I think I was told that the NEHGS goes up to 1915, is this correct? I forget. If so, I'd love to find a birth record for Adrienne E PRATT, born 12 July 1912 in Massachusetts. I do not know the names of her parents, or the exact city of birth. I'm hoping this record will help with that. Hello. I'm starting out working on a friend's family. I don't have too far back yet, so could use some help. I have a Francis X(avier) DELANO, born 15 sep 1922 in Massachusetts. He would be about 7 at the time of the 1930 census. I do not yet know his parents names. I also do not know precisely where in Massachusetts they were from. It is likely they were from eastern Mass, possibly Suffolk/Essex/Middlesex county areas, but I cannot be more precise than that. Francis had a brother Robert, born 15 sep 1925 in Massachusetts. So they should likely be together with the family. again, i don't know the parents names, though my friend recalls being told it was "something funky".. so I take that to mean it was likely a somewhat unique (or old) name. I know it's vague but I'm hoping someone will have some luck, since 1930 isnt indexed on HeritageQuest (where i search). Thanks in advance. -- ~*~ Allyssa (New England, USA) ~*~ (I am house-bound, so can only search from home. Author: luvzsun Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.researchresources.lookups.lookups/3262.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The following was excerpted from a featured story in "Catholic New York", (http://www.cny.org) July 6, 2000: "Most New York City Catholics of that era (1840 ) were poor immigrants. The Irish were concentrated in lower Manhattan, especially in the Sixth Ward, the "Bloody Auld Sixth," as it was called, where it was alleged that there was one grog shop for every six inhabitants. It is a matter of dispute among historians whether these Irish Catholic immigrants were regular churchgoers, but there can be no doubt about their generosity to the Church despite their extreme poverty. Many lived in rickety tenements without adequate light or sanitation that stood next to slaughter houses, stables and breweries. The men found work as day laborers, stage-coach drivers, construction workers or longshoremen, while the women often were employed as domestics. Most of the clergy who ministered to them were also Irish-born, like Father John Power, the pastor of St. Peter's Church on Barclay Street. A notable exception was Father Felix Varela, the Cuban-born pastor of Transfiguration Church on Mott S! treet, who was enormously popular with his Irish congregation." Fulcher who married George W. Sprinkle, 9 Jan 1849, Smyth Co., VA. Phantom would like a copy of the marriage record. I am a Sprinkle researcher and have George W. Sprinkle & Emaline in my database. I do not have a photocopy of the original record, but I'm sure you could write to the courthouse and request a photocopy. Their marriage does appear in the VA Marriages on Ancestry: Virginia Marriages, 1740-1850 GEORGE W. SPRINKLE EMALINE D. FULCHER 9 Jan 1849 Smyth Co., Virginia I also have the following in my Notes, which suggests the marriage bond was obtained on 9 Jan 1849 and that the minister/marriage official never got around to reporting the actual marriage back to the courthouse (e.g.: "no return") - so whether they actually married on the 9th of January or a few days later, we may never know. Smyth Co., VA - 1832-1853 Marriage Register Pg. 30 George W. Sprinkle & Emaline D. Fulcher Bond: 9 Jan 1849 Married: no return As far as when Emaline was born, the only clue as to her year of birth of which I am aware is her age on the 1850 census which, as you posted, is 24. She died before 1860 so we can't compare to another census. So a circa date of about 1826 is a good estimate. As you say, we don't know if she's had her birthday that year. . .plus ages on census records are often incorrect by a couple years one way or the other. As far as finding her parents, have you looked at wills for Fulchers in Smyth Co. Perhaps she or her children (if she pre-deceased her parents, which is likely) are mentioned as daughter or grandchildren. One person who has done research on the Sprinkle line has a lot of false data so I am not certain the date listed is correct. Emaline married Sprinkle, George Washington 9 January 1849 in Mt. Carmel, Marion, Smyth County, VA and is listed on the 1850 census as being 24 years of age; however, she could have been born in 1825 and had not attained her 25th year at the time of said census. If there is anyone who volunteers to do research in that area for that time period, or who has definitive proof of the marriage [i.e. copy of marriage doc.], please let me know. I am trying to locate the names of her parents. Thanks! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
