It provides the only statewide source of records & indexes. A few other locations also have the index books, but these would be the same indexes that Registry uses. If they can't find the record it is improbable, but not impossible, the marriage took place in Mass. It's possible that a city/town's record somehow failed to be included in the state's copies of records. Basically, each city/town keeps track of its own vital records, but is supposed to forward copies to the state. So the only other location where the record would be is with a city/town clerk. The other unfornate fact is that people didn't always marry where they lived. In my own research, I have found people who lived in Mass. marrying in RI, NH, Canada, & even North Carolina. Maybe someone with an Ancestry subscription could find Neil listed in a city directory for the 1940s, which could give you a possible locale where he lived. Quite possible he travelled to the USA prior to the rest of the family. Note the name at the bottom of the list of people in residence! Grace MCKENZIE age 70 was born in Wick according to the index, with a 'private income'. Might be a good idea too, to go to SP to look for a birth for one of the children. It will give the parents marriage date, plus will give you the names of both sets of parents for them (Murdo/ch & Christine), inlcuding the m/s of both mother's. Then go for Grace's death cert, which as long as the informant knew, would have the names of her parents, plus her mother's m/s. No birth year/age given. This Angus was single; a 'mechanic'. According to the transcribed index, there was also an A. E.? HENDERSON who was also on the same trip, but upon looking at the original image of the manifest, I read the name as ANDERSON (a number of passengers with this surname). It most definately does not look like HENDERSON. Nor are their ticket numbers anywhere near the same. There are 3 groups of separate HENDERSONs (10 persons in all) who set sail from Glasgow aboard the 'Caledonia' on 13 June 1911. There is one Angus, but birth year is 1907- and is listed as a female on the index. Original does not give sex of child, but clearly says Angus, with age (4) listed in the female colume. There is no Alexander among them either. They dis-embarked in NYC. There is another Angus HENDERSON who sailed from Liverpool on 6th March 1911, again aboard the Ivernia, arriving in Boston. No date of birth or age given for this Angus either. He was single, a 'clerk'. No other HENDERSONs on this manifest. Don't be put off by 'Liverpool' being the place they set sail from, if your family was Scottish. The ship could have started out from Glasgow or even further north, but made a stop in Liverpool. Liverpool then would become the last UK port, therefore where the manifest was finalized and be recorded as being the port the ship sailed from. Have you found your families on the census records for Scotland? Do you know about www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk (aka SP)? You should be able to find out a great deal about your families via SP, plus using the census. If you would like me to look at the census indices for Scotland, let me know. I can only look the indices, not the original images. SP has some census records, but there is also Freegen, within which you may find them as well. I did that, but they had no record of his marriage. I'm 99.999999999999% confident he was married in MA after WWII. I asked NH for a marriage search, but no response yet. Author: amich2 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.massachusetts.unknown/6887.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Did you actually contact the state registry for locating the record? I would assume you used one of those online search services to try & find the marriage record. I assume this because you got a generic suggestion to do a county search. Unlike most states, Massachusetts' counties do not handle vital records. Vital records are available through either the state or local (city/town) level. The easiest & usually most affordable method for obtaining a post-1915 record is through the city/town. Unfortunately, you don't know where he married. That leaves the state records. Unfortunately, Massachusetts does not make it easy to research post-1915 records, so you'll probably have trouble finding someone who can just look-up the record for you. It's probable you would have to hire a professional researcher to do a look-up for you. There is only one location that holds statewide vital records, the Registry of Vital Records and Statistics. It cost $9/hour to research there, & they limit the number of records you can access. I also hear they're not very welcoming of genealogical researchers. The website for the state's registry is at http://www.mass.gov/?pageID=eohhs2terminal&&L=5&L0=Home&L1=Government&L2=Departments and Divisions&L3=Department of Public Health&L4=Programs and Services K - S&sid=Eeohhs2&b=terminalcontent&f=dph_vital_records_g_about&csid=Eeohhs2 The one other thing I can think of to do is to see if you can have a look-up done in the state marriage index to find out where Neil married, & then you could directly deal with the city/town. I know the State Archives & the New England Historic Genealogical Society both have books containing an index. You can try e-mailing either location to see if they will do the look-up for you, but they may want to charge you for it. You could then use that info to contact the City/Town Clerk for the record. Their websites: http://www.sec.state.ma.us/arc/arcres/residx.htm http://www.newenglandancestors.org/research/services/2198.asp The marriage index, by the way, will not give you the bride's name, nor any info on Neil. It will give you a year & city/town. I just want to make you aware that it may be difficult to find your marriage. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. If you would be so kind, Angus' brother Alexander Henderson (born 26 Dec 1876) traveled with him to America in the early 1900s, and I think married a lady with the first name of Christine. They seem to have lived with or around Angus for at least the first while. Any information on Alexander would be a huge help. Thanks!
