Could the ages be reversed with him being older to reflect the first marriage? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hi Everyone, I've placed a bunch of books on the site in a single volume so you can search them all at once as I had done for the 39 volume set for Boston. These are the ones that cover Abington, Arlington, Boxborough, etc. from "early times till 1850." As with the other set, if you want to confine your search to one municipality, e.g. Abington, then include "AbingtonV" in one of the search fields. The search will likely be slow if you search for something that yields a zillion matches, e.g. "john". Actually I've put a throttle on it so it but it still slows down a lot. The index is quite large since the set of books, about 140, has a searchable text index of 62 Mbytes. I probably missed a few books in the series and might even have some repeats too. Hopefully you will find it useful. I know there are other copies on other sites. You can find them both on my directory and census pages: http://Directory.DonsList.net http://Census.DonsList.net Just a reminder: I've also placed finding guides at http://Guides.DonsList.net to help you find digitized microfilms from the National Archive that are hosted on the Internet Archive. I have guides for 30,000+ reels covering the complete decennial census's for 1800-1930, compiled service records from the Revolution and the Civil War, and an alphabetical index of volunteers from the War of 1812. The Revolution and War of 1812 records are particularly nice because they are organized alphabetically and contain personal information. So let me ask this... other than the family stories, what do you know about them? Have you found them in a census? It appears that John was in Addison, Vermont in 1942 and I suspect that he was no longer with his wife since his employer is listed on the WWII as someone that "will always know your address". I see them in Poultney in 1930, but I had no luck finding Walter's birth record. The 1930 census seems consistent with the birthdate's and the fact that John had been previously married, since his age minus age-at-first-marriage is different than Laura's. I can't spend more time right now, but any other clues wold be useful. John Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The family stories have been that Laura (McLaughlin) was in an orphanage at some point in her life. She was born in Lynn, Mass, 9/3/1892. I found a marriage record for John in 1911 but it says his brides name is Nellie McLaughlin and that she was 44 years old. I also found a birth record for a baby girl McLaughlin born in 1892 but the day and year are different. Could they have made a mistake with that info? Adams nor Williamstown Town Clerks have any record of > her death in either city. I think you have looked in the wrong places. When looking for vital records it is important to know what the correct city or town is, because towns divide to form other towns, and border lines change as portions of one town are annexed by another town (or border lines between two towns are adjusted). The standard reference for determining such things is "Historical Data Relating to Counties, Cities and Towns in Massachusetts," currently in its fifth edition, edited by William Francis Galvin (Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 1997). For most purposes, however, the first edition is sufficient, edited by Robert T. Swan and Henry Ernest Woods (Boston: Wright & Potter, 1920). The first edition is the only one in the public domain, and can be downloaded in a PDF file or in other formats from the Internet Archive Text Archive. Members of NEHGS can read the fifth edition online at the NEHGS site. Harriet died in 1876. North Adams would not have any contemporary records from before its incorporation on 16-Apr-1878 (although the Town Books might have some births that were re-recorded with the new Town Clerk after the town was incorporated). She is buried in Hillside Cemetery in North Adams. When she was buried that cemetery was in the town of Adams, so you should look to the Adams Town Clerk (not the North Adams City Clerk) for a death record. > nor have I had any luck finding her death location using the online > MA Vital Record Index for any city/town in Berkshire. Bear in mind that the electronic index is based upon the typescrpt index prepared by NEHGS some years ago, and that index has some omissions and errors. Since that index is based on the state copies of records (some of the pages of which are damaged and could not be fully indexed), it is also possible that when a Town Clerk copied information from the town register books into the registers sent to the state that some items might have been omitted or copied incorrectly. If an event cannot be found in the state copy it is often worthwhile to have the clerk check the records in the municipality where the event probably occurred. > she was born abt 1805 in Stephentown, NY ... She first married > George Williams before 1829 in NYS I don't know of much in print for Stephentown records. It is admittedly a long shot, but have you consulted "Records, Stephentown Baptist Church, 1795-1816: Stephentown, Rensselaer County, New York" (Springfield, MO: Richard D. and Anne G. Niles, 1995)? At this time, I have NO idea what her maiden name was, only that she was born abt 1805 in Stephentown, NY (from various census & her children's birth records). Census records for that time period are no help, only head of household's name was mentioned. She first married George Williams before 1829 in NYS and had 11 children by him - 9 of them b. in Canaan, Columbia County, NY - the youngest two were b. in Berkshire Cty, MA. George died sometime after Aug 1855 and before 1860; family was living in Pittsfield, MA in 1855 but George wasn't on the 1860 census; Harriet was noted as a widow. She then married again # 2 husband, Benjamin F. Gardner on 30 Aug 1860 in Pownal, VT (right across the MA state line/border). At the age of abt 56, she gave birth to twin sons in July 1861 in Woodford, VT - Lorenzo (my 2nd G grandfather) and Alonzo. I don't know what happened between Harriet and Benjamin...the twins were raised by other family members since the age of abt 4-8 years old. I found Benjamin had died in Northville, Wayne County, MI in Oct 1879 at the age of 79. On his death certificate, it indicated he was married but no name of wife was noted. I have no firm sources to indicate when he moved there but it would have had to have occurred after 1865. Benjamin and Harriet along with the twins and two of her children from George Wms were living in Dalton, Berkshire County, MA on the 1865 MA census. Twins were 4 years old at the time. On the 1870 census, Lorenzo, age 8 was living with his oldest half sister, Mary Ann (Williams) Rowland and her family in Williamstown, MA. Harriet is buried next to Mary Ann, her husband, William Rowland and another son, Frederick Williams in lot #506 located in Hillside Cemetery, N. Adams. Neither N. Adams nor Williamstown Town Clerks have any record of her death in either city, nor have I had any luck finding her death location using the online MA Vital Record Index for any city/town in Berkshire. I've hit a MAJOR brickwall. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hi Everyone, Thanks to Dale for his kind review of the volumes I've placed on DonsList. I've now added volumes 29-39 and have fixed several bugs in my software so that it's easier to navigate the books once you load them. I've added the guide material from the Internet Archive pages which now shows up along with a link to each of the 39 volumes in the upper right frame when you click on the book link on the directory or when you load the book. Don't hesitate to post to me directly or to the list (if appropriate) if you have problems. And thanks to Maureen and to everyone for your thanks and use of the site.
