It has been awhile since I've used ySearch, but I've just noticed that when I try to send a message using "Contact this user", I am getting "500 - Internal server error". Have others noticed this, and if so, do you know if there are any workarounds? Thanks in advance, Greg
Greg, I had 2 failed attempts yesterday to send an email to a YSearch user. They also appear in a DNA project with a low kit number, I wondered if their email address might have changed since they entered information on YSearch, causing the failed contact attempt. I don't understand computers, and computers don't understand me. I don't know what various error messages mean. As to work arounds, if I can't contact someone via YSearch, I put together all the known information about the person from YSearch, FTDNA Projects etc, and see if I can find out any more information from Rootsweb trees, phone directories, Facebook, surname message boards, googling, etc. I do often have success from these alternative directions. As I know the marker scores for the missing YSearch users, I have a look through 3 projects I administer for any participants who are 12 marker exact matches, and if I find one, I am able to look for their matches in the FTDNA customer database, and if the missing person turns up as a FTDNA customer database match, then sometimes that gives me a means of directly contacting them. If the missing person is listed in a surname or geographic or haplogroup project, sometimes I have emailed the project administrator, and appealed to their good nature, and asked if they would forward on a message to them. I know project administrators are busy people, so I always try easy alternatives before contacting them, I always look at a failed attempt to contact someone via YSearch as a challenge! It is more fun trying to find an alternative way to contact someone or their family, than doing crossword puzzles. As long as I am trying to find alternative means, I don't have time to feel frustrated. I use my iPad a lot, and many FTDNA web site functions don't work on iPads. Just try ordering a test, or opening a FTDNA sale coupon by an iPad, and you will learn the definition of "frustrating". If I have a failure at interacting with FTDNA systems from my iPad, I usually climb my stairs, blow the dust off of my desk top computer, and have another try. FTDNA should have a large public health warning on the top of all of their web pages stating that using iPads to interact with FTDNA web sites may cause damage to a persons mental health. Some functions do work on iPads, so when individual features don't work on iPads, you do not always immediately realise that the cause of the problem is FTDNA incompatibility with iPads. John.
