That's an unusual surname. I just looked it up in census pages, and looked for IZAN, IZEN, ISAN, ISEN. There were like less than 1000 people with that name in the US in the 1880 to 1920 timeframe. And the people were either from Germany or Russia. There were only a few people in MA with the name, and I couldn't find anyone with an occupation which involved shoes. The closest occupation was a Chiropodist. :o) (British term for our Podiatrist) I'll keep thinking about this. Betty .. 1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] "Jay Shoe Manufacturing Co." (JAY)
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, Someone on the MA "Board" has mentioned the "Jay Shoe Mfg. Co." in Cambridge. It was reported to have been at 120 Potter St. I just checked my old street-map of Cambridge, and I'm only finding a short Potter Place. Probably there was a Potter St. and it was renamed. Potter Place is off of Mass. Ave., near the Somerville line I've looked on-line twice, and I find it mentioned on only a few sites. And it is mentioned in regards to several states. And, I've seen "Jay shoes" mentioned a few times. But, I'm not finding any sites which talks about the company. I just remembered to check the surname, JAY, and in 1920 I find a Frank JAY (from MA) in Cambridge. But, he has an unusual occupation: Engineer in a Crematory. There's a Fred JAY in Somerville (from England), and he is a manufacturer, but I can't read the company name: .. O... house? There's a Harry JAY in Cambridge (from Canada), but the occupations on that page are unreadable. There's a Stephen JAY in Cambridge (from ME), and he is another man working in the "Rubber shop." (Watertown?) Here's another unusual record. There's a Stephen JAY in Somerville (from MA) who is listed as a "patient" (with another man) in the private home of a TARBELL family - where Mr. TARBELL is listed as an Automobile Salesman. Oh, at the top of the page it says that these 2 "patients" are mentioned as "Tuberculosis Cumb? / Camb?." Does anyone remember this company? Betty (near Lowell, MA)

Pacheco came from. The only clues I have are on his death record and my baby book. Unfortunately, there are no living family members who can clarify for me. I do know, though, that he worked at Jay Shoe Mfg. in Cambridge, MA (120 Potter St.). (Rubber for shoes?) This is listed on his WWII Registration card. I also know that he was working for Jay Shoe Co. in Saint Petersburg, FL. He is listed as "maintanence man". Both he and his wife Mary died in St. Pete, FL in 1967. I don't know when they moved (sometime after 1941 - last record I have of him in MA). I'll try again to find the 1910 census. He may have been living at home with his parents or married (He and Mary were married "abt" 1910). This could help a lot. I'm just looking at census information, and I'm seeing some similarities between your John, and my husband's Antonio (Anthony / Tony). For one thing, they both worked at the "Rubber shop" in 1920. I just asked my husband, and he said it might have been the "Simplex Wire & Cable Co." on Portland St., Cambridge. Also, your John was 34, arriving 1903, and my Tony was 34, arriving 1904 (according to census). Also, your John had a nephew?, living with them, Joseph PACHECO, 22, who arrived in 1916. If John was 34, and he had a nephew, 22, then John must have had a much older brother. (Older brother, possibly 55? ??) (The nephew also worked in the Rubber shop.) As I said, if you can find out if your family came from the Ponta Degada area of Sao Miguel, then we might find a strong connection. Author: bbffrrpp Surnames: Pacheco, Pachico, Moura, Morris Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.massachusetts.unknown/6913.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi again. Are you aware that St. Michael's and Sao Miguel are the same island? If you can find out which part of the island they came from, we may be able to make some sort of connection. My Antonio PACHECO came from Sao Roque which is right beside Ponta Delgada. When I first started researching his family, I joined the Azores List. I got a lot of useful information from researchers there. A few live in the Azores. But the List is not as active as it used to be. And some researchers have started up "Groups" on the subject. Once in a while I join the Portugal List, and there are helpful researchers there. (There is also a "Group" for that.) And, don't forget to search the archives of the Azores List and the MA Lists to see if your family has been discussed before. I have never found Antonio at the "Ellis Island Museum" site, mostly because there were several Antonio's and I don't know which one is him. Don't forget that some immigrants don't remember which year they arrived in the US, so you have to think about all the years being mentioned. And the "death record" is filled out by a family member, and he or she might not remember the correct dates. Betty (The grandmother, "Elsie" MOURA, was only 12 when she arrived in the US (MA) and she was to be an "indentured servant" for 7 yrs. She went to a family on Beacon Hill in Boston. She reportedly came over ~1905, also. But I can't find her at "Ellis Island," either. So, I don't know whether she traveled alone, with an aunt, or possibly with a younger sister.) (One "guess" is that her father went to Brooklyn, NY, when her mother came to Cambridge, MA. So, one possibility is that her father brought her over, and then he stayed in NY and she came up to MA.) In genealogy, there is a lot of "guessing" and using an imagination. By the way, another researcher found a family I was looking for - under the PACHICO spelling. So you need to come up with all different spellings of a name. (When Tony and Elsie married in Cambridge, her parents were written down as having the MORRIS name. "American" version of their surname, MOURA.) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] SAVAGE surname
    2. Betty
    3. Hi again, Out of curiousity, I just tried to find Frederick W. SAVAGE in census pages, and the only time I'm finding a possible man is in Manhattan, NY, in 1910: SAVAGE, FREDERICK W (1910 U.S. Census) NEW YORK , NEW YORK, 12-WD MANHATTAN Age: 52, Male, Race: WHITE, Born: ME Series: T624 Roll: 1021 Page: 20 This says he was born in Maine, and so were his parents. When looking for him, I found out that SAVAGE is a very popular name. But, I don't remember this surname being mentioned on the Lists too often. The census page says that this Frederick is single, and living in the home of a couple from CT. And at that time he is a laborer for a building contractor. If he was 52 in 1910, and this is the same man, he would have been in his 50's when he was unjustly committed to the series of State Hospitals. I wonder where he went after he was released. Betty (near Lowell, MA) (Strangely, there is a different, younger Frederick SAVAGE working as an employee in the Augusta State Hospital in Maine in 1920.) (Also strangely, I'm seeing on-line that a younger, Frederick W. SAVAGE, 21, married in Manhatten, NY, in 1909.) (See my other postings from this morning for further information.)

    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] F. W. SAVAGE, "Hood Rubber" - State Hospitals
    2. Betty
    3. Hi again, When I posted about the old article in the "New York Times" from 1914, I became curious whether F. W. SAVAGE was released from the NY State Hospital. http://query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9502E5DA1F39E633A25752C2A9609C946596D6CF He believed he had been "committed" to a MA State Hospital - unjustly - by the officers at the "Hood Rubber Company" - because they fought with him about an invention of his. I just searched again, and find another article in the "NY Times" which says he was "freed." But, he was in the NY State Hospitals for over 3 years before the "Supreme Court" ordered his release. He was released in 1915. That means he might have been in "State Hospitals" for 4-5 years before he "won his case." http://query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9505EFD81238E633A25750C0A9629C946496D6CF "Fred" SAVAGE was originally an employee of the Hood Rubber Co. in Watertown, and he invited a way of manufacturing the rubber boots which would save the company money. I'm not seeing a date in the first article of when the company first had him "committed," but it was probably before 1910. It says "they" arranged for him to be committed to the Boston State Hospital, and then later he was transferred to the Massachusetts State Hospital in Westboro. When it was discovered that he was a resident of NY, he was transferred to the Hudson River State Hospital in Poughkeepsie, NY, and then he was transferred again to the Ogdensburg State Hospital in NY. Savage's attorney's stated that the company had spent $100,000 to "keep" Savage incarcerated - over 3 years. Betty (near Lowell, MA) (My husband says that "big, very rich families" in NY and MA, etc. - did that sort of thing !)

    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Hood Rubber Company (PACHECO)
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, Someone has written to me about the PACHECO name in Cambridge and Somerville around 1920. Last year someone else wrote to me about the name. My husband grew up believing his late grandfather, Antonio / Anthony PACHECO, had no relatives in New England. * But, the lady who wrote to me last year, believes that her grandparents "were" related to him. They both came from the same village in Sao Miguel, Azores. And, I just checked census pages for the other grandparents this morning, and I'm seeing similarities there, also. The query this morning is about John PACHECO in Somerville. One coincidence is that both John and Anthony "Tony" worked at the "Rubber Shop." (as did John's nephew, Joseph) I just asked my husband, and he said it might have been the "Simplex Wire & Cable Co." on Portland St., Cambridge. But, then he remembered the "Hood Rubber Co." (1920) I just searched on-line for "Hood Rubber" and found an interesting newspaper article in the "New York Times" from 1914. You might like to read this article about a man who was an inventor and he found a way to save "Hood Rubber" some money. For his efforts? He ended up in a "State Hospital." http://query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9502E5DA1F39E633A25752C2A9609C946596D6CF This page offers a brief biography of George HOOD, once owner of "Hood Rubber." http://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/rbmscl/hood/inv/ Here are some pictures of the company - at a library: http://old.watertownlib.org/Photos/toc-bus05.html The company was mentioned in a "MassMoments" e-mail: http://massmoments.org/moment.cfm?mid=123 Oh, here is a short history of the company; looks like it was in business for ~75 years. And, I'm seeing it was in Watertown, not in Cambridge. http://h2otown.info/node/2319?mini=calendar/2008/7/all& Here is a history of the "Simplex Wire and Cable Co." http://atlantic-cable.com/CableCos/Simplex/index.htm Betty (near Lowell, MA) * Antonio PACHECO was killed in a car accident in Taunton in 1927. His widow was pregnant with twins at the time and delivered a month later. And she had 5 young children besides that. My "hunch" now is that she remained angry at her late husband for the rest of her life, and that is why she wouldn't talk about him. (up to 1980). Elsie was only about 35 when she was widowed, and she never remarried. I believe the lady who wrote last year was related to the Manuel PACHECO in Cambridge in 1920, but I'll have to check my notes. I just rechecked, and there were almost 250 PACHECO's in MA in 1920, and 218 of them were in Bristol County, 18 of them were in Middlesex County. (And "Tony" was listed as PACHICO in 1910.) In Middlesex Co., most were in Cambridge and Somerville, but 3 people were in Lowell. (Don't forget there was a Portuguese neighborhood in Lowell.)

My husband's grandfather was Antonio PACHECO who came to MA / US ~1905, but he came from the Azores. He was a 20-yr-old and came from Sao Miguel. His parents were Joao PACHECO and Jacintha COSTA, who probably remained in the Azores. I don't know where Antonio first lived, but he settled in Cambridge, MA, and married there ~1911. He was killed in a car accident in 1927, and his long-time widow always told her grandchildren that her late husband did not have any relatives in MA or New England. But, I heard from a lady last fall who said her PACHECO grandparents also lived in Cambridge, MA, and also came from the same village in Sao Miguel. So, we are beginning to believe that Mrs. PACHECO lied to her grandchildren. She was pregnant with twins in 1927 and delivered a month later; both babies died before they were 2. She had 5 children who did survive and she had to raise them alone. So, I now think she remained angry at her late husband for the rest of her life. Mrs. Elsie (MOURA) PACHECO also came over ~1905 but as a 12-yr-old. She was to be an indentured servant for 7 years. Her mother and 4 siblings came over ~1910; I don't know what happened to her father, Francisco MOURA. Some members of this extended family did live in Somerville, and spouses included the names, MEDEIROS and PERRY / PEREIRA. ..
