Jones, one of the former proprietors of the Athol Transcript, died at Santa Barbara, Cal., Monday." The dates would put Edward's death on Monday, May 11, 1874. Santa Barbara had a lot of hot springs spas then and as mentioned in his obit you have from the Aroostook Times maybe he was there for his health. I will look to see if there is an obit for his wife. The Athol Transcript no longer exists - it was absorbed into what is now Athol's daily paper (Athol Daily News). I contacted them several years ago, but got no answer. We live in the same state, and I have been there once several years ago to research, but think I need to make another trip and visit the paper as well as to re-visit the town clerk's office and the library. Edward & Louise (or Louisa - it says something different depending on what you're looking at, but her tombstone says Louise)had 3 children. George was the oldest, Jessie born in 1872, then Elsie (my grandmother) in 1873. Louise died on December 31, 1878. Her cause of death is listed in the town vital records as "uterine peritonitis." Upon her death, George & Elsie went to live with their grandparents (Louisa & Rupus Leonard), and Jessie went to live with her great-aunt (Louisa Leonard's sister), who had at least one child that had died and the remaining child (a son) away at college. No idea why they split them up, unless the aunt wanted to have a child in the house. All very sad. If you'd like to look at the Edward Jones family on Ancestry, it is in the "Hurd Family Tree". It's a public tree and my user name (as above) is ginnyc01. And, yes, I got Edward's date of death from his tombstone. I just got through with a project of sorting out pictures from various cemetery visits (great that I have a patient husband!), and will post those pictures on Ancestry soon. Meanwhile, I've attached the pictures of the stone. Thanks again. Ginny Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My great-grandfather, Edward Francis Jones, b. c1843 in Woodstock New Brunswick, migrated to Maine and later on to Massachusetts. He died on 8 May 1874. While in Houlton Maine, he worked on a newspaper, the "Aroostoook Times." On May 24, 1874 the "Times" carried an obituary, stating that Edward had died in Santa Barbara, CA. No cause of death was given. I can find no record of him dying in Santa Barbara (I even contacted the Santa Barbara Genealogical Society and they did a search for me that was a dead end). He fought in the Civil War, mustered out in January 1866, and settled in Athol MA, where he founded a newspaper, "The Athol Transcript". He married in 1868, settled in Athol and fathered 3 children. I can find no reason for him leaving his wife, children and business for California, even if his health was failing, and no record of him on any of the California census lists. Also, his death recor! d isn't in either MA or CA vital records. He is buried in Athol, along with his wife. Possibly, where he ran a Massachusetts newspaper, the Globe might have run a small obituary at the time of his death? Anything you can come up with would be a great help. He is the most frustrating of my "brick walls." Thank you. Ginny Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
