Some people, particularly in areas where telephone charges affect cost of access to the Internet, subscribe to email lists in order to read this newsgroup. The mailing list gatewayed with the soc.genealogy.ireland newsgroup is called GENIRE, and can be received either directly, through GENIRE-L or in digest mode from GENIRE-D. A computer is not a sentient being. Once you have managed to subscribe to one of these mailing lists, the only way to stop getting messages is to say the magic word. The magic word is unsubscribe. If you say the magic word in the correct manner, a duck will not descend from the ceiling with money in its bill, but you will be removed from the list. To leave GENIRE-L, send mail to GENIRE-L-request@rootsweb.com with the single word unsubscribe in the message subject and body. To leave GENIRE-D, do the same thing with GENIRE-D-request@rootsweb.com. See http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/IRL/GENIRE.html for further information on subscribing to GENIRE, or on viewing the archives of messages that have been posted.
I enjoy encountering obscure or different occupations from olden day. However, I was surprised to see something totally new today on the 1881 census - a woman working as a "blue wrapper." Any ideas? Regards, The Chief

This seems to be a peculiarity associated with Windows. Other people have also mentioned having the same problem and they have all been Windows users. I use Mozilla and don't have any trouble, nor have I heard of any other non Windows users having any difficulty using the back button. < Cue non Windows user who does have the problem and/or a Windows user who does not!! :)) > You could always try using Mozilla or Firefox which is the standalone browser from the same stable.
Do you not get the 'Search Results' link at the top of the IGI Individual Record? I just checked and it is there for me. You can sometimes get your results back by refreshing the page with the error message. "For some unknown reason, I am having a problem with the on-line-IGI. After entering my search criteria, I get the usual listing of search results. Clicking on the first result will give the needed details, but I can no longer return to my search results. I continue to get a Warning Page Expired error message" Dave, this gets even more mysterious for me. I found the same thing started happening a couple weeks ago. I'm guessing Microsoft did an automatic update/security patch. Or it is something that happened when familysearch.org did their update. That is when the problem started happening for me. Today I was just sort of trying to figure it out - googling to see if I could find a solution (NO). Anyway, I discovered if I went to the old search site (http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp) from my bookmark I had the problem. If I started the search at the new familysearch.org site - the problem did not occur!!! So, I tried selecting "search" from the new page, then using the old search form - problem happened again. I'm thinking it has to be the site as even with the latest Microsoft update, no other search page has the problem. Jennifer Clark
From The Cork Examiner, 11 June 1878 - WHIT-MONDAY.--Yesterday being Whit-monday, the various banks in the city were closed. The streets were fairly thronged with strangers and sight-seers from the country throughout the day, but the usual bustle and signs of a day's "outing" were not so apparent as in former years, owing to the very unpropitious weather which has prevailed for some days. Some excursions were arranged for, but owing to this circumstance, they were postponed to a future day. The majority of the people who left the city for a day's pleasure proceeded to Bandon, where a good day's amusement was had at the Bandon and Cashelmore Hunt Steeplechases. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Dennis Ahern | Ireland Newspaper Abstracts Acton, Massachusetts | http://www.IrelandOldNews.com - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Hello, For some unknown reason, I am having a problem with the on-line-IGI. After entering my search criteria, I get the usual listing of search results. Clicking on the first result will give the needed details, but I can no longer return to my search results. I continue to get a Warning Page Expired error message. I then have to reenter my search criteria, acquire the results, and then look at the second entry. Needless to say, this is very time consuming. And it wasn't always this way. It seems like the problem is a recent one. At first, I thought it was because I had changed some setting on my desktop computer, but the same thing now occurs on my laptop. Has anyone else had this problem, or - better yet - does anyone have any idea how to fix the problem? Thanks for any help. Dave Riley Portsmouth, RI
G'day Dennis Thanks for the information. Now here is the second question. Is there a listing anywhere of the deaths that were reported in the paper or would I need to look each edition of the newspaper. Here in Australia our local Historical group has gone back through the local papers and done a listing of deaths that were published. It makes researching that much easier! regards and thanks again Ian Donaldson > > : Would the death of someone dying in Queenstown sometime in the 1860s be > : recorded in the Cork Examiner or was there a "local" paper? > > http://www.nli.ie/newsplan/CountyList.asp?County=6 lists a paper called > the Queenstown Searchlight, but it didn't start until 1906. Hi & Happy Christmas to all, I am Irish and in tracing my ancestors in Ireland have recently traced one family who emigrated to US in 1851, so I am trying to trace what happened to them in the USA. This is the reverse of the usual process of US residents trying to trace their Irish roots. I have no experience of US records, but have tried Ancestry.com and found NY census records showing some of the Anne Garry family still living together in 1860 & 1870, but after that a dead end. Has anyone any advice on sources for this type of research? John
Cheers All, Trying desperatley to locate James Rutherford.James was the father of James Smyth Rutherford born 1842 in Belfast Ireland (according to death certificate) married Catherine Totton 1862 St Anne's Church of Ireland, Belfast. The witnesses to James And Catherine Tottons marriage were: Joseph Lindsay for James and Mary Anne Green for Catherine. Catherine's father James, a servant, attended. Catherine is listed as a Weaver. James as a Paver and his father as a Carpenter. James continued this occupation in Australia as did my father Joseph, his son to his marriage to Catherine Shaw in Aust. They were both members of the Church of Ireland. Family lore tells me the family came from Scotland. Haven't done much researching in Ireland and would appreciate any help. Xmas wishes to all, Wal
