The name GAW does not appear in the Griffiths Valuation Index (1847-1864) in Mayo and the index is usually a good indicator for surname geography. The name does appear in Antrim, Cavan, Down, Derry, a James Gaw is listed in Cavan and Down. It is not impossible of course that Mayo is the correct county, but I wonder what your source for Mayo is, nothing worse than looking in the wrong place. Mike.
