to the Indians by an act of the General Court in 1653. Their title now passed to other hands and their home from henceforth was in the northern wildeness. It was such a movement as has since become somewhat familiar in Indian history. Allen* states that a few Indian families still "remained at Wamesit several years; and others were occasionally there on hunting and fishing parties and for the purpose of visiting their English friends and former neighbors." Several families lingered upon the Dracut side - of the river as late as 1820. Two Indian pilots were employed about that time, to guide the log rafts down the river, one at Wickiseck and the other at Hunt's falls. (The rafts were taken apart above Pawtucket falls and the logs floated around by way of the canal and Concord river). But from the time of King Philip's war the Indians had practically abandoned their Wamesit "plantation" and in 1685 the people of Chelmsford took steps looking to the purchase of their title. *History of Chelmsford, . 151, L. Hamblet, Esq. 512 HISTORY OF CHELMSFORD The Wamesit purchase was consummated by Jonathan Tyng, Esq., of Dunstable, and Maj. Thomas Hinchman of Chelmsford the same year, and conveyed by them - the year following, to fifty proprietors living in Chelmsford. The conveyance from Tyng and Hinchman was by separate deeds one from each conveying to the fifty associates one moiety, or half part of one fiftieth of the entire purchase, to each purchaser. The original deeds, executed upon scrolls of buckskin, * are now in the possession of a descendant of one of these proprietors now living in this city. The Wamesit purchase conveyed to these 50 Chelmsford proprietors: Thomas Hinchman, John fisk, Josiah Richardson senr and to their associates, Mr Moses ffisk, of Brantry, Mr Tho clarke, Josiah Richardson Junr Jeriluneel Bowers, James Richardson, Thomas Parker, Solomon Keys Junr, Joseph Parkiss senr Joseph Hide, Edward Spaldin Senr Samuel ffietcher, Steuen Peirse, Benjamin Parker, Moses Parker, Andrew Spalden, Eliazar Browne, William Underwood, Nathaniel Howard, John Wright Junr John Perrum, John Spalden Junr Josiah ffletcher, Benjamin Spaldin, Joseph Spalden, Joseph ffarwell, Solomon Keys Senr Peter Talbott, John Kidder, William ffletcher, Samuel ffoster Junr Edward ffoster, Sam ffoster Senr John Steuens, Nathaniel Butterfield, Samuel Butterfield, Joseph Butterfield, John Spaldin Senr John Shipley, Mr Cornelius Waldo Senr George Robbins, John Parker, John Bates, Gersham Proctor, Peter Proctor, Isaack Parker, Abraham Parker, to each of them and to every one of them, their heires and assignes, and to each and Every of their heirs and assignes, for ever, to their only proper use and behoove, one moiety or half part of weymesit lands which were solid by ye Indians of said Weymesit to the said Jonathan Ting, by a deed of sale baring date, the sixth day of Septembr last past, the moiety or half of said Weymesett lands being at ye same time and by ye same instrument Conveyed to Maj: Hinchman aforesaid, this above said grant contained in this instrument, containes the one half of the wholl purchase which was joyntly, made by the afore sd Thomas Hinchman and Jonathan Ting, the wholl purchase containing all that part of Indian plantation called Weymesitt, & lying on ye west side of Concord River, but not taking any part of the Indian field that is within fence and ditch, by Concord River side, but said land is bounded eastward, by said field & Concord River, from the most southerly Corner, (which is at Chelmsford corner stake, where Billerica, Chelmsford & Weymesitt land meet all at one stake, by ye river side) until you come to the mouth of Concord River by Merimacke, bounded Northward by Merimack riuer & Westward by Wanalansits old field, and Maj: Hinchmans land, formerly purchased by him of the indians, and on ye South West it is bounded by Chelmsford according to a former exchange between said Towne, & said Weymesitt Indians. Allen states that "The first English settlements made on the Indian plantation were on the borders of Concord River, upon a plot of ground much resembling a heater, which gave rise to the name Concord River Neck." Here lived Solomon Keyes, (son of Solomon and Frances, b. June 24,1665) as early as 1714, and his hardy son Solomon (b. May 11, 1701) who later was one of the heroes of the famous Lovewell's fight. Among the original proprietors of the Wamesit Purchase, Benjamin Parker was the only one whose possessions there have continued in the hands of his descendants to the present time. He was a son, of Jacob and Sarah Parker, (b. July, 1663). *See "The Wamesit Purchase." (above) THE WAMESIT PURCHASE. BY HENRY S. PERHAM, CHELMSFORD. 1. Re: [GENMASSACHUSETTS] NEHGS Mass Vital Records 1841-1910: Figuring out amended records
    2. Sue Richart
    3. Audrey, This is going to sound like a glib answer, but whatever the clerk wrote or the owner of the name wanted written. Of interest, I checked the microfilm of the Saugus Vital Records today to see if or how amended records were recorded. One of the entries changed, but not an amended record or at least not on my partial list of Saugus amended record, was just that change from Stewart to Stuart as a surname. Most of the amended records for Saugus I did check had the word "disposition" next to the name of records that were recorded in the state archives as amended records. It appears that if the change was made prior to the book being closed then the change and a note as to why the change occurred is recorded on the page, if not you won't see an explanation. Not sure I can help with your question as it is individual specific. 1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] "New-England-Memories" (new List)
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, I have been given permission to announce my new List on this List. I started it last month so that researchers could have a place to discuss the lives and times of their ancestors, or their grandparents, etc. The how's and why's and how-comes's of their lives. And, you can discuss memories of your childhoods - if they involve the early 1900's. It has been placed under the Miscellaneous category in the Index of the Lists, so you need to scroll down to the bottom of this page to find the "information page" for the new List: "New-England-Memories" http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/usa/misc/misc.html I have only been unofficially mentioning the new List to a few people and we already have ~45 subscribers. But, because of the Holiday season and the Winter weather, it has not become active, yet. Enjoy. Betty (near Lowell, MA) (on Lists for 8 years; now an Administrator of 8 Lists) (I have not been given permission to announce this new List on the CT and RI Lists, and I have not yet received a response from the Administrator of the Maine List.)

    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] 1700's Billerica families to Canada
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, Since it has been mentioned on the Lists about the group of families which Philemon WRIGHT from Winchester took to Canada in 1800, I am remembering something I heard about maybe 5 yrs. ago. Perhaps it was my participation on the KIDDER List that I learned that a group of families left Billerica and migrated to Canada. I seem to remember they were Loyalists or Sympathizers which meant they probably migrated in the late 1700's. I've been searching on-line for information on this, and searching the archives of several Lists, and I'm not finding this migration mentioned. In the archives of the KIDDER List, I did find a mention of a Richard KIDDER from VT who migrated to Canada just after 1800. Did he join the families who had gone there from Billerica, MA? There is a town of Wyman, in the Province of Quebec, but I just checked the "Billerica book," and the WYMAN paragraph does not mention any migration to Canada. And actually the early families were in Woburn (on Billerica line). It was probably 5-6 years ago that I was curious whether Billerica was a unique place-name. It was then that I found out that there was a Town of Billerica in Canada for a short time. I think it became Hull or Pontiac in (now) the Province of Quebec. And, in the mention of Richard KIDDER of VT, it mentions Hull. If it is possible that Richard went to live near the Billerica (MA) families, it always amazes me how families / people in the 1700's in the Colonies found ways to correspond with each other, or find out what other people were doing ! Betty (near Lowell, MA) (On looking at the Table of Contents for the "history of Billerica" (1883) surprisingly I'm not spotting a chapter or page on Loyalists.)

Boston 1886 372 7 Marriage View Image View Non-Plugin Image I looked at the birth for "Dora," but she was the dtr. of Peter, not Axel... "Edith" was also dtr. of Peter, as was "Helen." Have you found the family in the 1900 census, and in 1910/1920/1930? 1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Holy Cross Cemetery--Malden
    2. My gg-grandfather and family was interred at Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden. She may have returned to Maine after her son died or gone to Minnesota where her other son lived. thanks, Charles

    2. Kim Gawlak
    3. Hi Alyssa, Got it -- NEHGS vol 99, pg. 184: Charles JOHNSON married Mary Ann TAYLOR, in Lynn, on 9 October 1856. He was age 29 and a resident of Nahant; she was age 24 and a resident of Lynn. He was a fisherman, born in Harpswell, Maine -- the son of Joseph JOHNSON (no info. on his mother). Mary Ann was born in England; her father was Thomas TAYLOR. Interestingly, it does say that it's the first marriage for both... Hope this is helpful. 3. I'd like to locate the marriage record of a Charles W Johnson, that married a Mary A {Unknown}. They would have wed between 1854 (when previous wife died), and 1860 (their child was 2 months old at the time of the 1860 census on aug 27 1860). Charles was born in Maine abt 1828. I believe he may be the Charles that is child of Joseph JOHNSON and Susanna FOSTER, and first wife was Abigail BLAKE. Mary A was supposedly born in England abt 1831 according to the 1860 census. Can anyone locate this marriage record for me? They likely wed in Nahant, Mass. Thanks in advance. -- ~*~ Allyssa (New England, USA) ~*~ (I am house-bound, so can only search from home.
