The only article that looks at all likely is one on the Hickson-Hixson-Hixon family 1663-1940, published in Poplar Row in October, 1984 (published by the Jackson County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society). However, the online index to Poplar Row at the Jackson County Chapter site does not list Walter or Margaret, so the family dealt with might have been a Virginia or Pennsylvania family.. Dale H. Torrey does list my ancestors' marriage: HIXSON Richard (-1718) & Margaret WADKINS/WATKINS; 14 Sep 1686; Milton {Reg. 36:19, 44:170; GDMNH 723}. The marriage is also in the Milton VR. Richard-1 Hixson's probate names his wife Margaret as administrator and mentions children John, Richard, Hannah, Rebeckah, Margaret, Elizabeth, Walter. (I am convinced that Walter's mother was actually Margaret Watkins. I have found no records of other marriages for Richard-1 or deaths of his wives. Note that Richard-1's oldest daughter was named Hannah. "Hannah" in Walter's birth record was probably an error by the clerk.) Back to the land grant from the king ... weren't these usually to people who had done something the British government would consider worth rewarding? As far as I can find, Richard-1 was basically a farmer and did no military service. Carol B. P.S. I suspect that if any of my ancestors had a lot of money, they spent it bribing clerks to remove evidence of them from the records. :-}
Hi I need some help to research my Hessian ancestor and his fellow soldier friend from the Revolutionary War. They were captured at sea on the British transport Brig--Favorite--and landed first in Maine then sent to Boston. Later they were sent inland to the Worcester jail and from there they were paroled out to work for their keep with local farmers until the Rutland Barracks could be completed. They were then interred there for some months. My Hessian signed a petition to be set free from these Barracks in 1779--Also on his petition appeared the names of the Select men of Paxton---Phineas Moore and John Avery. I need to know if any of these Selectmen's papers still exist and if they mention other Hessians who were POW's who remained in the area after the war--having taken the oath of allegiance and becoming Americans at the time. My Hessian is Georg Zacharias Hattstätt and his friend is Peter Rine Hart. I need to know if those records have any information about either of these men. Can anyone help with this search? I would appreciate this a lot as I cannot travel to research myself. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely; Jo Ann Hatstat [email protected]

Thank you, Dale. I checked the FHL catalog but didn't find anything. Is there any way to check on land grants from the king of England to people in Mass.? I am skeptical of that story. For one thing I have seen a map of (what is now) Sharon with land owners' names from about 1700; all the land seemed to be taken, but no HIXSON. Presumably if the king granted someone land, it would be land that no one of British descent was living on. But I would like to find out for sure. Carol B.

Two questions related to land in what is now Sharon, Mass. (formerly Dorchester, then Stoughton, then Stoughtonham; first in Suffolk County, now in Norfolk County) and the HIXSON family (also spelled Hixon, Hickson, etc.) These are items from "Sharon, Massachusetts: A History" by Sharon American Revolution Bicentennial Committee (Sharon, Mass., 1976). (1) "According to the records of the Sharon Assessors of Taxes, the Cobb's Tavern land originally was owned by Richard Hixon, who received it as a grant from the King of England. Edgar M. Hixon, great-grandson of Richard and at one time one of the Assessors of the town, substantiated this from his own family's records." (page 37) This Richard was probably the second of the name, born ~1692. (2) Richard (born ~1692) and his brother John donated the land for the Chestnut Tree Cemetery, laid out about 1730. I would like to find any records relating to these transfers. I am a member of NEHGS and have a copy of the Suffolk County deeds index. This includes the purchase of land in 1708 by Richard Hixson born ~1660 (father of John and Richard-2) but not either of the transfers listed above. Can anyone suggest where I might find this information, at NEHGS or elsewhere? adTHANKSvance!

I'm in the process of researching Manoel/Manuel NUNES who was born somewhere between 1867 to 1869 in The Azores and came to America sometime between 1887 to 1891. I've been unable to locate him on any passenger lists and there have been family rumors of Azorean ancestors working as fishermen before coming to America. If he arrived in America, via a fishing boat or as a mariner, I don't know which port he could have arrived in nor do I know the name of his ship. He settled in Fall River, Massachusetts, married twice, and lived the rest of his life there. I'm trying to figure out exactly how he got to America in the first place. Thanks! Pat McCoy, M.S.
