So what is an ordnance map? > > Bill Karr As the question is addressed to "Dennis", you may not be interested in the following, but the answer is the maps were made by the Royal Engineers, who were in turn responsible to the Board of Ordnance. Because of this, the map making and surveying organization of the Royal Engineers/Board of Ordnance was named the "Ordnance Survey". The military connection of the OS was maintained in both Britain and Ireland until recent times. Regards, The Chief
