    1. Re: Griffith's Valuation on askaboutireland
    2. Dennis, I will compare the askireland copy with the OS map I have here tomorrow. I could not go to the proper lot easily! Ellen -----Original Message----- From: Dennis Ahern [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, September 30, 2008 09:27 PM To: [email protected] Cc: [email protected], [email protected] Subject: Griffith's Valuation on askaboutireland Has anyone figured out how to interpret the maps that go with the Griffith's Valuation search engine at askaboutireland.ie? See http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_family_search_form.php for search engine. If you do a family name search, for example, and click on "Details" for an item in the results list you get a map reference number under Publication Details. I can't seem to find the location on the map. I was always under the impression that the only place you could get the maps that keyed to the pages from Griffith's was at the Valuation Office in Dublin. Does this tool provide that detail? I haven't had much luck finding the location on the map yet. -dja ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

The colt was one year and eight months old. The fetlocks of one fore and one hind leg were cut close to the hoofs. M'Carthy intends to claim £10 compensation at the next presentment sessions for the barony. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Dennis Ahern | Ireland Newspaper Abstracts Acton, Massachusetts | http://www.IrelandOldNews.com - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

    1. News extracts: Sept. 29, 1828: The sloop 'Mary' lost, off Howth Head, near Dublin
    2. Alison Kilpatrick
    3. Transcribed from the 7 October 1828 edition of The Newry Commercial Telegraph newspaper, by permission of The British Library: Melancholy Occurrence at Sea. On the night of Monday, the 29th ultimo, the sloop Mary, of Ulverston, bound from Dundalk to Southampton, laden with grain and tar, encountered a tremendous squall off Howth Head, at some miles from shore--in a few minutes she capsized, and went down. Of her crew, consisting of seven men, three were unfortunately lost with their ill-fated vessel. The remaining four supported themselves in the water by swimming, and the accident being fortunately observed from the Head by some of the crew of the Morning Star wherry, they immediately manned their little vessel, and, with the utmost alacrity, put off to the assistance of their fellow-beings in distress. They were all picked up and taken into the boat, but in almost a state of insensibility. On their return back to land, one of them, from the length of time he had remained in the water, and the sufferings he had endured, breathed his last.--Dublin Paper. ====================

    2. I am definitely a geneticist and not a genealogist. When I asked FTDNA (FamilyTreeDNA) as to how they determined Niall's genetic make-up, I believe they told me they used his teeth (from his corpse) to give them 67 marker cells, and the web site for him shows all 67 alleles (whatever that means). I compared my own 67 marker cells and I have them in hand. 63 of the 67 markers are identical to Niall's 67 marker cells. Beyond that I do not know very much at all. I suggest that SHE telephone FTDNA and ask them for more information. It may take a while, since their lab was in the direct line of IKE hurricane. They hope to be back on line within days. Hope this is not too confusing! 1. News extracts: Sept. 23, 1792: The Hearts of Oak at Raphoe
    2. Alison Kilpatrick
    3. Transcribed from the 21 March 1793 edition of the Calcutta Gazette newspaper, by permission of The British Library: Dublin, October 6. By a private letter from Raphoe [co. Donegal] we learn that, on Sunday evening the 23d of last month, during the time of divine service, a large body of men, amounting in number to more than 1,200, and much better armed than could possibly be expectd, marched in to that town in martial array; and after parading through it for a considerable time, to the great terror of the more peaceable inhabitants, at length made a public proclamation that they were determined not to pay any tithes in future; and then departed without committing any act of violence. They called themselves The Hearts of Oak, and promised to return in greater force on the following Sunday, when they would more explicitly avow their intentions, and more decidedly explain their demands. =======================

At midnight on Saturday, Adam M'Lean, boiler maker, Francis Street, Glasgow, was apprehended for killing Margaret Galbrait, his wife. The woman, who was a street hawker, was selling onions on Rutherglen Road, and was quarrelled with by her husband for giving whiskey to a soldier. She called M'Lean a thief and a returned convict, and he retorted by striking her a severe blow on the head. The woman at once fell to the ground, and when lifted was found to be dead.
