I agree. And, it was not always the man in the woman's life. I've read stories about the parents of a girl -- who didn't like their daughter's lifestyle. And, wasn't it President Lincoln's son who committed his mother to a "home" of some sort? And, daughters have been known to do similar things. And, there are "people with mental-health issues" who can accuse "healthy people" with bad things. And, don't forget the story which came out within the last 10 years of the woman who was in, I think, Danvers State Hospital for most of her life. I think it was a nurse who discovered the lady was deaf. She didn't have a "mental health" problem, she just couldn't hear anyone. And there were probably man teen-age boys, who became unruly and their parents had them committed -- because they didn't know what else to do. My great-uncle had a brother who was sent to a Reform School near Lowell, MA, as a "teen-ager" ~1918. His father had returned to northern Maine, so his mother was then a single-parent in MA during WW I years. And, he might have been just a teen-age boy who didn't want to go to school. But, the 1920 census still had him at that Reform School. Betty (near Lowell, MA) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Her husband was very greedy and wanted all that she had but didn't want to divorce her. Instead he had her committed to Danvers State Mental Hospital where she stayed for about 20 years until she died. He had claim to everything all them years just because he had her committed as insane. Any husband, father or doctor could have any woman committed just by signing a paper. No proof was needed. The list goes on but to keep from boring you I will just give you the examples above. Probably about 60% of the people in mental hospitals were not mental but had a man in there life that had them put there. 3. I have been researching Hattstatt-Hatstat lines for many years now but I do not think I have all the information there is to be had about this line. Is there someone who lives close by the NEHGS who might be willing to spend some time looking for this name in their records--especially Soldiers and Sailors--MA,ME, NH,CT??? I am trying to sort our the family groups especially of the many "Georges" who were named after Georg Zacharias Hattstatt --the Hessian trooper-- through a few generations. He had 13 children in the USA. Some of these have been traced to present generations but others are still missing. All info reguarding the name Hatstat would be welcome as there is a book being planed to record this history. All who are Hatstat's or related to them are welcome to contact me and contribute information to be included in the book project. Thank you for your consideration. Jo Ann Hatstat---jo@vermontel.net

Author: bbffrrpp Surnames: Lamb Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.massachusetts.unknown/6945.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Carol. Because "fits" are mentioned, that makes me wonder whether the boy had Epilepsy. And, if he had the "seizures" on a regular basis, he wouldn't have been allowed to go to school. So, he might not have learned to "read and write," etc. And, Epilepsy can be fatal. One of my cousins developed Epilepsy shortly after birth, and he had "grand-mal seizures" for most of his childhood. He went to Children's Hospital in Boston for treatments, but they put him on all kinds of drugs. For both reasons, he was put in a "special" class, but did not do well. When he was approaching 30, his parents moved outside of Boston, and they found a new doctor. This doctor took away most of the drugs and put him on only a few of the important ones. The seizures were stopped. For the first time in his life, he was able to get a job, drive a car, and "date." But, someone with Epilepsy in the 1800's would not have been treated as well. Actually, I just remembered that my (now) husband had a great-uncle in Cambridge who had Epilepsy. He died in 1950's (?) because of it. During the 1800's there were probably "hundreds" of reasons why a person would be "placed" in an asylum. 2. usually the census would indicate status as Patient/ Inmate or employee. Depends on the enumerator but usually you can tell the difference. all listed as individuals with a line of info for each, age, sex, where born etc. as the particular census year required.

Their older son, James H. Lamb (Jr.), apparently had some sort of mental problem. He was born about 1846 in Mass. but I have been unable to find a birth or death record for him (or a birth record for his older sister Ella Sophronia Lamb). 1850 census and 1855 Mass. census: can't find the family. 1860 census (Framingham): father listed as Harrison Lamb, farm labor. Son James age 14, described as "fits, insane." 1865 Mass. census (Holliston): father listed as James H, cordwainer. Son James H. Jr. age 20, invalid. 1870 census (Holliston): father James H. works for boot factory. Son James H. age 25, no occupation, "idiotic." 1880 census: the family had moved to Cleveland, Ohio. Son James H. was not with them. Maybe son James was placed in a mental asylum after 1870. However, I cannot find a later census record or a death record for him in either Mass. or Ohio. I don't have time to find out how many pages here list all the "Patients" that year. But, browsing through them will show all the ages. ALSO, Adelaide had given births in 1876 and 1878, and we will never know what her problem was. But, nowadays, we could say she "might" have had "Post-Partum Depression." Betty (near Lowell, MA) ALSO, Maybe 5 years ago I found out about a family-history book written by a man in Chelmsford. It's a large book about the PATIENCE family which lived in the Connecticut River Valley. I didn't read the book cover to cover, but I read several of the stories. One was about a lady who never married, and she lived with several family members during her younger adult years. But, when she got older, she decided she didn't want to live with them any longer. I don't believe she worked, so she didn't have an income. So, somehow she ended up in a facility (state hospital?), where she spent the rest of her life. She did not have a medical reason to live there; it was her choice. She was not "IN" a building; she roamed the grounds when she wanted to. AND, don't forget all the "women problems" which sent women to hospitals. Many husbands found ways to "admit" their unwanted wives to those hospitals / asylums. I even found out about a case in the 1980's. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The Remonds settled in Salem, where they built successful catering, provisioning, and hairdressing businesses. and Although they were prosperous free citizens of Massachusetts and protective parents, they could not shield their eight children from racial discrimination. The family set great store by education, and in 1835, Sarah and her sister passed the examination to enter Salem High School. Within a week,a segregationist school committee forced them to leave the school. Outraged, the Remonds moved to Newport, RI, where Sarah attended a private school for blacks. I know someone with the REDMOND name, and I'm curious whether REMOND are sometimes mixed up in records. ..... Since the "theater" in Boston is mentioned, I could ask how many had an ancestor who was some type of entertainer in Boston. I could mention 2 stores. My mother had an aunt who married Hobart PHELPS and they lived in Lexington. I was reminded a few years ago that Uncle Hobart was an "entertainer." He was some type of "impersonator" in Scollay Square. (Aunt Ruby was a seamstress, and she made the bridesmaids gowns for my wedding. She and her older sister both lived long lives.) And, my grandmother, the twice-orphaned girl, was told many "family stories" which turn out to be many "family lies." When she was reportedly "found" on the streets of Boston in Feb. 1889, she was taken to a hospital. And she was told the nurses gave her the name, Daisy WATROUS. And, she was told that that was the name for a well-known entertainer in Boston at the time. 4-5 yrs. ago I wrote to the Boston Public Library. The Reference Dept. checked all their books of "entertainers," and that name did not appear in any of them. (Since when do nurses give a baby .. a surname?) :o( (In 1892 at her adoption her name was officially changed from Daisy WATROUS to Mary Anna Clark DEXTER. She had just turned 3. We knew that she had nicknames, like "May" or "Mamie," but I never heard her mention a possible nickname of Daisy.) (This name-change is in a book.) (Long, complicated story in archives of MA and CT Lists.) What I am really looking for is an uncle who was born with Downs Syndrome and died as a young child. Back then it was a disgrace to have a child that was different and doctors insisted that they be put into an institution. I can find no records of birth, institution, or death. Everyone in the family has now passed on except for one uncle who denies anything that has to do with the family secrets. There is a family cemetery plot but either he is not buried there or he is not registered as being buried there. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I think I may have to go to Boston to get this death record. I've spent many hours at the Archives, but not at the other building. I've heard it is somewhat difficult to work there. Can someone please tell me how this place works? Is it actually part of Bay State Convention center, or just close to it? Is there a parking lot? Where is it located? I'll use my GPS to find the address, but any tips appreciated. I'm not good at driving in Boston! Thanks. 1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] census listings as inmate
    2. Joan Norstedt
    3. Do we know if these folks listed as inmates were actually mentally unstable? I realize some were workers in these hospitals, so, were they listed differently than the ones who were actually "incarcerated?"
