    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Ayer, MA, Cemetery / Fort Devens
    2. Ray
    3. I was born at Ft Devens Army Hospital in 1952. Dad was a 2LT in the Coast Artillery. My dad wanted Mom to drive down to Cape Cod so I could be a real Cape Codder like my Grandpa but she wasn't having any of it. My birth certificate is from Shirley because Devens kind of straddles the line between the towns and the hospital was evidently on the Shirley side.

    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Congresswoman Edith Nourse ROGERS (NOURSE)
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, Someone on my "Memories" List has mentioned that the former Congresswoman Edith Nourse ROGERS was responsible for the establishment of "Fort Devens" in place of "Camp Devens" in MA. When reading a brief biography, I found out what an important woman she was. Even though her name appears in MA, she was born in Saco, Maine: http://www.fortdevensmuseum.org/EdithNourseRogers.htm Mrs. ROGERS must have been a very important citizen, as the "VA hospital" in Bedford, MA, is also named after her: http://www.bedford.va.gov/ According to the sites below, she was the daughter of Franklin T. NOURSE and Edith France RIVERSMITH of Saco. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edith_Nourse_Rogers http://bioguide.congress.gov/scripts/biodisplay.pl?index=r000392 http://www.greatwomen.org/women.php?action=viewone&id=127 (Congresswoman ROGERS must have been serving when my aunt became a WAC. My aunt had a brief marriage ~1940, and in 1942, would have been Mrs. Louise (LEWIS) GARLAND, when she signed up to become a nurse during the War.) Just an FYI for you. Betty (near Lowell, MA)

    3. Hello, I just went to find the web site for the library in Pepperell, and, when I found it, I saw that it has a "history & genealogy room." But the page for that includes a list of the surnames where people have sumitted a "family-history report." http://www.lawrencelibrary.org/generalinfo/historyandgenealogy.htm http://www.lawrencelibrary.org/generalinfo/artgallery.htm (There will be a model-train exhibit next week !) http://www.town.pepperell.ma.us/ http://www.town.pepperell.ma.us/historical/PepperellHistory.html That page mentions the "history of Middlesex County." I wonder how many of you have looked at that book (series of books?). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pepperell,_Massachusetts Just an FYI for you. Betty (near Lowell, MA) (A good "Sunday drive" for someone in the area is to drive on Rt. 119 from Littleton to Ashby - where you drive through Groton, Pepperell, and Townsend, also. "Farm stands" are there for you to enjoy, and a State Park, and some -- farms !)

Author: bbffrrpp Surnames: Roy, Smith Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.massachusetts.unknown/6962.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Thomas. I have the same type of genealogy problem. My grandmother was reportedly a foundling in Boston in Feb. 1889, and the "family story" goes that the nurses gave her the name, Daisy WATROUS, at the hospital. In Mar. 1892, she was adopted by an older couple, and they changed her name to Mary Anna Clark DEXTER (for the adoptive mother's maiden name). Because 100 years had passed, I was able to apply to have her Adoption File opened ~5 yrs. ago. Unfortunately, there were only 3 papers in the file and very little information - which was mostly "lies." But, it did confirm the name change. There is a book of "Name Changes for Middlesex County up to 1892," and my grandmother's name is in it. Perhaps someone can say whether there is a similar book for Essex County. My suggestion for this morning is to try to find the Adoption Record - probably in Essex County, MA. Or, if you know where the "foundling home" was located, you could try to find out more about that. (My grandmother was reportedly taken to a hospital when they "found" her, and then taken to what we would call a "foster home" where she would have been called a "foster child." (MA has "NO" records on this.) I think if you concentrate on a possible birth in 1878 in Essex County, and post queries about that, you might receive more hints. Betty (near Lowell, MA) (Note: For my grandmother, I believe that the Adoptive couple was her maternal grandparents (from CT). My "educated guess" is that their married daughter in CT had a pregnancy outside of her marriage in the "summer of 1888.) (Your Catherine SMITH / Clara ROY was born ~10 yrs. before that, so you should be able to get her Adoption File opened - IF she was formally adopted.) 3. Betty While I didn't have a relative who lived on Hanscom Field, my uncle worked there many many years. He was a graduate of M.I.T., a reservist in the Marines, and his work was fairly secretive but had something to do with radar. I don't know for sure when he started working there, sometime after WWII as he had been one of those Marines who fought in the South Pacific and was getting ready to head for Japan when the A-Bomb was dropped. He survived Pelilu so I am really glad he didn't have to take on the beach landings on Japan - from what I've heard that could have been a Pacific version of the Normandy invasion! faye ---- Betty <bbffrrpp@comcast.net> wrote: > Hi again, > > When I went to find a brief history of Ayer, MA, I found something on the > bottom of this page which might interest someone. 1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Ayer, MA, Cemetery / Fort Devens
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, I am interested in the cemeteries in the small Town of Ayer (MA), and the 2 cemeteries I have visited turn out to be not municipal cemeteries. Town Hall has said that the 2 cemeteries across the street from each other are controlled by 2 different churches. One is by St. Mary's, and, if I understood correctly, the "Woodlawn Cemetery" where a HUTCHINSON is born is run by a "federated? church." I was wondering if anyone knew more information about this. I just looked for a brief history of Ayer, and found out that up until ~1870, it was part of Groton. So, it seems that people living in Groton, but in the part which became Ayer, might be buried in Groton. (There are no municipal cemeteries in Ayer.) FYI: Ayer's history dates back to 1667 when the first mill, used to grind corn in the agricultural community, was built. Originally part of the town of Groton, Ayer was incorporated in 1871 and named in honor of Dr. James Cook Ayer, a prominent resident of Lowell who provided the funding for the construction of Town Hall (1873-76). The Town's growth was influenced by a period of rapid development of railroad transportation during the mid 19th century. Though only 9.5 square miles in area the Town became a major junction for both east-west and north-south rail lines, and developed into an important commercial center. During the Civil War an army training camp, Camp Stevens, was located near the Nashua River. Camp Devens, which eventually became Fort Devens, was established at the onset of World War I. The presence of thousands of military and civilian personnel on the base shifted Ayer's commercial development towards meeting their needs until Fort Devens was closed in 1994. http://www.ayer.ma.us/index.html Ayer is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. Originally part of Groton, it was incorporated in 1871 and became a major commercial railroad junction. The town was home to Fort Devens, an army camp established in the Civil War, until its closure in 1994. The population was 7,287 at the 2000 census. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ayer,_Massachusetts ... As you see, the history of "Fort Devens" in MA is also a history of Ayer. I didn't realize that "Camp Devens" was initially an "Army training camp" during the Civil War ! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Devens,_Massachusetts How many have a parent or grandparent, etc., who lived at "Fort Devens?" (Now no longer an Army facility, I believe.) Betty (near Lowell, MA)

The census has them living with stepfather Joseph Carpenter and mother Clara in Central Falls, Providence, Rhode Island. census records has mother Clara stating place of birth as Canada. For Priscilla and Blanche Roy it shows father's place of birth to be Conn. and mother Canada. All that is listed for place of birth of the sisters is Mass. No counties. Priscilla was born about 1911 and Blanche about 1913. I think she first married a Roy, then a Henault, and last Carpenter. I found court records for a name change on Mother Clara. She was originally given the name of Catherine Smith at the foundling home and year of birth give to be about 1878. She was adopted at age 4 and her name was changed to Clara Marie Hamilton on July 3, 1882 in Essex County, Mass. Clara is a dead end line.
