    3. Hello, Dee. I am new to genealogy and have run into a deadend tracing a realative's Scottish roots. It's as if she's a ghost. Supposedly immigrated in 1887 - perhaps to Canada. Any suggestions on how and where to look would be much appreciated. 3. Hi Nina, I don't know too much either, but I suggest you go to Ellis Island & put in what you do know about the people you are researching. It took me years to find one of my grandmothers & just by chance found her arriving using her maiden name. My grandfather came thru Galveston, TX so that is another place to look. Google 'Steve Morse' & you will see the web site information that he uses. About searching. Good luck! 3. Alex, Thanks... So, have you found the Google sites feature useful? I'd love to have you and others on the list contributing to the project I started, too. I also need feedback on the advertising I put up. Is it too intrusive? Anyway, I'd love folks to contribute either by uploading a GEDCOM, or suggesting ideas, helping to administer the site - meaning remove spammers and people who post worthless content... anyway, just knowing people are using the site would mean a lot to me and I'm always open to suggestions for fixing it. The site again is http://my-family-lineage.com/wiki/Main_Page I took Cora's suggestion and started a FAQ page. Can anyone give me advice on sharing this with others and getting them to join. I don't want to spam any lists or message boards, I just want to find the appropriate places to announce the project/website and encourage people to join. Also, I want to be the biggest site of this kind. There is one other similar site called Familypedia at http://familypedia.wikia.com. They have 110,089 pages. I'm halfway there! And I just started. If anyone needs help uploading a GEDCOM please let me know. If I had maybe 5 or 6 more Gedcom files, I'd be there. Maybe, I'll search for more public Gedcom files for famous people. 3. Bruce, I have found the Google sites feature very useful. The command operator "allintext" is very useful when doing a Google search. This operator restricts results to those containing all the query terms you specify in the text of the page. As for your advertising, I have three adsnense ads on each page. I only use Google Adsense ads. I used Clicksor for a short time and gave it up. Adsense is so much easier to manage. I noticed the "Ancestry.com" ads on your website. Since my website advertises free ancestry, "Ancestry.com" complains that I'm hurting them. I had to filter them out. Be very careful with Adsense. Never click on your own ads. They will drop you in a heart beat. I suggest you place three adsense ads on your pages. You might as well get paid for your creativity. I am in the process of moving, so computer usage for me in the next two weeks will be very limited. When things get settled I will spend move time checking out your website. 3. Cora, I really appreciate your feedback. I have paid close to $1000 maybe more to get this project to work well. It combines two of my interests, genealogy and the Semantic Web. I'll have to get to describing the Semantic web and how that can offer very new features. I am a web developer and/or web designer but I didn't know Perl programming and then I found some software that would allow people to import their GEDCOM files. He also helped with a few other things. The page that allows people to Browse by Surnames needs some work. It is a mess now because it has thousands of names one after the other in this list that goes on forever. I asked the person I am working with if we could have just the letters of the alphabet and when a person clicks on that letter they see all the Surnames that start with that last name. Or one can browse based on Families. I had not thought of a FAQ but if that is something someone will look for then I will put that there. I need to talk to others also about how to make the site more useful for blind folks. There needs to be easy ways to tab from one field to another, one choice to another. I'm going to start adding some affiliate ads and other stuff to try to cover my costs. With all the funds I put into this I sure how no one gives up on me and instead gives me a chance to get it right as it were. Sometimes you want to get things right before you share it with others but you never know what will be right for everyone until you start letting people use it. Assuming I get this working very well, I will have something powerful to add to my portfolio, so in that way it is worth the investment. Thanks, and please, invite others... 3. Cora, And others... I am sorry you had problems. It is good for me to get feedback on how to make the site as easy to use as possible. There are some things you can do: Start on the front page and you will see 2 ways to get started. You said you went to a talk page, was that after logging into the site? On every page you see a menu up top that says Main Page, Enter New Person or Edit Existing Person Recent Changes Upload and Import GEDCOM and Help. This is also described on the home page. There should be a menu on the home page also that shows links to 2 ways to get started. Again the link is http://my-family-lineage.com/wiki/Main_Page 1) Upload your GEDCOM - if you've saved your family tree online or in a software program, you can export it to GEDCOM and import it. 2) Start with a name of someone and build your tree from there. This might be best for someone who is just starting out. Other features: Browse by Surname - this is a link on the home page. You will see a long list of surnames. Some are all caps and this has to do with how they were stored in a GEDCOM file. I might want to change this page because the list just goes on and on and it would be better to Give a person an option for just going to the letter of the alphabet that corresponds to the surname they are seeking. Search - this box is up top of every page. If you just want to enter a name there, you can do that. This is just an alternate way to find people. Other features could be added as people use the site, like yourself, and recommend features that would make it better. We are always open to that kind of feedback to fix the site and make it more user friendly and useful. Thanks for looking at the site and offering feedback, Bruce -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Cora Miller Sent: Tuesday, February 21, 2012 1:54 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [GENEALOGY4DUMMIES] A Free, Easy to Follow, Ancestry Website I went to the site and created log in information how do I use it for genealogy? 3. Alex, Thanks for the resources and I hope you will add my site. I'm going to tell people about it in the next post. My project is called "My Family Lineage" and it is located at: http://my-family-lineage.com/wiki/Main_Page. It is free and we do ask people to register because otherwise anyone can go in and vandalize the pages. Registration tends to limit that. This site uses some cutting edge Semantic Web technology but not all the features of this technology are fully realized. So, the site will be expanding in its feature offering. So, far, just a few weeks after creating the site, there are some 40,000 to 50,000 pages. I'd love to get people wanting to use the site and benefiting from the features offered, sharing their knowledge and information.
