I spent hours yesterday exploring the British Royal family's genealogy. I found an unusual(for me) place to explore. I also have an interest in history and southern culture and this site provided me with tons of info. It had a history of clothing male and female, food, time lines, military history and tons and tons of things I haven't had time to explore. Hope its not tooo far off topic for this mailing list. It did include some genealogy stuff too www.wikipedia.org -- Proud member of IBSSG
[This is a request from one of our new members, Fiona Wilson. I've already taken the survey -- it's not too long, it's interesting and actually makes you think about your old pictures. Why don't you help Fiona out and take her survey .. Sally] Questionnaire about Old Family Photos in Family History Research You are invited to complete a questionnaire which forms part of my dissertation research for my MSc in Information Management. I am interested in researching my own family history and particularly intrigued by the Victorian photo albums in our family. This has motivated me to find out more about the information needs and behaviours of family historians with special regard to old family photos (c.1840-c.1901). This questionnaire explores various aspects of the importance of old family photos to your family history research, questions about identifying and labelling old photos, and about storing both original and digital versions of these photos. To read more about the questionnaire and then access it, please visit: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=rZN_2fhfPk0ITnVhluANR89g_3d_3d Thank you for any help you can give. Getting to the Heart of the Subject: Are You Guilty? By Joan Young joan@volunteer.rootsweb.com Have you ever posted a query on a RootsWeb mailing list or message Board and gotten absolutely no response? Does it seem like everyone But you is getting the answers and feedback they need while you are Shut out in the cold? If so, let's try to pinpoint the reason and Improve your odds of making that RootsWeb connection. THE PROBLEM Most people are constantly on the go. They try to "multitask" to cover A lot of ground as quickly as possible. When we scan our inboxes for new e-mails, or search new message board Posts, we generally don't read every word of every message. Many of us Scan the subject lines and then only read those messages that appeal To us; that is, we read the message if we find a name, location, or Fact in the subject line that attracts our attention. Digest mailing list subscribers, especially, are notorious for quickly Scanning the subjects in the index of a digest before deciding which Messages to read and which to ignore. If we have books at our disposal That allow us to do lookups, we often only read those posts that Mention the topics covered by our books. PITFALLS TO AVOID When we encounter a subject line that says "no subject," or a generic Subject line such as "Looking," "Searching," "Genealogy," "My Family," Or worse yet, "Help!" we tend to disregard the message and move on to The next e-mail. Another red flag for someone perusing a mailing list is the digest Subscriber who merely clicks "reply" to a digest message and leaves The digest as the subject of the reply. I think we'd all admit that a Subject line of "SMITH Digest, Vol 2, Issue 171" isn't exactly telling Us much about the content of the message within. When replying to a Digest message be sure to change the default subject to an informative One. A WELL-WRITTEN QUERY IS MEANINGLESS IF IT IS NEVER READ Quite possibly you have drafted an informative, well-written query With the names of the people you are researching, details of the times And places where they lived, and the information you wanted to learn. However, it may still be lost if no one reads your message because of A poor subject line. Your message body should embellish your subject Line and provide additional details. THE SOLUTION: CREATING A MEANINGFUL SUBJECT LINE TO ATTRACT READERS Provide concise but specific information about the content of your Message. Include the name, location, and time frame of the individuals In your message. Tell us what information you are looking for. In Other words, briefly outline your reason for posting the query. If Your query includes an interesting story about your ancestor, provide The reader with an indication of the story enclosed so that your Message attracts his attention. Some examples of good subject lines follow: --Maiden name needed for Sophie who married John SMITH in 1900 in Chicago, Illinois --Seeking parents of Joseph JONES born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, In 1765 --Looking for Obituary of James JOHNSON who died in Clearwater, Florida, in 1965 --Seeking Descendants of Henricus GEIGER who Died in 1746 in Lembach, Alsace, France --James O'REILLY, born New Jersey, 1830; killed at Battle of Gettysburg, 1863; need marriage information --Morris FRIEDMAN, immigrated in 1900 to Philadelphia, PA, from Russia--Seeking Village of Origin Note: It is typical to capitalize surnames so that they quickly catch Readers''s attention. CONCLUSION The success of your query rests largely on your ability to create a Subject line that will grab readers. Readers will be more likely to Take the time to study your message and consider whether they have an Interest or an answer for you. So stop crying for HELP in the Wilderness and SEARCHING and LOOKING aimlessly, and start providing Specifics in your subject lines. The year was 1882 and the United States passed several new laws regarding immigration, the first of which was the Chinese Exclusion Act. The legislation blocked the immigration of Chinese "skilled and unskilled laborers and Chinese employed in mining" and only allowed entry to non-laborers who could be certified by the Chinese government that they were qualified to immigrate. It also required Chinese immigrants who left the U.S To obtain certification in order to reenter. The second piece of legislation, passed in August of 1882, further excluded lunatics, idiots, and persons likely to become a public charge." A fifty cent passenger tax on each person entering U.S. Ports was enacted to defray the cost of immigration regulation. These restrictions came at a time when the Jewish population began leaving Russia in response to the newly enacted "May Laws" of 1882. The May Laws restricted Jewish settlement, forcing many from their homes, and made it illegal to conduct business on Sundays and Christian holidays. In New York City, Thomas Edison opened a power station on Pearl Street. The station, which provided electricity to one square mile in Manhattan, was the start of the electric utility industry, and its success increased the demand for electricity. Newly emerging technology took a hit in November as a solar storm wreaked havoc on the telegraph industry, causing delays in the transaction of business. The New York Times of 18 November 1882 reported that "from 9 am until noon, telegraph business east of the Mississippi and north of Washington was at a stand-still . . . An aurora borealis was the first evidence of the overcharging of the atmosphere with electric fluid." Transmissions from Europe were also affected, as was the newly developed telephone system. When it comes to putting your family history in writing, the more you know about history, the better. This week try to find a resource through which you can learn more about a particular time, place, or condition that relates to your ancestors. Learn about social conventions through editorials in historical newspapers. Learn about geography from a historical atlas. Learn about immigrant conditions from books found at your local library, or at used and new bookstores. Take it in small digestible pieces and slowly but surely you'll build up your knowledge of the times and places in which your ancestors lived. From RootsWeb Review this week. Economic History: How Much Is That? So you just found your ancestor on the 1860 census, and you see the value of his personal estate listed as $500. "That's great," you think, "but how much is that today?" A site called Economic History can help you figure that out. Use their calculators and other resources to get an idea of whether your ancestor was a prince or a pauper. http://eh.net/hmit/ Example: What Is the Relative Value? The following was written by the Keep Genealogical Records Open Workgroup: Genealogists fight closing of public records as guise in war against ID theft and terrorism A group of genealogists announced today that they have begun a project to educate governmental leaders and the public that closing or restricting access to many public records will have little impact on preventing an enormous identity theft problem or terrorism attacks in the United States. Federal and state governments have been closing or trying to close many public records or limiting the publics access to them, especially vital records--birth, marriages, and deaths, explains Jean Foster Kelley, CG (Certified Genealogist) of Tampa, Florida. They want to protect peoples privacy, prevent identity theft, and prevent terrorism, she says. But we find theres no evidence that open public records contribute to identity theft or terrorism to any measurable degree." Instead, she says, restrictions actually prevent many genealogists, news people, and others who have legitimate reasons to see the records from freely viewing them. She says she and four other genealogists formed the Keep Genealogical Records Open Workgroup (KGROW) to prepare a position paper to combat the war on public records movement that has swept the country since the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The group plans to solicit support for its paper from the Association of Professional Genealogists, the news media, and other organizations later this summer and fall. Kelley is co-chair of KGROW along with Dick Robinson, CG (Certified Genealogist), of Boynton Beach, Florida. Other members are: Alvie L. Davidson, CG (Certified Genealogist), Lakeland, Florida; Melinde Lutz Sanborn, FASG (Fellow, American Society of Genealogists), Derry, New Hampshire; and Frederick E. Moss, JD, LLM, Plano, Texas. KGROW is a project of the Florida Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists (APG) APG is the worlds leading professional genealogical organization of some 1 700 family history and related professionals. Since 2001, most states have tightened public record laws, and more records are threatened every year. A 2006 Associated Press survey showed that states passed 616 new laws restricting access to public information, including vital records, and approved 284 laws that loosened public records access.
