    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] HILL families in early Billerica
    2. Betty
    3. Hi William, I have the "history of Billerica," and I just checked and there are 5 pages in the genealogy section on the HILL name. I can only offer some information right now. I can offer more later in the day. Jonathan, son of Jonathan, 4, b1669, m. 1698-0 to Mary BRACKET. They had Mary, Jonathan, Peter, Elizabeth, Esther, Joseph, and Bethyah. Elizabeth, b1711 married Francis KIDDER. Jonathan, son of Joseph, 8, b1718, m. 1746 Mary LANE. He m. 1774, Sarah WHITING, widow of Samuel, 10. They had Ralph, Mary, Martha, Susanna, Benjamin, Job, Lucy, Josiah, Elizabeth, Isabel, Jonathan, Jane, Asubah, Anna. (only youngest child born to Jonathan and Sarah) Lucy, b1756, m. 1814, Isaac TAYLOR of Dunstable. The "history of Billerica" is now on-line, I think at HeritageQuest. And, for new researchers, just a reminder that there are now "thousands" of history and genealogy books now on-line. They are at Google Books or HeritageQuest Books (through your library). And, there are a great many history and genealogy books being sold on-line -- in many ways. Betty (near Lowell, MA) Remember to check the archives of all the Lists and Boards for your surnames and place-names. And, please remember to check the on-line auctions for for your surnames and place-names.

    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Nelson YOUNG, Huldah KIDDER
    2. Betty
    3. Hi Charles, I have the "KIDDER book" on CD but it is not searchable and I have no Index. So, finding a female KIDDER is very difficult - unless I have specific information about her. The "KIDDER book" is on-line -- I think at HeritageQuest, and I think it is searchable there. The quickest way is to contact George KIDDER in FL. He has been updating the 1941 book for many years, and has it all on his computer. So, if you e-mail him, he can probably give you information. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/1255/1255.htm Also, there is a KIDDER List. It used to be very active. It has not been very active for a few years, but you can check the archives. There is also a KIDDER Board. (And don't forget Boards at www.genforum.com ) Betty (near Lowell, MA) (George is working on getting his web site moved to another site.)

    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] MA Vital records computer crash
    2. Jan
    3. On Sat., John Slaughter wrote to the people on the MA-VitalRecords message board about his computer crash but I don't know that the other MA boards heard about the crash (judging from some of the messages I saw). We have "taken up a collection" which means you can click on the vital records URL http://www.ma-vitalrecords.org/ and send a donation to help John with the expenses of retrieving the vital information that was lost. When John was asked how much money he would need, here's what he wrote on Sunday: Good morning, everyone. First, I want to thank all of you for your thoughts and the donations that have already come in to the PayPal account. I'll try to answer all of the questions and suggestions that have come up. THE PROBLEM: The crash is a mechanical crash. It sounds like the spindle motor went out. This is not my C: drive. So, I still have my operating system and internet access. The crashed drive has a number of things on it, such as all of our personal genealogies, the vital records project, my programs for managing the project and some software that I opted to install on that drive rather than the C: drive. A mechanical problem precludes using software to recover the data at the home level. I have begun checking into the costs. The minimum I've found is $259 just for the recovery. There is one company that offers a flat rate of $399 plus the new drive. If I can get a replacement drive for less than their cost, I can save a little money that way. Using them would put the basic recovery cost at around $500. BACKUPS: A few of you have mentioned using online backups. That is a possibility. Another option is go use a method that I did years ago when I worked as a computer operator in a commercial company. Every night I'd run backups of all the files that changed that day. Weekly backups were made for anything that changed during the week. Monthly backups of the entire system were made. Copies of the tapes, yes, tapes like you've seen in old movies, were made of the weekly and monthly backups and those tapes went to a safe deposit box at the bank. What I can do is get two external drives. One will replace the bad drive and the second will be used to make backups just as I did in the past. We have a fire proof safe that the backup drive will be kept in except when in use. Jodi and I were talking about getting the programs set so that she can use them. At the present, they are not compiled into a computer runnable form. This will also be a backup system. If something were to happen to me, or my computer, she would be able to carry on the project. Right now, she is really busy with her RN studies. She is currently taking a chemistry class and it is very difficult. She has two tests this week. DONATIONS: For those who don't use PayPal, you can send your donations to me at: John Slaughter 5441 W Delaware St Spirit Lake, ID 83869 My phone number is (208) 623-2433 All donations received above what is needed to resolve this situation will go to making the project better, as they always have. My web host has offered an upgrade to unlimited storage and unlimited bandwidth. There are some towns that I will have to go to the library to copy. Especially Boston. A LITTLE BACKGROUND: For those who may not know, Jodi and I don't live anywhere near each other. She is in New Hampshire and I'm in Idaho. The two of us, with the help of our transcribers, put all of these online. I do the technical and she handles transcription management. We have discussed asking for a third volunteer that can help take some of the load off of Jodi. In some ways, she does more than I do. The project began over 10 years ago when I decided to put the Ipswich VRs online. We now have over 150 towns completely transcribed or in progress. There are almost a million and a half records that are transcribed. Even more are accessible via the images. The majority also have the images of the pages. We are working to get all images that are available to us. It is our firm hope to continue well beyond the published records. Perhaps to include all of New England and as many records as we can get. If you have any more questions or suggestions, please don't hesitate. The list is set up that clicking Reply goes back only to the sender. Reply all or Reply to List, if that is in your options, will send to the list. Thanks to all of you for your concern and help. This project will continue and will always be free. Donations help, especially now, but are never required. John & Jodi Massachusetts Vital Records Project Administrators

    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Carleton HUTCHINSON, place of death, 1962
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, I've posted about my great-grandmother's nephew many times in the past, but I don't think recently. He is Carleton Homer HUTCHINSON, born March 1870 in probably Winchester. Both he and his father, George, were divorced at least once. Carleton seems to have lived in several, different towns in both MA and NH. And, I'm told he fought in the Spanish-American War. But, I don't know where he last lived. The SSDI only says that he died in MA in August 1962. No town or city is mentioned. Just wondering if anyone has suggestions. I was looking at my notes yesterday, and someone had recommended that I needed to get his "military record" and that would show where he died. I don't think I ever did that. Betty (near Lowell, MA) (From memory, Carleton's first wife and he had a son, Leslie, who became Dr. L. Loring HUTCHINSON, a Podiatrist in Cambridge, up to ~1960. And, they had a daughter, Gladys, who lived in Framingham and never married. Last week I wrote to the Framingham library and they could not find an obituary for Gladys. She died there in April 1975. I had hoped an obituary for her would tell about her family members. I think Carleton had another daughter, who might have lived in NH. But, I'll have to look at my old notes to remind myself of that. I don't think I found her as an adult.) (By the way, the BU Alumni Office just provided me with a copy of Bob Hutchinson's 1959 yearbook picture. Bob was Loring's only child. He was killed in a car accident in 2005, and was never married, so that was the end of that line of Hutchinson men.) (I have an old picture of Carleton in a uniform, and Bob looks just like his grandfather, so Dr. Hutchinson probably looked like both of them.) Remember to check the archives of all the Lists and Boards for your surnames and place-names. And, please remember to check the on-line auctions for for your surnames and place-names.

    2. Betty
    3. Hi Dianne, Thank you for that look-up. That's interesting. I wonder who the researcher is who is studying Francis and Lucy (?) KIDDER's family. I can offer information on these men if anyone is interested. I don't remember whether I already mentioned that Thomas KIDDER (grandson of James, son of John) died the "day" that Westford annexed off of Chelmsford. It is thought that Joanna was pregnant with their 5th son when that happened, and that was Francis. The oldest was Thomas "Cornet" KIDDER, and then the middle sons, Reuben, Aaron, and Joseph, moved to New Ipswich. Joanna remarried to Samuel FITCH and had more children. This extended family remained in the Westford area. Betty FYI: This is the other Francis' parents: 28 FRANCIS KIDDER (Enoch, James), of Oxford and Sutton, both in Worcester Co., Mass., born at Billerica, Middlesex Co., Mass., 1 Oct. 1703; died at Oxford, Mass., 20 Oct. 1763. He married at Billerica, 24 Feb. 1730, ELIZABETH HILL, born 14 May 1711; died at Sutton, Mass., 31 Jan. 1805, daughter of Jonathan and Mary (Brackett) Hill. ----- Original Message ----- Sent: Saturday, June 13, 2009 9:50 AM Subject: Re: [AMERICAN-REVOLUTION] Francis KIDDER, Jr., in Littleton, MA, b1752 > Betty ~ > > Regarding your Francis Kidders.......There are three listed that people > have joined DAR on: > > 1. 1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Anyone need Obit lookups at BPL?
    2. Allyssa Edwards
    3. I have been trying to get out to Boston Public Library at Copley again. at least every few weeks. This is a big accomplishment for me, as I hadn't been able to for many years. Since so many wonderful people helped me out with lookups, I want to offer something more back. If you need an obit lookup for Boston or Lynn area papers, I am best at those. But i can look into surrounding ones as well. So, if you need anything looked up, just let me know the details. I ask that you list at least the month and year, but prefer to know the date of death. Any with only a month, and no date will go to the bottom of the list. Just let me know :) -- ~*~ Allyssa (New England, USA) ~*~ (I am house-bound, so can only search from home. 1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Yahoo's Geocities - Info you might need !
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, The fact that Yahoo's Geocities effort is closing down this year has been dicussed on many Lists. A few days ago a researcher on one of the Lists for England counties offered the following information. It seems to be good information, and I thought many people should know about it. If you know another researcher who might need it, or know of a List where it might be discussed, please let them know. See below. Betty (near Lowell, MA) FYI: Hi Betty, Geocities and all the addresses (URLs) are going to vanish at the end of 2009. Yes we are being offered hosting by Yahoo!, who own GeoCities, but with a different URL so no connection to anything like the Ancestry message boards, Google and all the other shipping websites, etc. that link to my Site for pictures, information about the captain of the ship, the voyages etc. The second point is these websites were created online using the GeoCities web creation tools so getting the data off is very painful. (It is the same as if you decided not to buy a family history program and that you would put your entire family history onto one of the free online sites that offer this service then, one day, the Site closed down and you lost the lot.) The third point is that many people will not know their Website of ten years or more is going to vanish which, is why it is important to get the message out to people. There are sites there created by a father who are now maintained by their children as a memorial to his work on the family tree. The children are not researching the family because dad did it. They only log in yearly, if that, to update the copyright notice or date to keep the site in Google. RootsWeb do not allow you to have pictures. I can move mine to my Optus account (which I have started doing slowly) but that isn't the point I am making here. Cheers, Irene. (Melbourne Australia) FYI: George Kidder in FL is working on getting his KIDDER web site moved to another place ! http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/1255/1255.htm And, I think there are researchers who have used Geocities for their "family photos."

    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Francis KIDDER, Jr., in Littleton, MA, b1752
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, I continue to work on my KIDDER mystery, involving the 2 "teen" cousins, both named Joseph KIDDER, who both seem to have fought in the Revolutionary War. The Joseph, son of Francis "of Westford" (MA), had an older brother, Francis, Jr. "Junior" KIDDER. I was just reading the paragraph on "Junior" and it says he "might" have also fought in the War. I was wondering if anyone is research the Francis KIDDER extended family. Francis, Sr., seems to have lived in Westford, Concord, and then Tyngsboro, MA. But, Francis, Jr., remained in Littleton, MA. Betty (near Lowell, MA) FYI: 94 FRANCIS KIDDER ("JUNIOR") (Francis , Thomas, John, James), birth recorded at Concord, Mass., 29 May 1752; died at Littleton, Mass., 10 Feb. 1822, aged 70. He married first, at Littleton, 13 July 1779, ABIGAIL RUSSELL, born there 27 June 1757; died there 23 May 1812, daughter of John, Jr., and Abigail (Hildreth) Russell; secondly, at Westford, Mass., 28 Dec. 1812, MRS. LYDIA (CUMMINGS) ABBOTT, formerly wife of Joel Abbott, born 5 Nov. 1769; died at Littleton, 5 Mar. 1813, probably daughter of Isaac and Elizabeth (Trowbridge) Cummings of Westford; and thirdly, at Littleton, 27 Mar. 1814 or 1815, MRS. SARAH ("SALLY") (HAMLIN) DAVIS, formerly wife of Isaiah Davis of Harvard, Mass., born at Pembroke, Mass., 29 Oct. 1775; died 31 Aug. 1865, daughter of Major Eleazer and Sarah (Lobdell) (Bryant) Hamlin. Francis Kidder resided in Littleton, Mass., in the Southern part of which place he is said to have kept a tavern for some twenty years, subsequently leasing it to others after having erected a home for himself. He appears on the tax list of Littleton in 1783, and was active in town affairs, including service on the school board. On his tombstone epitaph he is designated as "Captain," bearing out the family tradition that he acquired such a title by service in the Revolutionary War. By the way, does anyone know the full name of his brother, John KIDDER's 3rd wife? 97 JOHN KIDDER (Francis, Thomas, John, James), probably born at Acton or Concord, Mass., 2 Sept. 1768; died at New Ipswich, N. H., 11 July 1853, aged 85. He married first, at Littleton, Mass., 2 Dec. 1794, OLIVE KELLEY of Watertown, Mass.; secondly, NANCY DUTTON; and thirdly, HEPSIBETH ---, born at Ashby, Mass.; died there 13 July 1844, aged 62. John Kidder resided in Littleton and Ashby, Mass., and late in life at New Ipswich, N. H., where he is said to have died at the home of his son-in-law, James Spaulding. (This might be the John KIDDER whose gravestone I accidentally found in Ashby, MA, a few years ago.) (It says in the book that John and "Junior" inherited "KIDDER heirlooms" from their uncle, Reuben KIDDER, in New Ipswich. Sure would like to know where those "heirlooms" ended up ! Hmmmm. I wonder if they could be in the Littleton Historical Society Museum. )
