Hi, A Great job by Joyce, I spoke to her last year about some of my rellies in Deans Grange and she said that there were some areas of that very large cemetery should wouldnt venture into, as it would be unsafe due to two legged muggists being there. Hi - I've come across a few websites where you have to purchase access to view Griffiths Valuation. Can anyone tell me if you get more data by purchasing than that shown in the excellent free site mentioned below? i.e. http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_start.php Thank you for your help, there are some wonderfully informed people on this feed. Theresa -----Original Message----- From: genire-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:genire-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of curraveha Sent: 08 March 2010 02:44 To: genire@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: can you help ? I'll Try!! Check his marriage and death record, sometimes the place of birth is listed. Check the ships register listings to find the vessel and date of immigration. In some cases the last place of residence is noted. The Irish Times http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/index.cfm website has listing of family names by county in the 1840's and the number of families of that surname in each county. If your ancestor does not have common name this can eliminate some counties. If his parents were alive when he left, one may be listed in Griffiths Valuation. How does this help? Between the 1600's and 1900's a naming tradition developed in England and Ireland where the first male child was named after the paternal grandfather, the first female after the maternal grandmother, the second children were named after the opposites, the third children after the parents. It is referred to as the Irish Naming Pattern. Many immigrants continued it on this side of the ocean. If it shows up in your family here there is a good chance your grandfather was named after his grandfather who might show up in Griffiths Valuation if he was still living when it was done (1845-1855). You can check this at http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_start.php. Two excellent books on Irish Genealogy sources are Tracing Your Irish Ancestors by John Grenham (3rd Ed.) and Discovering Your Irish Ancestors by Dwight Radford and Kyle Betit. The latter has a good section on Canadian sources. Many Public libraries can get these if available in their networks. I've been very fortunate in researching my Irish ancestors that a great-uncle had a moderate interest in family history (but all undocumented). Newspaper obituaries seem to confirm some of his details on a couple of those ancestors but I still haven't found the heritage people in Ireland. At some point you realize records are harder and harder to find. Ann

Thanks so much for the replies. To Ann: Yes, records here in Ontario have disclosed marriage, census, and death information but, unfortunately, none hint at where in Ireland. I'm not positive that newspaper obits have been checked so I'll put that on my list of "to do's". To curraveha: Unfortunately, the name is quite common, I guess. My g- grandfather's name was Joseph Larkin and from his marriage records, I know that his parents were Patrick and Mary Fallon. I'm afraid these are all quite common names. I checked the name on the surnames link you provided and it seems there are Larkins in every county and many Josephs and Patricks among them. Since I'm unaware of any siblings or where my g-grandfather might fit into the birth order, the naming patterns probably don't help much at the moment but I'll keep that in mind as I continue my search. I'll make a note of those books and try to get them from the library. To Dennis: I'm working my way through the links you posted and hoping that one of them might turn up something new to me. I do appreciate all of your replies and suggestions. Thank you.

Have you checked local newspapers for obituaries? Did he marry in Ontario and have you seen his marriage registration? All these records may hint at where he came from in Ireland. Ann W.
>From The Irish Times, 24 January 1920 - OFFICE OF LORD MAYOR OF CORK TO BE ABOLISHED Our Cork Correspondent telegraphed on Tuesday night :--Rumours were current in Cork to-night as to the policy which the Sinn Fein Party in the Corporation will adopt when they meet for the election of a Lord Mayor and High Sheriff on Friday week. It is said that they will adopt a policy of obstruction to British rule, and, as they have a working majority on the Council, they will propose to abolish what is called the British institution of Lord Mayor and simply elect a chairman. As to the statutory procedure of submitting the names of three persons from which the Viceroy will be pleased to select one to fill the ancient office of High Sheriff, it is said that the nominees will be Alderman Frederick Murray, who is awaiting trial in Cork Jail on a charge of wounding a policeman ; Denis McNeilus, a native of Donegal, who is "wanted" for the alleged attempted murder of a police sergeant, and who was rescued from Cork County Jail under extraordinary circumstances ; and Andrew Ahern, who is "wanted" because he was the occupier of the house known as the Grattan street Arsenal, where a terrible explosion occurred with fatal results, and where later a huge quantity of bombs and gelignite was found under the basement of the wrecked building. It is further stated that the Republican majority in the Corporation will ignore the authority of the Local Government Board. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Dennis Ahern | Ireland Newspaper Abstracts Acton, Massachusetts | http://www.IrelandOldNews.com - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
First time posting to a news group and I hope I'm doing this correctly. If I've messed it up, my apologies. I seem to be at a standstill with my maternal great-grandfather. I know only that he was born in Ireland in 1827and that he came to Ontario in 1855. I have no idea from where in Ireland he came, nor do I know anything of any siblings either he might have had. Any idea where or what I'd do next to try to find more info ? Any insight you could provide would be much appreciated.

I seem to be a distant relative of Miles Byrne of the 1798 Insurrection fame. Would anyone have any family history on him? I have read his memoirs, but they don't have much on his family. Thank you, anyone that can help.
