Hello, I'd just like to remind researchers, or tell new researchers, what a good book the "history of Billerica, MA," is. It is half text and half Genealogy, and there are thousands of surnames mentioned in the book. And it includes the history of the MA Bay Colony in the text. And it is well organized. The "history of Chelmsford, MA" is also full of information. (Actually there are 2, a larger book and a smaller book.) But, in my opinion it is not as well organized as the Billerica book. Both towns were incorporated in 1655, and in the 1650's they were both very large plantations. So, many people went to live there in the 1600's. When I first started learning more about the history of the 2 towns, I found out why people were hesitant to settle in Billerica. It was "all woods" and "rocks" and in general - not good land for developing a farm. There were only foot paths through the woods which were not even wide enough for farm animals. And the original Chelmsford plantation was based on the large Merrimack River and the smaller Concord River ran into it. And there was a lot of land - because of the rivers - could become farms. So, some very early settlers first came to Billerica, and changed their mind and moved over to Chelmsford. Another problem is that there were "rules" about how a town could come to exist. From memory, you had to have about 20 families living in the town, have a "meeting house," and have a Minister. The people in Billerica had a very hard time trying to find a Minister to live there, so it took longer for them to get the town incorporated. As fate (luck?) would have it, Chelmsford people found a Minister to move there right away, and he brought some of his congregation with him. (I haven't spent much time looking at the "history of Chelmsford," but the "history of Billerica" has many "stories." Like the time when the first bridge was being built across the Concord River. That was the time of "tolls" and, since Billerica people built the bridge, and, probably because they were closer to "Cambridge," they decided to charge Chelmsford people to cross the bridge - and get to Cambridge. There came a time when Chelmsford people refused to pay the "tolls." So, the Billerica men went out in the middle of the night - and took the bridge down.) :o) Both books are now on-line. And many "town histories" are now out on CD format; that is a much cheaper way to have these important books in your home. http://books.google.com/books?id=OVunB0IQ_EcC&dq=%22Billerica,+Massachusetts%22&printsec=frontcover&source=bll&ots=OwWS6-NIp_&sig=DDRQ-RCw1oXBE7D6lzEq6iTdTfk&hl=en&ei=BeLESa3iL57Itgfk-blD&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=11&ct=result http://books.google.com/books?id=WqZjPTcgpfIC&dq=%22Chelmsford,+Massachusetts%22&printsec=frontcover&source=bll&ots=x0wlIf_0a1&sig=mjata7oIojhx_Mj4Scl5SqlBQBk&hl=en&ei=MeLESca3O4WstgfO68SKAg&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=12&ct=result Betty (near Lowell, MA) (Some people think that the very first settlers in Billerica set up came on the shore of the historic Concord River. But the first settlers found the small Shawsheen River first, and a few families settled on that shore. Men had to walk a little farther to find the Concord River.) (There are several books on the historic Concord River.)

Hi everyone, I'm searching for my father's family and/or any records of them.? My father was born in Dudley, MA in 1911 and his birth certificate gives his name as Walentigo Dawicki.? However he always went by Chester Dawicki.? My grandfather, Marcel Dawicki, was in Dudley, MA in 1909.? I know this because I have a copy of him marriage certificate.? I don't know when he immigrated to the US.? I'm assuming sometime before 1909.? He is not listed as arriving at Ellis Island. On my grandfather's marriage? certificate, his name is listed as Marzel Duwicki, age 24, Birthplace Russia, Poland, father William Duwicki, mother Josie Klimuzieska.? He is listed as a Mill Operative. He married Rose Chorozewic, also of Russia, Poland and also a mill operative.? Her father's name was William Chorozewic, her mother's name was Rose Drezek. The only record of them that I can find of the family is the 1930 census where they lived in Norwich, CT with their children and the last name was spelled Dawawicki.? If anyone can help me locate documents or any information about the family, I would be very grateful. Thank you. Rose

Hello, In this morning's "MassMoment" e-mail, there is the story of a "great fire" which happened in Boston in - 1760. (Even ships were destroyed.) http://www.massmoments.org:80/moment.cfm?mid=86 We're heard of "great fires" in major cities before, but mostly in regards to the 1800's. It's not too often we hear of great fires in the 1700's. Margaret MacCormack, 25 yrs. old, daughter of Leo McCormack and Margaret MacDonald, lived at 159 Cabot Street in Boston, MA. Both were born in Boston, MA. in ca. 1893 and in ca. 1890 respectively. ( Note: This is the couple that I am researching. ). In the 1900 census in Boston, MA.: Leo McCormack: HOH; b. Aug., 1855; 44 yrs.; m. 12 yrs; b. Canada; parents b. Daniel J.: son; 17 yrs.; single; b. MA.; born ca. 1893. There is a birth record for Mary Emily McCormack on Nov. 20, 1890 in Boston, daughter of Leo and Margaret McCormack. Have not been able to locate birth records for Laura and Clara, their other daughters. There is a birth record for Daniel G. McCormack, son of Leo and Margaret McCormack...but where was he in the 1900 census? And when did Mary Emily become Margaret Ellen? If that wasn't enough, there was a Margaret Ellen McCormack, born July 23, 1890 in Boston, MA., daughter of Henry and Catherine McCormack, who seemed to drop off the face of the earth. But the family swears that Margaret Ellen McCormack was born ca. 1890 in Boston, MA. d/o Leo McCormack and Margaret MacDonald. And the marriage record for Margaret Ellen McCormack to Peter A. McPhee...the correct couple in the family...definitely has her as daughter of Leo McCormack and Margaret MacDonald. Why is there a birth record for Mary Emily McCormack, d/o Leo McCormack, but no birth record for Margaret Ellen, d/o Leo McCormack? Why are there no birth records for her sisters: Laura ( born May, 1892 in MA. ) and Clara ( born Jan. 1895 in MA.)? There is a birth record for Daniel Glover, son of Leo McCormack, born ca. 1893, but where was he in the 1900 census? In 1900, Leo and Margaret McCormack had 3 children, 3 living: Mary, Laura, and Clara. In 1910, Leo and Margaret had 3 children, 2 living ( hard to read ): Margaret E. and Daniel J. Can anyone shed any light on this McCormack family puzzle? Jean. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hello, I was at a store in Downtown Lowell today and walked by the old, now abandoned "Spanish church" on Merrimack Street. There are at least 2 buildings beside it, and probably attached to it. I've walked by the church many times, but this time I looked under a bush and saw a small plaque. It said, "The Gustavus Fox House." I couldn't read "the small print" but I believe he lived in the 1800's. When I got home, I looked on-line and found out he was an important man, and not only in Lowell. http://www.mrlincolnswhitehouse.org/inside.asp?ID=47&subjectID=2 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gustavus_Fox http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/pers-us/uspers-f/gv-fox.htm A quick look at census information shows him living in Lawrence, with a wife, Virginia. It is unlikely that he would have a child born in 1614 - his first known child was born 14-Jun-1633 [Weymouth VR 1:60]. John, son of Clement by his second wife, was likely born about 1647. Karen - It is not easy if done correctly, but can be very satisfying. The essential question for genealogical researchers is "How do I know if it is true?" Assertions concerning possible ancestors, whether found in print (books sometimes lie), online (the internet sometimes lies, too), or from family tradition (even family members err), should be considered in the light of whether or not citations from contemporary records are used to support those assertions. Some assertions cannot be directly supported by contemporary records, but are based upon well-reasoned arguments that in turn are based upon contemporary records. If you are not already doing so I would advise you to record the source(s) for each event. This is simple in most genealogical database programs which provide fields for source information, and some even provide a way to note the reliability of each source. In my database some books are rated as unreliable, because although they contain much information that can be proven correct by reference to contemporary records, they also contain much that can be proven incorrect with said records. On the same note, examples of what I consider to be very reliable sources, in order of their reliability, are: 1) Contemporary records - for example, I have seen the original register book where the City Clerk recorded deaths, including that of one of my great-grandmothers. 2) Certified copies of those records, such as a copy from the City Clerk's office of the record of great-grandma's death. 3) Other reliable copies of those records, such as annual copies of death records sent by the City Clerk's office to the state government. 4) Published transcriptions from contemporary records, such as the volumes of vital records through 1850 published for most Massachusetts cities and towns. 5) Well-documented secondary works which cite the source for each event, which allows me to examine those sources and personally verify the accuracy of each assertion. Examples of such works are the Silver Books for Mayflower families and the publications of the Great Migration Study Project. > I found it on line - it was Councilman's posting on Ancestry. I strongly suspect that when you dig into the matter you will find that no contemporary record, and no source that is based upon contemporary records, can be cited to support the assertion that Clement Briggs, fellmonger of Southwark, Surrey, England, and a passenger on the Fortune, had a father named John. If you do find contemporary records to back that assertion I would be most grateful if you could post that information here. Clement's son Clement married Hannah Packard, and the Packard family is a major focus of my genealogical research. Dale H. Cook, Member, NEHGS and MA Society of Mayflower Descendants; Plymouth Co.
