    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Miss TOPPAN, .mass murderer. ~1900 (KELLEY)
    2. Ms Betty Fredericks
    3. Hello,   In last Sunday's  "The Lowell Sun"   there was a front-page article about a story from 1900-1902.    The headline started:     "Seven Murders"  then "For 10 years 'Jolly Jane'  poured her poison."      It was about Miss Jane TOPPAN, who was born in Lowell in 1857, but not with that name.      She was born Honora KELLEY, with Irish-iummigrant parents:   Peter and Bridget KELLEY.     Bridget died of TB, when their 2 daughters were 8 and 6, and Peter took them to the .Boston Female Orphans Asylum.      In 1865, "Nora" was sent to Lowell to be an indentured servant for a TOPPAN family.      This is not a pleasant story to read.    But, if I had been able to tell you about it last Sunday,  it would have been a "Halloween story" - of sorts.       (We lost electricity last Sat. night,  and didn't get it back until Thurs.)   http://www.lowellsun.com/ci_19247994?IADID=Search-www.lowellsun.com-www.lowellsun.com   The on-line article doesn't show that it was a front-page article, and it continued on p.4 with a full-page.   "Jolly Jane" was convicted of 31 murders, but she later admitted it might have been up to 100 people murdered.      In addition to the gory details about how she poisoned so many people,  including her years of being a nurse,  there are many names mentioned in the article -  of the people she murdered.      So, if you are wondering how a relative died in the late 1800's and up to 1901, they could have been murdered by this woman.      She was finally arrested in 1901 and sent to Taunton State Hospital.    She died there in 1938.   Just an FYI for you.   Betty           (near Lowell, MA)     Another FYI is that the Boston Female Orphans Asylum is where my maternal grandmother was sent in 1899 when she was 10 yrs. old.     That was ~35 yrs. after "Nora" was sent there at Age 6.   And, I've mentioned the FITZGERALD family I tried to create a family-tree for.    Around 1915, Michael FITZGERALD and his wife separated,  and she remarried to Thomas J. KELLEY and had more children.     Last month I was able to find the KELLEY gravestone at the .Cambridge Cemetery.     Someone in the family must be still alive as someone is maintaining the stone.            (And, I can't remembered whether I've mentioned that  I .finally. found the missing "Michael."    During 1950's he and his 2nd wife moved to Bourne, MA, and remained there until their deaths.    Michael never had more children - even though his wife was 30 yrs. younger than he was.

    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] LEWIS Bros., Boston, 1850-1900
    2. Ms Betty Fredericks
    3. Hi again,   I just changed the search term to  "W. K. LEWIS, Boston"  and found the brothers in a "Boston Directory" on-line.    I think this Directory is from 1857,  and the initials of the brothers are mentioned.     And, I think it says the home is in Roxbury.   http://books.google.com/books?id=nYIqAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA215&lpg=PA215&dq=%22W.+K.+Lewis,+MA%22&source=bl&ots=kc2FIQfAcX&sig=JB4dbd4UOa4p2me90b8xKZOqcJA&hl=en&ei=3Fm2TsbOMOPL0QGl0pjSBw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=2&ved=0CCUQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q&f=false     It mentions it was a .pickle.  company on Broadway.    I just noticed the brothers are mentioned separately,  Edwin, Charles, and George.     With that new information,  I was able to find Edwin:   LEWIS, EDWIN J   (1860 U.S. Census) MASSACHUSETTS , NORFOLK, 5-WD ROXBURY Age: 40, Male, Race: WHITE, Born: MA Series: M653 Roll: 517 Page: 618   It seems that the brothers were definitely into  "pickles."      I wonder when they switched to "baked beans."   LEWIS, EDWIN J   (1880 U.S. Census) MASSACHUSETTS , SUFFOLK, BOSTON; 24-WD Age: 60, Race: WHITE, Born: MA Series: T9 Roll: 561 Page: 124     Just an FYI for you.   Betty               (near Lowell, MA)

    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] W. K. LEWIS, Bros. Baked Beans
    2. Ms Betty Fredericks
    3. Hello,   I woke up extra early this morning *  and am watching Antiques Roadshow;   it's a special show about unique items.     One man brought in a set of  antique .food cans.   he found under a Victorian house he was remodeling.     One of the cans had a label mentioning:    W. K. LEWIS, Boston,  Baked Beans.        I just did a search on-line and searching,  "W. K. Lewis, Beans, Boston,"   I'm finding this antique cans mentioned in Google Books.    The books are mostly about .antique food cans. where some are in museums.     This site is an article about the cans:   http://www.metnews.com/articles/2006/reminiscing081006.htm   Some articles say these LEWIS cans were patented in 1877,  and that .canned beans.  in general were created for fishermen and other men -  out to sea.   http://books.google.com/books?id=1mxid7WP-YMC&pg=PA248&lpg=PA248&dq=%22W.+K.+Lewis,+Beans,+Boston%22&source=bl&ots=Ntrk8ADb3M&sig=mjujrfHk4RxhYG8pGfl_kamNeRM&hl=en&ei=NEW2TsPrIcHm0QGH2qHRBw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=8&ved=0CDgQ6AEwBw#v=onepage&q&f=false   Some articles say the company was  W. K. LEWIS and Bros.     So, I am going to go look at census pages.   I just did,  and I'm having trouble finding this man in 1870 / 1880.     There was a William LEWIS, born Maine, who was in Boston, and his occupation was ship-carpenter.      Since .canned food. was originally made for ships, he is a possibility.     The first time I see W. K. LEWIS is in 1900, and he is listed as a manager.   LEWIS, WILLIAM K   (1900 U.S. Census) MASSACHUSETTS , MIDDLESEX, READING Age: 34, Male, Race: WHITE, Born: NY Series: T623 Roll: 665 Page: 248   Just out of curiousity, does anyone know who these LEWIS brothers were ~1880?  **   Also,  one of the LEWIS'  mentioned in census pages was a William, 13,  as a resident of "Deer Island."    I think the top of the page says  "Truant School,"  and many teen-age boys were there.   LEWIS, WILLIAM   (1880 U.S. Census) MASSACHUSETTS , SUFFOLK, DEER ISLAND; BOSTON Age: 13, Race: WHITE, Born: MA Series: T9 Roll: 552 Page: 250   Just an FYI   for you.               Betty              (near Lowell, MA)   (on Lists for 10 yrs.;   now an Admin for 9 Lists)   (We lost electricity Sat. night and didn't get it back until Weds. night, and we got back home on Thurs.     Just a reminder why there were less postings last week.)   * I thought I was getting up early at 4 am, but the clock says 3 am - don't forget to adjust your clocks.   **   My LEWIS great-grandparents arrived in Boston   in 1881, with their baby son,  and then had a dozen more children.     So, their  LEWIS sons weren't born until after those "baked beans"  were being offered for sale.     ("Stanley" LEWIS, b1859 Liverpool, England,  was shipped to Nova Scotia in 1874 as a teen.)
