    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Dick Eastman's Talk in Chelmsford
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, I'd like to mention that I was able to get to the meeting of the Chelmsford Genealogy Club on Tuesday night, and I was able to meet Dick Eastman. (I had e-mailed with him when he used to live in Billerica.) He gave a very good talk about how you can use Google to help you with your research. I use Google every day, many times a day, so I was familiar with the site. But, he discussed the "Advanced Features" on the site and I was not familiar with them. One very helpful hint is that you can limit your "search" to only words in a URL, or only words in the text, etc. If you go to the "first page," and click on "Advanced Search," you will go to this page: http://www.google.com/advanced_search?hl=en If you scroll down to where you find: + Date, Usage Rights, etc., you will find many of the things Dick talked about. Use the "menu" for each item. It will show you how to type in your Google "search box" - for example - InURL: Wilkins Family. Dick said that everything he was talking about can be found on-line. And, probably everything can be found in the archives of his web site: www.eogn.com At the end of his talk he said there was a new book which is now out in book stores: "Google for Your Family Tree." He recommends it. http://www.googleyourfamilytree.com/ It is a regularly priced book, and it is fairly new, so it might not be in your local library, yet. By the way, a volunteer was "taping" the event. So, the "talk" might be showing up on the "local cable TV" in Chelmsford. http://www.chelmsfordtv.org/ This page on that site reminds me of something I've been meaning to mention: The History Show US veterans from WWII, Korea, Vietnam and other conflicts tell their stories as part of the Library of Congress' Veterans' History Project. Producer: Dean Contover, CTM http://www.chelmsfordtv.org/ctmprograms.php I don't know how long it takes to get shows on TV. This "TV listings" page reminds me of a local show which I use to watch in the past: "The Writers." It offers interviews with "local authors." I haven't watched it in a long time, and I'll have to start watching it again. Maybe 4-5 years ago I saw a local author being interviewed about his family-history book on his PATIENCE family. I borrowed the book from the library, and it was a thick book - full of information. His family was originally based in the Connecticut River Valley (MA). Have a pleasant weekend ! Get your gardens going ! I've read that "community gardens" are coming back in style. And, don't forget to stop at a "farm stand" while you are driving around this month. (And take a picnic cooler in the car with you - to store your fruits and veggies in.) :o) Betty (near Lowell, MA) P.S. There are shows about the "Big Band era" on public television this week, and I've been reminded of a lot of songs from the early 1900's - which included: Just give me a June night The moonlight and you and: http://www.redhotjazz.com/bigbandessay.html

    3. In 1696 Paul Healey, born April 3, 1664 in Cambridge Mass, married Elizabeth Smith, supposedly of New Hampshire, in Rehoboth, Bristol, Mass. Would someone be able to look these folks up and see what might be written about Elizabeth? If she was born in New Hampshire, where, and if not, where.. and who her parents might be? The Ancestry hints have them being from England and then living near the cape - seems New Hampshire a bit out of the way.. thanks in advance faye

    2. Betty
    3. Hi Joanne, The only child of an adoption on my family-tree that I research was my grandmother, and that was in 1892 in Boston. So, I don't know about adoptions after 1900. But, perhaps there is a place on the web site where there is "contact information." But just a reminder that the "Catholic Church" in MA has been having "financial troubles," and might not offer much help with genealogy questions. http://www.ccab.org/ The Lowell office of this organization was closed for a year or two - because of financial problems, but I think it reopened recently. (I hope I'm remembering the news stories correctly.) Betty (near Lowell, MA) FYI: I knew a young woman in Greater Boston who "got pregnant" and this was the 1960's. Her parents "insisted" that she fly out to CA to live with an aunt and uncle for a year. Her baby was born and immediately put up for adoption. The lady came back to MA and it became a "family secret." I had known this lady during the 1950's and up to early 60's, and didn't see her again until the late 1980's. She confided in me - this story. I asked her whether she wanted to try to find her son. She said, "No !" This lady had "mental health issues," so I couldn't try to change her mind. And then she died unexpectedly 2 years ago. All this time I have wished that I could provide information to that "child put up for adoption ~1965 in CA," but it would be impossible for me - as an outsider to the situation. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Calhoun Joanne" <joannecalhoun@yahoo.com> To: <Genmassachusetts@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, June 01, 2009 4:24 PM Subject: [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Adoptions through Catholic Charities > > Has anyone had any experience trying to find information on an adoption > through Catholic Charities in abt. 1955 in Boston? 1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Child in Records only as "son" or "daughter"
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, One of the things that Sue mentioned this morning is that some early records only have a child of a couple written down as "a son" or "a daughter." I found this last year when trying to find the correct parents of my ancestor, Simeon CROSBY. He had married Lydia Harrington FROST in Cambridge. Other researchers had his parents as a couple from Billerica but who had moved to the Worcester area and had their son, Simon, there. I didn't think this was correct, so last year I took 2 weeks trying to find better information. Because the patriarch was Simon CROSBY, and one of his sons was a Simon CROSBY (Billerica), there were many sons born in the 1600's/1700's, named Simon. So, I tried eliminating them and couldn't find the one which fit the man marrying in Cambridge. With a researcher's help, I discovered that Jessaniah CROSBY in Billerica had a son born in the correct timeframe. But, the record only had him having "a son." Betty (near Lowell, MA) (I posted this story last year, so you can check the archives for more details.) Remember to check the archives of all the Lists and Boards for your surnames and place-names. And, please remember to check the on-line auctions for for your surnames and place-names.
