    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Thanks ... and another??
    2. Sister_Therese Gregoire
    3. Thanks - to Jane Lyman - my 15 year-old brick wall is solved. Now I have another, if it's not too much Onesime Gregoire, son of Paul Napoleon G. and Julie Morin, and his wife, Julie Guertin had a very large family. I've managed to find birth info on 13 of them in Canadian church records. The Canadian census records of 1881 indicate 3 children, that I haven't located, were born in the U.S. Mary and Ephrem, b. abt 1876 (possibly twins) Marie, abt 1878. The 1900 US census indicates one more, Arthur, born abt 1884 in MA. Onesime and Julie went back and forth, spending a few years in the US, going back to Canada, etc. They did this several times before finally settling in Manchester NH They lived for a short time in the 1870's in 2 Mass. towns I know of: Northhampton, MA and Haydenville, MA, and they had a number of relatives in Marlboro, MA Any help appreciated. 3. Y'all have been SO good at helping me knock over brick walls. This is another. One of my ancestors, Aurelie Gregoire, married Flavien Naud/Nault on 28 Jan 1868 at Grondines, Quebec. The last mention of him is in the birth of a child in March 1875 at St. Charles-des-Grondines. I've gone through the parish registers of Grondines (on the Mormon beta site) page by page from March of 1875 to June of 1880. It's a tedious task, but I was hoping to find his burial. There is no sign of him. By 1880, she is a widow. My hunch is that he died in Massachusetts since I find her living in Fall River MA in the 1880 census, with an 11-year old daughter, and listed as a widow running a boarding house, with several mill workers as boarders. I suspect she and Flavien went to work in the mills, and he may have died there. Nine months later, she is back in Quebec with her daughter, and 2 years later is remarried. Any help finding a date/place of death for Flavien will be greatly appreciated. 1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] The Lincoln families of the Town of Hingham, Mass. History - the town of Hingham
    2. Subject: Lincoln Family of Hingham, Mass. Source: History of the Town of Hingham, Mass. p.150 The name of Thomas Lincoln, cooper, appears in our records in 1636. His house lot was the same, which is now owned by his descendant, Martin Lincoln, Esq., at the corner of Lincoln and North streets. Thomas Lincoln had a son, Benjamin Lincoln, and a grandson, Benjamin; this Benjamin was the father of Colonel Benjamin Lincoln, who died March 1, 1771. Colonel Lincoln was the father of General Benjamin Lincoln, of the Revolutionary Army, and of Doctor Bela Lincoln, General Benjamin Lincoln's sons were Benjamin Lincoln, Esquire, Harvard University, 1777, Counsellor at Law, Boston, Mass. Theordore Lincoln, Harvard Univ. 1785 was of Dennysville, Maine and Martin Lincoln, Esq, of Hingham. The last mentioned Benjamin Lincoln married a daughter of James Otis. His sons were Dr. Benjamin Lincoln, Harvard Univ. 1806 who died at Demarara, a few years since and James Otis Lincoln, Esq., Harvard Univ. 1807, who died at Hingham, Mass. August 12, 1818. The name of Thomas Lincoln, Jr., miller, also appears on our records in 1636. He removed with his family to Taunton, Mass. before the year 1652, as appears by the Plymouth Colony Records. He made his Will at Taunton, Mass., in 1683, and in it mentions his age (80 years) and styles himself "grand senior". His children, and descendants were numerous, and from him, probably, descended all the persons of the name of Lincoln in Bristol County. Some of his descendants re- moved to Connecticut. The name of Thomas Lincoln, the husbandman, appears in our records in 1638. It is difficult to trace his descendants, although it may not be an impossibility. The singular fact, that four of the same name were among our early settlers, of whom three left numberous descendants p.151 HISTORY OF HINGHAM. and some of whom probably had children who had nearly arrived to manhood before they came to this country, causes no little embarrassment in perfecting their genealogy. Daniel Lincoln was "one of the young men" a few years after the settlement of the town; but I have not been able to ascertain of whhich Thomas Lincoln, he was the son. The descendants of Daniel Lincoln are numerous and widely scattered through the country. A full account of his descendants is in the possession of Jotham Lincoln, Esquire, Town Clerk of Hingham. The arrival of Stephen Lincoln to this country was, according to Cushing's MSS, in 1638. His record is as follows: "1638, Steven Lincoln and his wife, and his son, Steven, came from Windham, and settled in New Hingham." The first Stepehn Lingoln had but one son, and three grandsons, viz.: Stephen Lincoln (a bachelor) David and James. The sons of David Lincoln were David, Matthew and Isaac Lincoln, Harvard Univ. 1722. The sons of the second David Lincoln, were, David and Nathan Lincoln David died February 1, 1814 aged 79 yrs. Nathan Lincoln died Dec. 19, 1809 aged 71 yrs. The sons of David were the following: Deacon David Lincoln, who died August, 1825 aged 58 yrs., Hawkes Lincoln, Perez Lincoln, Harvard Univ. 1798, died Aug 3, 1805; Noah and Ensign. The only son of Nathan was the late Abner Lincoln, Esq. The sons of Matthew Lincoln were: Stephen, Noah, Job, Matthes, Levi and Isaiah Lincoln. Stephen's sosn were Calvin, Stephen, Elisha: Calvin was the father of Calvin Lincoln, Harvard Univ. 1820. Matthew Lincoln had several sons. Those now residing in Hingham wer Jedidah Lincoln and Hezekiah Lincoln. The only son of Levi Lincoln was Dr. Levi Lincoln, Harvard Univ. 1789. The sons of Job Lincoln were Mitchel Lincoln and Bradford Lincoln of Boston, Mass. etc. p.152 - History of the Town of Hingham, Mass. The sons of Isaac Lincoln, Harvard Univ. 1722, were Isaac, James, Nathaniel and Heman Lincoln. Isaac Lincoln, the father of Daniel; James Lincoln, the father of Perez Lincoln; Nathaniel Lincoln, the father of the late Captain Luther Lincoln (father of Luther B. Lincoln, Harvard Univ., 1822) Bela Lincoln, Robert Lincoln, Martin Lincoln of Ohio; Heman Lincoln, the father of the Hon. Heman Lincoln of Boston, and of Pyam Lincoln. The longevity of this family has been generally remarkable. For instance, the following ages: Isaiah Lincoln died April 1, 1786 aged 42 years. Noah Lincoln died November 13, 1810 aged 82 years. Stephen Lincoln died November 8, 1816, aged 91 years. Job Lincoln died May 17, 1818, aged 85 years. Levi Lincoln died May 12, 1819, aged 81 years. Matthew Lincoln died Dec 18, 1821 aged 87 years. The ancestors of this aged family also to an advanced age. The preceding sketch of the Lincoln families probably embraces all the heads of families among the early settlers. There may be ommissions in the name of their descendants; it is not pretended to be perfectly full, but is probably accurate as far as it extends. For the account of the descendants of Stephen Lincoln, I am indebted to Jedidiah Lincoln, Esquire, ond of his descendants. Isaiah Linconl was killed by an accident and should not be considered in the statement. 1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Lucy LARCOM, "Mill Girl" in Lowell
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, In this morning's "MassMoments" e-mail, there is a story about the "mill girl" from Lowell, Lucy LARCOM. http://www.massmoments.org:80/moment.cfm?mid=116 It's a good time to remind people that, if you are going to be visiting in Boston this weekend, a trip to Lowell might be a nice "day trip." http://www.nps.gov/lowe/ http://www.lowellma.gov/community/historicpark http://www.mass.gov/dcr/parks/northeast/llhp.htm Betty (near Lowell, MA) FYI: Maybe 10 years ago, I took rides on the "Boston to Lowell Commuter Rail" trains more often. One day I took a ride into Lowell and got off in the train station there, and noticed a woman who looked puzzled. She wanted to know how to get to "Lowell National Historic Park." I had some free time that day and decided to accompany her to the Visitors Center. In the process I found out that she was a resident of the State of Hawaii and she was in MA on vacation and visiting friends. Her friends were working, so she decided to get on the train and come to Lowell. I asked her, coming from the "beautiful islands," why was she interested in "the mills?" I don't remember her exact response, but she had an interest in "history." A few weeks later I received a box of "Macadamia nuts" in the mail. :o)

    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Hoping to find 1774 birth record....maybe Worcester County?
    2. Peter & Janice Lodge
    3. Hoping to locate the birth record of Rodolphus Read (Reed, Reade etc), this is a "brickwall" for me.    Info to date says Rodolphus Reed was born May 1774, or 1773, research suggests it may have been in Worcester County MA ~ maybe Sutton or one of the nearby towns. His father was Josiah Reed, mother seems to have been Hannah.......also no marriage has yet been found for Josiah Reed and Hannah but Rodolphus was their eldest child.   The information in the book the Reed Family in Europe and America by Jacob Whittemore Reed is not correct, Rodolphus Reed is not the son of Josiah Reed and Elizabeth (Taylor)  who lived at Douglas MA.    Thanks, really appreciate help, Janice

    3. Greetings, I've been working with my spreadsheet so long now, that I didn't even think to make the Barnstable to Hampden, Hampshire to Plymouth, and Suffolk to Worcester clear. > 42 Birth 1850 Barnstable Hampden > 43 Birth 1850 Hampshire Plymouth > 44 Birth 1850 Suffolk Worcester Barnstable to Hampden, in this case means it includes the counties: Barnstable, Berkshire, Bristol, Dukes, Essex, Franklin, and Hampden. Hampshire to Plymouth, means it includes Hampshire, Middlesex, Nantucket, Norfolk, and Plymouth. Obviously, the last volume only includes Suffolk and Worcester. As you have seen from the list, the last county in the first volume for a year fluctuates and correspondingly the first county of the second volume changes. Things really change in 1899, when Suffolk gets its own volume and Worcester moves in with Nantucket, Norfolk, and Plymouth. Then, another big switch comes in 1903 when the death records switch to by town name with no consideration of county, and low volume numbers. All images (births, marriages, deaths) starting in 1903 have to have the year match the volume and page number for it to be viewable. Part of my check of a volume is for a valid entry with an earlier year that needs a special image number to be viewable. If you happen to spot one, please let me know, so a second image file can be created and the image for that specific entry is viewable. Don't be surprised to find that it is just a scanning error. I've gone through three post-1902 volumes so far, and only found one with a prior year that needed a separate image. Sue Richart My goal since November has been to make a thousand corrections a week. The fact that I have succeeded in doing so, only means that the phrase "They're everywhere, they're everywhere" still applies to errors in the database.>g

    1. Re: [GENMASSACHUSETTS] [MAESSEX] Mass Vital Records 1841-1915 volumes part 1
    2. Sue Richart
    3. Patricia, I use the spreadsheet to hunt for problems with the database. First, I'm looking for any of the other types (birth or deaths when it is supposed to be marriages for example) listed under a volume. Then, checking for entries for the volume outside of the five year period, both before and after. Finally, then I'm looking for entries for counties not associated with the volume. You folks are needed to help find the issues with images, names, and pages. I have been fixing some of those all along, but the more you report the better. Errors in volume or year usually come in 100 to 500 entry increments. I've been trying to made a big dent in those, but seemingly every time I go through all the entries on an index page, there are still more. I'm hoping to get the errors down to just name and page numbers. Once done with these, I'll go back to requesting a spreadsheet per volume, which hopefully will catch most of the rest of the errors. Just don't ask me when that will be, my crystal ball doesn't see out that far.>g Just a reminder, if you spot a problem with a name, please email me, John, or Dale. If the name in the index is in error and it occasionally is, Sam Sturgis, database webmaster, will add a correct entry. He just can't remove an incorrect name for an entry. I would appreciate it, that if you have seen improvement in the database, that you take the time to email the webmaster at webmaster@nehgs.org to let them know their effort is appreciated. I am definitely seeing the improvement as I go through the database and, hopefully, you do also. 1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Simeon CROSBY, b1761 Billerica - Soldier ??
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, One of my ancestors was Simeon CROSBY, born 1761 in Billerica.* In April 1775, he would have been just turning 14. I have never read anywhere whether he fought in the Revolutionary War. Does anyone know if there is a way for me to find out? It was in 2007 that I spent a month looking into this man, and I found out that researchers had him as a son with a family in Shrewsbury, MA - that was the wrong family. I cannot prove it, but I believe he was the son of Jessaniah CROSBY of Billerica, MA. The "vital records" only say Jessaniah's youngest child was "a son" b1761. I just checked the Billerica book, and Jessaniah died in 1774, and several of his older sons went north to NH. There is no mention of these men "serving." I just checked the chapter, "The Revolution," and there is a list of ".. Soldiers from Billerica in the Revolutionary War." There are 8 CROSBY's mentioned, including a Simon. But, there were many descendants of the "Simon CROSBY of 1600's Billerica" with the name, Simon. So, I don't know which if he was Simeon. My Simeon CROSBY married in Cambridge or West Cambridge, MA, in 1787 to Lydia Harrington FROST. There is no way of my finding out when Simeon moved to Cambridge or West Cambridge. Possibly it was between 1781 and 1784. Speaking of FROST, my sister just reminded me that 2 FROST brothers from West Cambridge (now Arlington) fought in the War: Ephraim and Samuel - from West Cambridge. (These families are discussed in the "history of Arlington.") (I just looked in that book and Simeon is only very briefly mentioned.) (Lydia H. FROST was born 1766 to Samuel FROST and Abigail CUTTER. Their siblings were: Ephraim FROST and Mary CUTTER. I am descended from both.) For people in New England, have a pleasant holiday weekend ! Betty (near Lowell, MA)
