    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Ehrlacher Family
    2. David Howe
    3. Hello List, Is anyone researching the above family? I am most interested in the origins of one Fannie S. Ehrlacher, b. 1 Oct 1866, parents Martin and Catherine (Philbrook). Fannie m. William Alwyn Howe, date/place unkn. I have only found one child, Bertram C. Howe, b. 9 Aug 1886. I am interested in finding ancestral info on Fannie and her parents, also if Bertram had any siblings. I have searched the MA VR for the Ehrlacher family but came up empty. There are no Ehrlacher's in the Savage volumes. Dave

    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Nathan T. AMES in Springfield, Chicopee
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, I'm watching an "Antiques Roadshow" right now, and they are in TN for this show. They were just showing a set of "cannons" which are on display in Chatten.... One of the cannons was made in 1840's ? in Springfield, MA, by Nathan T. AMES. I just looked him up on-line and found a few sites mentioning him, and there are many more. http://www.armscollectors.com/mgs/2_ames_artillery_swords_pt__1.htm http://books.google.com/books?id=7sAbIf9j_8QC&pg=PA289&lpg=PA289&dq=%22Nathan+Ames+Springfield%22&source=bl&ots=BGri7jFn8X&sig=xJEQ9vksBVe3IMFSEc0WVoC2k7Y&hl=en&ei=dYfYSYLHA4PWlQeTrMzVDA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=2 http://newenglandtravels.blogspot.com/2009/03/ames-manufacturing-company-civil-war.html http://books.google.com/books?id=Eq2Dnj4sDZIC&pg=PA188&lpg=PA188&dq=%22Nathan+Ames+Springfield%22&source=bl&ots=sapDr8PBwI&sig=xmLzeRPZAkIyuacphZoadbs4KUU&hl=en&ei=dYfYSYLHA4PWlQeTrMzVDA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=8 http://www.civilwarartillery.com/manufacturers.htm http://books.google.com/books?id=x-jHvwHa0oAC&pg=PA234&lpg=PA234&dq=%22Nathan+T.+Ames,+Jr.%22&source=bl&ots=HKSIVW5zHg&sig=5ktycBDi15uNl3OCfQKR80HPkZE&hl=en&ei=TIvYSaigC6LtlQf8-v3BDA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1 *** I also found a few sites mentioning the AMES surname: http://john.rootsweb.ancestry.com/Ames/0768-l.html http://howardlanham.tripod.com/linkgr5/link200.html Here's an interesting Google / Book: http://books.google.com/books?id=MScDAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA112&lpg=PA112&dq=%22Nathan+T.+Ames,+Jr.%22&source=bl&ots=iA_Ks-PJkl&sig=XEmf5-qfKOPdF_Wmxr3iHS86y_E&hl=en&ei=TIvYSaigC6LtlQf8-v3BDA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=7 Betty (near Lowell, MA)

    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Genealogy in City of Lawrence
    2. Betty
    3. Hi Sister Therese, Out of curiousity, I went to the web site for the City of Lawrence to see how the City Clerk's office handles genealogy requests. It seems that a researcher has to go there in person, or hire someone to go there. http://www.ci.lawrence.ma.us/Pages/LawrenceMA_Clerk/geneology And there are 2 fees, one for looking at their Index and one for looking at the "registers." I guess this is another place where someone in MA could start a part-time job: Visiting city Clerk's offices and doing research - for a fee. (The other place would be the "Family & Probate Court" in Cambridge.) Perhaps someone on the Essex Co. List would be available to go to Lawrence City Hall. http://www.ci.lawrence.ma.us/Pages/index FYI site: http://www.lawrencehistory.org/ Betty (near Lowell, MA)

    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Elisha Smith 1776 Worcester to NH?
    2. Faye
    3. In the 1850 census for Tuftonboro NH there is an Elisha Smith, aged 74, born in Massachusetts and married to Sarah, aged 70. Next on the census is Isaac D Smith, my great great grandfather, his wife Mary (Chamberlin), their children Sarah and Mary, and nephew Charles Ayers (my great grandfather William was born the next year). I think Elisha is Isaac's father - and Elisha seems to have been there in 1840 as well. I got a lead that Elisha was born in Worcester in November 1776, son of Elisha and Persis Child(s). There appear to be 2 Elishas born 'about 1777' as there is also one on the 1850 census for Worcester. Does anyone know anything that might help? Both pages read as being collected in October so that seems to eliminate the idea that he lived in both places in different parts of the year and were counted twice.. If my Elisha was indeed born in Worcester I'd like to find out when he went north - and when he married Sarah and what her last name might be. She is my last unknown of that generation! Thanks in advance to anyone who can help! faye

    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Laura Houle Benoit
    2. Sister_Therese Gregoire
    3. Y'all are great ... one brick wall down! After years of searching, I've gotten several e-mails for the posting for Theophile (Teddy) Doucet earlier today. Now I've got an even older brick wall someone might help me with?? I've been searching about 13 years for this one. Looking for the date of death of LAURA HOULE BENOIT, daughter of Amedee Houle and Roseanna Doucet born 18 Mar 1887 in Quebec, and wife of Willie (?William) Benoit They were living in Lawrence, MA in the 1920 census. The birth of the last child was in 1923, and she is NOT in the 1930 census. Piecing that together with a few vague memories from my now-deceased mother, I suspect Laura died some time around 1927. If she's buried with other Houle relatives, then she'd be at Sacred Heart cemetery in Andover. I have no other clues. If I still had relatives in Lawrence who could go to a clerk's office or a cemetery, it would probably be easy. Any help appreciated. Thank you Sister Therese _________________________________________________________________ Windows Live™: Keep your life in sync. http://windowslive.com/explore?ocid=TXT_TAGLM_WL_allup_1a_explore_042009

Author: bbffrrpp Surnames: Durga, Dickey Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.massachusetts.unknown/6937.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Joan. DICKEY is not a common surname. A quick look at census information and there were only 110 people in MA in 1900. And the name doesn't show up until 1860. The surname, DURGA, is even less common. None in MA. It is mostly in Michigan and Connecticut, and about 6 other states. (First showing up in 1860.) The 1900 census has a Mrs. Jeannette DICKEY in Waltham as a widow. She has 3 children with her, age 29 to 16. The 1910 census has Orland DICKEY in Waltham, with his mother, Jennett, with him. (She is not in the Index.) His sister, Constance, and brother, Norman, are with him. I think it says that Jeannette had 4 children and 4 live. Orland is still there in 1920 with several relatives with him. (The closest I can come is a Clara DICKEY, bNY, but living in Lowell.) There are no DURGA people in MA. I checked the DERGA spelling and there was one man in MA 1900; a Portuguese name. There were 2 people in NY with the DURGA name, Otis and Louis in 1900. Oops. I just found the couple living in: DURGA, GRIFFIN (1900 U.S. Census) NEW JERSEY , UNION, 8-WD ELIZABETH Age: 30, Male, Race: WHITE, Born: MI Series: T623 Roll: 996 Page: 159 Caroline is there, and their young son, 2, and the name looks like Paris. They had been married for 9 years. I'm not finding either Griffin or Caroline DURGA in 1910 or 1920. But, I am finding this young man: DURGA, PAUL (1920 U.S. Census) MICHIGAN , WAYNE, 1-WD DETROIT Age: 22, Male, Race: WHITE, Born: NY Series: T625 Roll: 802 Page: 51 A lodger in a hotel or large rooming house. (The DERGA and DIRGA spellings seem to come from other countries.) I cannot find Griffin or Caroline in 1910 or 1920. That's all I can look up this morning.
