    3. Civil War records often have age at enlistment and location. These can be used along with the census to narrow the person. Revolutionary records usually not as complete so location and Military unit may help. Of course there will always be more than one in a particular area such as John smith etc. Often a father and son or Uncles. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: jjcaffrey Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.massachusetts.unknown/6917.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The 1880 census has a William and Evaline, along with daughters Helen and Evalina living in Killingly. William works on a farm, was born in RI, and his father was born Ct, but mother born in RI. Evaline and her parents were born in RI.They appear on the census page right after 71 year old Brayton Slater, born in CT, and what appears to be his (other?)children Helen, Susan and David. In 1900, William and William Jr are living together in Killingly. Father is a widower; son dob is listed as Nov 1888. William Jr is listed as born in CT, as was his mother. Father is listed as born in RI. In 1910, the father has a new wife, Gertrude, and the likely son is married to Alice with a daughter Beatrice. I did not find a birth record for an Eveline Howlett in MA. I would probably believe the 1880 Census record, which showed Evaline as 20 years old. I suspect this is her in 1870. Unfortunately the relationships are not included back then. 1870 United States Federal Census about Evelina A Howlett Name: Evelina A Howlett Estimated Birth Year: abt 1860 Age in 1870: 10 Birthplace: Rhode Island Home in 1870: Killingly, Windham, Connecticut Race: White Gender: Female Value of real estate: View Image Post Office: West Killingly Household Members: Name Age Willis H Shipper 48 Laura Shipper 32 Willis H Shipper 5 Leonora L Shipper 3 Lebbens Graves 57 Evelina A Howlett 10 Good luck. 1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Waltham 1850 Hotel / Boarding House?
    2. Carol Botteron
    3. In the 1850 census for Waltham, Middlesex Co., Mass., dwelling house 123, family 180 (the first two columns in the census) housed about 30 people. The first person is listed as C. F. Page, age 49, male, hotel keeper born N.H. I can't tell what street it's on. It may have been a boarding house rather than what we would call a hotel; the couple I was looking for were there with three young children. Does anyone know Mr. Page or have any pointers about hotels or boarding houses in Waltham? I can't find Page in the 1860 census. adTHANKSvance! Carol B. P.S. The spelling etc. may be off even by census standards. I was looking for Dwight Hixon & family; this census lists him as L. (or D.) Huckson, but from family details I think it's the right family.

    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Early Vets--The Right Guy?
    2. I'm interested in military records up to and including the Civil War. I'm not from Mass. and I don't have access to all the records. I joined the SAR on an ancestor on the service of an individual who is definitely my ancestor. I am familiar with the 17-vol set of Rev. War Records and the 9-vol set of Civil War records. Boths sets are very helpful, but how do we determine that our ancestor or family member is indeed the individual who served when there are others with the same name in the same area? Not every vet had a pension record which is invaluable. Family tradition can be wrong--is there anything else that may confirm military service? thanks

William Augustus Slater's father is listed as William (S. ?) Slater, age 45, born in Killingly, CT - farmer. William Augustus Slater's mother is listed as Eveline (middle name LOOKS LIKE Alwjlder) Howlett, age 28, born in Foster, Rhode Island. Number of child is listed as "3", so William Augustus Slater has siblings. I, also have the Marriage License for William A. Slater - age 18 at time of marriage - (married Alice E. Keach - age 17 at time of marriage) and the name of his mother is "Eveline" NO MAIDEN NAME, birthplace of mother is, "Mass." The name of William A. Slater's father (on his marriage license) is William A. Slater, birthplace of father is, "Mass." Alice E. Keach and William A. Slater were married on 3 June 1905 in Danielson, Connecticut. I believe that the William A. Slater that married Alice E. Keach is the same William Augustus Slater that was born on 20 Nov. 1887. Since Alice E. Keach is my Great Grandfather's sister, I am seeking information to verify this - particularly looking for info about William A. Slater's mother, Eveline A. Howlett. There are quite a few William Slaters' and I think that by concentrating on Eveline A. Howlett I can find some answers. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
