You didn't say how strong the matches are. In the event that the apparent relationship between A and E works out to something like 3rd cousins or more remote (and even occasionally for 2nd cousins once removed?), be aware that, just by the luck of the draw, something like 10 percent of REAL 3rd cousins don't share significant segments. I have a couple cases like that in my own genealogy. As long as the two kits of supposed 3rd cousins that don't match, do in fact match the other 3rd cousins, and all the other combinations match as expected, and the shared segments make sense, that's nothing to worry about. However, if the apparent genealogical relationship of the two non-matching kits is closer than that, you will have to work harder, and possibly gather more evidence, in order to be confident that the particular tree you believe to be the correct one is actually the right solution. Be sure to explore all the possible trees that could explain your results, and keep track of the reasons why you rule out each of them! I found an oddity and I know how I wouldexplain it in tree form but not when we have DNA involved. I'm working onthis for an adoptee and have been triangulating DNA matches. I have 5 people involved in this and have trees for 3 of them. I don't wantto use their names so I'm labeling them A-E. A, B, C, D are all connected via DNA. I have trees for A & B. B, C, D, E are all connected via DNA. I have a tree for E. A and E are not connected via DNA but do share a surname (and locale) intheir trees that is also prevalent in the tree for B. C & D involveadoptions and know nothing about their trees. I found the connections via GedMatch and did a one-to-one check for A andE, nothing. Is it possible that there is a match but the cM is so low thatit doesn't register? Or is it that they're related through a differentsurname and I just haven't found it yet? I'm hoping that someone might giveme a new way to look at this. I believe the two of you have answered my question, in that the three matches with trees are at best 3rd to 4th cousins and I think all but one relationship are less than 300 cM. I thank you for your time and I promise I'm trying to absorb all of this as quickly as I can. :) Gina Heffernan Rusk County, Texas <https://www.avast.com/sig-email?utm_medium=email&utm_source=link&utm_campaign=sig-email&utm_content=webmail&utm_term=icon> Virus-free. www.avast.com <https://www.avast.com/sig-email?utm_medium=email&utm_source=link&utm_campaign=sig-email&utm_content=webmail&utm_term=link> <#DAB4FAD8-2DD7-40BB-A1B8-4E2AA1F9FDF2> On Fri, Dec 21, 2018 at 11:23 AM realmac--- via GENEALOGY-DNA < genealogy-dna@rootsweb.com> wrote: > You didn't say how strong the matches are. > In the event that the apparent relationship between A and E works out to > something like 3rd cousins or more remote (and even occasionally for 2nd > cousins once removed?), be aware that, just by the luck of the draw, > something like 10 percent of REAL 3rd cousins don't share significant > segments. Gina, use the cMs table here to understand the possible relationships with each person: https://dnapainter.com/tools.
