One thing I was reminded of is this site. It has a new URL so you need to make note of it: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~azrwgw/ And, I was reminded that you can look at some Azorean records at your local LDS Center. Perhaps my husband and I will go visit the one in Nashua this month and see what we can look at. I think it was last year when a researcher said there is a way to search for an ancestor on ships to MA. But, I'm not finding that posting, yet. I'm remembering that it was very time-consuming to search those records. Oh, just noticed this statement on the above web site. It was searching the "passports" for people leaving on ships from the City of Ponta Delgada which was very time-consuming: The Centro de Conhecimento dos Azores (CCA) is in the process of digitizing Azorean records. Currently, the passports for Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel are up. Also on the AzoresGenWeb site is where you can place a Query, which I just did. And, you can search the Queries to see if anyone else is interested in your surnames. That's all I'll say for now. Thank you for the look-ups and for the information. I can add a few FYI's: Father PIMENTEL (sp?) was the priest at the Portuguese church in Cambridge, St. Anthony's. And, Joseph PACHECO's wife was seen with 2 names in different records, Jacintha de JESUS and Jacintha COSTA. The people on the Azores List told me that was common. And, on a marriage record I looked at, Elsie had given her surname as MORRIS (Amer. version), and the same for her parents who she listed as Frank and Phoebe MORRIS. Census records, etc., listed her mother as Philomina MOURA. And, probably that surname has several variations. "Tony" and Elsie PACHECO lived in East Cambridge. Yes, it was another researcher several years ago who found the PACHICO spelling. I don't remember whether I found him in 1910. I'll have to pull out my folder. For others, I found out this morning that the Azores "Group" is at www.google.com That's all I'll write for now. Oh, Tony might have been killed in 1929; I'll have to check my notes. There were 4 other men in the 1920-version car with him when it crashed into a street-car. They were all from Cambridge so they were probably all working in Taunton or Raynham at the time. I've mentioned this on the Boards/Lists before. Betty (near Lowell, MA) P.S. Also for others, don't forget to check out the archives of the Azores List for your surnames. www.rootsweb.com Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have saved the image for you and can send it directly. In the 1920 Census (ancestry.com; as PACHICO), Tony says he arrived in the US 1904 and gave his status as Al. Do you know if he ever filed for or became a citizen (as he died before 1930, perhaps not)? That would give his ship's information. Couldn't spot him in the 1910 Census; did not find a WWI Draft Registration for him. I've worked with a wonderful researcher in the Azores, if you're interested in some local help there. THE TROY NEWSPAPER PROJECT A multi volume Index of Death and Marriage Records transcribed from various Troy, NY newspapers A. The Troy New York Daily Whig for the years 1849 to 1858 is the EIGHTH set of newspapers recently added to the Troy Irish Genealogy Website. There are 3,777 reported deaths and 3,233 names on the reported marriages during this period. These records will be of great interest to genealogy researchers since the information in this data base predates the 1880 New York State law requiring the reporting of death and marriage records. These records may help with breaking down some of those "brick walls" that you have been struggling with. B. You can view these records by going to the Troy Irish Genealogy website at: www.rootsweb.com/~nytigs/ and click on PROJECTS and then click on THE TROY NEWSPAPER PROJECT. It should be noted that these records, like most of the TIGS data series, cover the general population in the area and are NOT restricted to Irish surnames. C. The following age distribution of the 3,777 deaths will be of interest: 1. No age was reported for 1,366 names and in 28 cases "child" was reported as the age while 23 cases were identified as "infant". 2. A breakdown of deaths by age groups shows: Under 1 year - 87 names. Age 1 to 10 - 396 names. Age 11 to 19 - 180 names. Age 20 to 29 - 353 names. Age 30 to 39 - 304 names. Age 40 to 49 - 222 names. Age 50 to 59 - 216 names. Age 60 to 69 - 228 names. Age 70 to 79 - 219 names. Age 80 to 89 - 111 names. Age 90 to 99 - 18 names. Age 100 plus - 3 names. D. While 548 of the 3,233 marriage records showed no indication of residence, those records where the residence was reported are of interest to researchers outside of the Troy Area as they show numerous cities and towns throughout New York State as well as 30 other states and even 12 foreign countries. Some specifics are: 1. While most of the records were for the Capital District Area, other areas throughout New York State were reported. Some locations in New York State and the number of records were: Albany-66, Albia-9, Ballston-6, Ballston Spa-4, Berlin-22, Brunswick-136, Buffalo-8, Cambridge-12, Cohoes-22, Easton-5, Glens Falls-8, Grafton-21, Greene-5, Greenbush-12, Green Island-40, Hoosick-19, Hoosick Falls-5, Hudson-6, Kinderhook-4, Lansingburgh-64, Nassau-11, Petersburg-9, Pittstown-46, Poestenkill-20, Sand Lake-27, Saratoga-16, Schaghticoke-42, Schenectady-13, Stephentown-4, Stillwater-5, Syracuse-7, Troy-1,286, Utica-6, Waterford-19, Watervliet-15, West Troy-41, West Sand Lake-6 and White Creek-7. 2. There were a sizable number of records from the neighboring states of Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut and New Jersey. Connecticut has 24 records, Massachusetts had 69 records including 13 from Boston, Vermont had 39 including 14 from Bennington and New Jersey had 12 records. 3. For the New York City area, there were 11 records for Brooklyn and 93 records for New York City. 4. Residence was also indicated from the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania including 11 from Philadelphia, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. 5. Foreign countries listed as the place of residence were Canada, China, Cuba, England, France, Germany, The Netherlands, Nicaragua, Scotland, Sweden, Sandwich Islands and Mexico. 6. At the time of the 1840 census, Troy, New York was the fourth wealthiest city in the USA on a per capita basis. This may account for the numerous individuals from across the United States coming to Troy to be married. E. There are several interesting death and marriage records in this group of the Troy Daily Whig newspapers. 1. The wedding of ex-president Millard E. Fillmore to Mrs. Caroline Carmichael McIntosh, a wealthy widow on February 10, 1858. Fillmore was the 13th president of the United States. 2. The wedding of Don Fermin Ferrer to Martha E. Winterbotham on May 9, 1858. Ferrer was the ex-president of Nicaragua. 3. The deaths in Green Island, NY of John Reed and his wife Caroline Hogle Reed on May 22, 1858. A 1858 New York Times Article on these two tragic deaths, is available at the following address: http://query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=F00710FB38551B7493C7AB178ED85F4C8584F9 4. The wedding of famed Swedish opera singer Jenny Lind to Otto Goldschmidt on February 5, 1852. Born Johanna Maria Lind on October 6, 1820, Jenny was often referred to as the "Swedish Nightingale". F. To date the 8 newspaper groupings added to the TIGS website cover 15,063 marriage names and 11,332 death records. Keep in mind that all these records predate New York State's recording of these vital statistics. Twenty more years of death and marriage records from the Troy Daily Whig, 1859 to 1878, will be added to the TIGS website in the next few months. Regards, Bill McGrath TIGS Project Coordinator Clifton Park, NY

His father was Joao PACHECO, and they lived in a town right beside Ponta Delgada. I know the name of the town but can't think of it at this moment. I can look in the archives to find the name. "Tony" PACHECO reportedly arrived at Age 20, so supposedly ~1905. I haven't spent too much time on his family, partly because there were many people named Antonio or Joseph PACHECO arriving in New England in that 1905 to 1910 timeframe. And, I don't know whether he traveled alone or with a relative. Because I've never found his correct "arrival," I don't know who is contact was upon arrival. I have belonged to the AZORES List for at least 5 yrs., and there are knowledgeable researchers on that List. But, there is also an AZORES "Group" where people help. I can't remember whether it is at Yahoo or Google at this moment. "Tony" PACHECO very soon settled in Cambridge, MA, where he and his wife, Elsie (MOURA) PACHECO raised their 5 children. Unfortunately, Tony was killed in a car accident near Taunton, MA, ~1927 - when Elsie was pregnant with twins. I have posted about this extended family on the MA Lists for at least 5 yrs. Betty (near Lowell, MA) P.S. I'm told there was another PACHECO family in Cambridge at the same time who came from the same Ponta Delgada area. My (now) husband's grandmother lied about them - possibly because she remained angry at her late husband for the rest of her life. The other sister married here to Francis MEDEIROS. All 3 sisters were widowed young, and all 3 lived fairly long lives in Cambridge.
