    1. [GENEALOGYBITSANDPIECES] Civil War Recipes
    2. Sally Rolls Pavia
    3. Food historians tell us during the American Civil War the civilians/soldiers of the north generally ate better than the civilians/soldiers of the south. They also tell us the Southern plantation owner's family ate quite differently from its slaves. Members of the Gullah-Geechee community, Ohio factory workers, wealthy Boston merchants, New Orleans Acadians, New Jersey Swedes, Pennsylvania "Dutch," and Maine whaling sailors all preferred/enjoyed/ate different foods. In a nation populated by settlers from many lands there was (as is today) no "typical" breakfast, lunch and dinner menu. At the same time, The Industrial Revolution was making it possible to preserve (cans, bottles) and distribute (railroads) large quantities of food to a greater number of consumers. Indianapolis-based Van Camp's Packing Company supplied canned pork and bean rations to the Union Army. http://www.foodtimeline.org/foodpioneer.html#civilwar Sally Rolls Pavia sallypavia2001@yahoo.com

    3. National Burial Index for England and Wales Online The National Burial Index (NBI) for England and Wales is is an index to help family historians find burial records. It is an ongoing project devised and orchestrated by the Federation of Family History Societies (FFHS). The burial records date back to 1538, the year that Henry VIII was excommunicated from the Catholic Church, up to 1837, the date when civil registration began. These records come from different types of sources: parish registers, bishop’s transcripts (the copies of the original registers made each year for the bishop of the diocese in which they are situated), earlier transcripts or printed registers. Please note that the NBI for England and Wales does not contain memorial inscription records (MIs). Note that this is an index; the results you are presented with will not contain images at the present time. The records that have been transcribed to date are now available (for a $$$FEE$$$) at FindMyPast.com at: www.findmypast.com/national-burial-index-search-start.action?redef=0. 1. [GENEALOGYBITSANDPIECES] The Year Was 1915
    2. Sally Rolls Pavia
    3. The year was 1915 and in Europe, World War I was underway. By now the war had settled into the trenches and it was difficult to make advances on either side. In 1914, the French had used non-lethal tear gas grenades in an attempt to stop German troops that were moving through Belgium. But in 1915, gas warfare took a more sinister turn as the Germans used chlorine gas against allied troops at the Second Battle of Ypres. The U.S. was still neutral in the conflict, but the sinking of the Lusitania by a German U-boat killed 128 Americans, compelling President Woodrow Wilson to address the situation with Germany. Although the incident did not draw America into World War I at that time, it did help sway American opinion and move the U.S. one step closer to entering the conflict. In the Ottoman Empire, under the control of the "Young Turks" since 1913, Armenian scholars, political leaders, and clergy were rounded up on 24 April 1915 and a large-scale genocide of the Armenian population began. It would eventually claim an estimated 1.5 million lives. In Mexico, the revolution that had begun in 1910 with the overthrow of the government of Porfirio Diaz continued, and in 1915, Venustiano Carranza declared himself president of Mexico. Francisco "Pancho" Villa continued to fight and in April was defeated by Carranza's forces led by General Alvaro Obregon. When United States president, Woodrow Wilson, recognized Carranza's government, Pancho Villa began attacks on Americans in Mexico and even staged a night-time raid on a New Mexico town. Wilson responded by sending 12,000 troops into Mexico after him. Led by General Pershing, the troops on horseback never found Villa and were punished by the harsh desert conditions. The Mexican Revolution prompted 900,000 Mexicans to immigrate to the United States to escape the war. In Chicago, Illinois, on July 24, a picnic for the employees of Western Electric turned to tragedy when the S.S. Eastland, which was to ferry the group to Michigan City, Indiana, rolled over in the Chicago River killing more than 800 of the 2,500 passengers aboard. Major hurricanes in the U.S. struck Galveston, Texas, and New Orleans, Louisiana. In New York, Mary Mallon, better known as "Typhoid Mary" was found making a living in the only way she knew how--as a cook--at Sloane Hospital for Women in Manhattan under the name of Mary Brown. Mallon had been detected as the source of a small typhus outbreak in 1906 and was put in quarantine until 1910 when she was released under the promise that she would no longer work as a cook. The 1915 transgression landed her back in quarantine where she would live out her life. One of America's favorite dolls, Raggedy Ann, was born in 1915, the creation of cartoonist Johnny Gruelle. 1. [GENEALOGYBITSANDPIECES] Holocaust Survivors and Witnesses Indexed Online
    2. Sally Rolls Pavia
    3. Holocaust Survivors and Witnesses Indexed Online The new web site of the University of Southern California's Foundation Institute includes a searchable index of 52,000 Holocaust survivors and witnesses in 56 countries. You can search for a person born before, during, or after a certain time, city and country of birth, or state and country of interview. You can view samples of some interviews and locate institutions that provide access to all the full interviews. Here is the announcement posted on their web site: As part of the expansion of its educational work, the USC Shoah Foundation Institute has redesigned its website and made new educational resources available online. With the goal of delivering testimony-based resources to the widest possible audiences, the new website is easier to explore, the video player used to view testimony clips is larger, and core elements like the Online Testimony Viewer have been revamped. The website also offers new tools and content, including an interactive map of locations around the world at which people can view testimonies or search the entire Visual History Archive, and a section where visitors can find educational resources in languages other than English. Another resource now available is Segments for the Classroom, a set of seven testimony clip reels (six in English and one in Spanish) that educators can download and incorporate into their own classroom lessons. The clip reels, each of which include testimony from one or more survivors and range from 17 to 33 minutes in length, cover a variety of topics including: Auschwitz II-Birkenau, The Holocaust through the Eyes of Child Survivors, Facing Persecution as a Jehovah's Witness, The Sobibor Uprising, The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, The Auschwitz II-Birkenau Sonderkommando, and The Experience of Survivors who Emigrated from Europe to Latin America (in Spanish). "The Institute supports scholarship and education throughout the world," Douglas Greenberg, Institute Executive Director, said. "We hope we have created an online destination that is a valuable resource for educators, researchers, scholars, students, and the general public interested in using first-person testimony as an educational tool." The Institute worked with Evenson Design Groupto create the new website, which launched this week. To explore the resources and information available on the new site, log on at www.college.usc.edu/vhi.

    3. BT is putting its entire archive of old phone books online for genealogists, or anyone else, to browse. The phone books date back to 1880 and contain 280 million names. They can be used to track down relatives, but you can also use the service to find out if your house has ever had any famous, or infamous, residents. The first phone book contained 248 names but no numbers - callers were expected to call the operator to get connected. All books before BT's privatisation are public records. The service is available through http://www.ancestry.co.uk.

    2. Sally Rolls Pavia
    3. [Our Society here in the Sun City, AZ area] The West Valley Genealogical Society near Phoenix, Arizona has "won" a local contest, although not one they are bragging about. The society has been selected as the winner of the FastSigns' 2007 Ugliest Sign Contest. The West Valley Genealogical Society owns and operates one of the largest genealogy libraries in Arizona, staffed entirely by volunteers. According to Dorothy Sprague, president of the society, "Many of our customers have had a hard time locating us because of our poor signage." "Winning" this contest isn't all bad, however. They won a new sign. FastSigns will design and produce a brand new sign valued at $5,000 for the Genealogical Society, Deborah Campbell, owner of FastSigns on Bell Road, announced. I suspect the new sign will be much nicer looking that the old one. Posted by Dick Eastman on December 01, 200

    1. [GENEALOGYBITSANDPIECES] Christmas Customs in New Hampshire in 1771
    2. Sally Rolls Pavia
    3. Do you wonder sometimes what our ancestors were doing to celebrate Christmas? Colonial Williamsburg Journal holiday issue 2007 printed a law passed in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Dec. 23, 1771. The law prohibited assembling in a riotous or tumultuous manner beating drums, firing guns or "hallowing and huzzaing" the day before Christmas or Christmas day. It also prohibited throwing clubs at fowls or shooting fowls in any public place where a human might be put into danger. And no boys were to be playing ball in the streets where they might break windows. It also prohibited gaming for money or playing for money in public places. Riding horses or driving carriages in the streets at more than 5 miles per hour was prohibited. Punishment for anyone breaking this law was a fine not to exceed 5 shillings, or imprisonment not to exceed 48 hours or being set in the stocks not to exceed 2 hours. Boys under the age of 12 were exempted from the punishment. Evidently all these activities were common or there would have been no need for a law to prohibit them. Such fun. Lets go "hallowing and huzzaing and beating drums in the street this year and see what happens. :-) ***************************** Sally Rolls Pavia sallypavia2001@yahoo.com List Owner: GENEALOGYBITSANDPIECES-L-request@rootsweb.com Archives: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/GENEALOGYBITSANDPIECES "All incoming and outgoing email checked by Norton Anti-Virus"

    3. Getting ready to leave Wed for a 9-day trip to Washington, DC on research trip. Planning on spending most of my time at the DAR headquarters looking up info for myself and two friends from here in Sun City. Have been working, barely though, on my DAR paperwork so I can join the DAR. Am hoping this will give me a push. Unfortunately, have a cast on my foot so not sure how much sightseeing I'll get done; had wanted to spend several days just wandering. Do plan to take my laptop with me, am too spoiled to leave it home. Then, come evening - will do some data entry; if I don't doze off first. Might even get the opportunity to post some info while I'm gone.
