    3. So would anyone have suggestions to track down Charles O'HARA(b. 1849 d. 1919) IRL -> Boston? The naturalization paper simply states Sligo. I attempted to have the Sligo center look him up. They couldn't find a Charles. Thanks Bill -- --- William O'Hara

I have had no luck in finding out the place of birth of my g-grandfather David Coulter. I know he was born in Tyrone in 1861 and that his parents David Coulter Sr and Jane Simpson were married in Clogherney, Tyrone but lived in Legacurry, Parish of Clogherney, Tyrone. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Are all resources on the internet paid resources?

The good news is you have a family group with names and years of baptism or marriage. There are heritage centres in almost every county with computer indexes of parish records which, for a fee, they can search for this combination of parents and children. The bad news is that Cork, the largest county, is not completely covered. The Mallow Heritage Centre has parish records for the Diocese of Cloyne, which is mostly North and East Cork. There is no functioning heritage centre providing assistance for the Diocese of Cork & Ross, which is mostly South and West Cork. It's a gamble, but it may be worth your while to request a search from the Mallow Heritage Centre. If nothing else, it would suggest the possibility that the family you seek was in the Diocese of Cork & Ross. Either that or they were in the Diocese of Cloyne, but in a parish for which no records have been indexed. See http://tiara.ie/contact.htm for list of heritage centres. -dja

    2. Douglas McCullough
    3. Since we're discussing Irish genealogy..... I have an ancestor, George McCullough, who sailed from Larne on the brig Betty in the summer of 1772, and arrived in Charleston, SC, November 1772. Upon arriving in Charleston, he received a Bounty Land Grant. The Privy Council grant records do not record any other individuals with the same surname, so the asumption might be that no other family members accompanied him. There are no known McCulloughs in South Carolina who might have been his siblings, although some descendants are known; The land he received was in an area populated by German Lutherans, and he married into the Lutheran community. Because of the Bounty Land Grant, George was probably at least 18 and without doubt Protestant, not indentured nor a criminal transplant. Question: Is there any likelihood that there is information about George McCullough that could be found in Irish records? Thanks, Douglas McCullough dmccullough@jam.rr.com ----- Original Message ----- From: <GENIRE-D-request@rootsweb.com> To: <GENIRE-D@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, November 24, 2005 10:00 AM Subject: GENIRE-D Digest V05 #339

I too am having problems tracing my Irish Ancesters. All I have from English Census records are that an Unknown Casey born in Cork had at least two sons: Dennis Casey b. 1813 and James Casey b. 1816 both born in Cork. Dennis (or Denis) married an unknown Mary b. Ireland 1811 and had a son John b. 1835 and a daughter Elizabeth b. 1837 both born Ireland. James married an unknown Mary b. 1814 in Ireland and had a son Benjamin Casey b. 1843 in Cork and then had further children in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. I don't know what towns in Cork they were born so any tips on where to go from what I have would be most welcome. Thanks in advance Karen :))

There are no complete census for this time : period, no civil registration etc. The challenge is finding the location. You have exact dates, but if you do not even know what county in Ireland, it may be difficult to find records. Sometimes there are mentions of birth death or marriage in newspapers, but again, if you don't know the locale, it's a big job to search. There are ways to narrow it down based on distribution data, but that is not always a guarantee. Ahern, for example, is mostly found in Munster counties, particularly Cork, but if an Ahern enlisted in the Royal Irish Constabulary his first posting would be to a county distant from his home. 3. Alan, When I started out as you are doing, I read somewhere that if you don't already know where your Irish ancestors came from, you will never find them. For me, that has proved to be true. But I don't want to discourage you. The magic key seems to be some bit of paper somewhere in the family, an old letter, a single word on the back of an old picture, something that tells you the place of origin. So if you have not already done so, suggest you contact every member of the family and get them to pull out every piece of paper which might be connected with your ggf so you can examine them for clues. You might also get lucky with a death certificate or some other Canadian record, but I don't know anything about those things in Canada. Good luck in your search. 2. I've been working on my genealogy off and on for the last 20 years. Until recently, I was unable to find any information on my fathers side of the family. I now know that his grandfather/mother were born in Ireland (I have exact dates) prior to 1865. My question is - what are my chances of finding anything? From my initial search of what records there are would indicate that I might have a lot of trouble. There are no complete census for this time period, no civil registration etc. Any advide as to where to start would be appreciated. 3. From The Cork Constitution, 27 September 1886 - POLICE OFFICE, SATURDAY.--(Before Major Lyons, Alderman J. H. Scott, and Mr. W. R. Starkie, R.M.) Catherine Lynch was put forward by Sergeant Dunny, charged with committing a serious assault on a woman named Margaret Cadogan, by striking her on the head with a poker. The prisoner was sent to gaol for a month. Nicholas Murray, alias John O'Connor, was put forward by Sergeant Reilly, charged with the larceny of a shirt, value 3s. 6d., from Miss Kate Halloran, Kilreendowney. The prisoner was in the complainant's employment, and was identified as having pawned the shirt. He was sent to gaol for one month. On the application of Mr. A. Blake, an ad interim transfer of the license of a house in Great George's-street was granted from John Connolly to John Dunlea. A number of persons were prosecuted by Mr. D. J. Galvin, Executive Sanitary Officer, for permitting nuisances on their premises, and the usual orders were made.
