    3. Dear Doug, GEDmatch doesn't provide a way to download the phased data. It works nicely. But ... is there any way to download these things? I could use its data to phase some parts of me that I have been unable to find comparison files for. I have found people with all the necessary parts, but getting their files, and even contacting them, has proven almost impossible. And some that I do have have no genealogy files to help. But they do the job with Lazarus. Doug McDonald

    3. https://www.usnews.com/news/us/articles/2018-11-15/dna-firm-schooled-in-war-zones-helps-id-california-fire-victims By Gabriella Borter (Reuters) - The remains of victims charred beyond recognition in the California wildfires are being identified by a pioneering DNA analysis company that primarily works in war zones and crime scenes. ANDE, the only Rapid DNA analysis company approved by the FBI for work on military, forensic, homeland security and intelligence projects, was hired by the Butte County Sheriff's office to identify remains of some of the 56 people killed in northern California's Camp Fire. Coroner-led recovery teams, cadaver dogs and a National Guard contingent scouring debris from the deadliest fire in California's history turn over tissue and bone fragments to the ANDE team, which is able to generate DNA IDs in under two hours through Rapid DNA analysis. Traditional techniques typically take weeks to generate a DNA ID. "People have experienced so much loss and it's not over yet," said ANDE's chief communications officer, Annette Mattern. "To be able to at least help some families know what the situation is will hopefully help in some small way."

    3. The transfer fee is $19 at FTDNA - so it is like testing at FTDNA for $19 You currently can transfer an ancestry or older 23andMe test to MyHeritage and LivingDNA for free - though MH is going to start charging on Dec 1st. 3. I agree, although this price is the lowest I've ever seen which makes me wonder whether it is likely to be lower on Black Friday.  One possibility is that shipping fees could be reduced or waived. DNA Heritage has the same price and shipping is waived on two kits or more, but I don't know whether My Heritage Kits include return postage. Lindsey     Hi Lindsey. Normally the price is less with the black Friday sales. I have noticed that ancestry, living dna, my heritage and ancestry have all had sales on this month and wonder if they are all trying to grab Christmas sales before the competition (also to grab the shoppers who start and finish their shopping for Xmas early). I won't be surprise if the black Friday sales are lower about a week after this current sale ends and that it launches the usual Christmas sales. Karen

    1. [DNA] length varies
    2. Eric S Johnson
    3. Why do the Big Four PGSes (and GEDmatch) produce sometimes-quite-different lengths for the same HIR? (I.e. Mom and DNA cousin N have both sent spit kits in to each of the four, and share a nice, solid HIR on all four PGSes . sometimes they agree, but other times they don't: on one it's 26 cM, on another it's 28 cM, on another it's 30 cM, and on another it's 32 cM.) They all give the same start and end points (in megabasepairs) for the HIR . but they somehow differently measure the distance between those endpoints. And on what does this variation depend? Is there a pattern, or does it depend on random things we can't see or control for? Does it depend on who did your DNA? I.e. if you send spit kits in to 23andMe and AncestryDNA, then copy both of them to MyHeritage, will the same HIR you share with DNA cousin X (on MyHeritage) be different lengths, and if so, why? (Yes, I know 23andMe's SNP density's lower, but why would affect the HIR's length by so much?) (AFAICT, none of these variations have a material effect on genetic genealogy. I'm just curious.) Best, Eric

    3. Hello Richard Thank you for your comments. Yes it is possible that I missed something in the registration process.! However having said that I am always very careful and pedantic about reading instructions and making sure I know what I am signing up for. I usually opt out of receiving further contact always if it is by phone so it is unlikely that this is the case. Given that my registration for My Heritage was completed online and not by phone I would have thought email would be the appropriate way to offer special deals. Keep in mind that My Heritage did not call me once but dozens of times at all hours over a long period mostly hanging up as soon as I answered. I do not and will not deal with Ancestry as I do not like their aggressive marketing tactics so I won't be bothered by them! I hope! Kindest Regards Rhonda -----Original Message----- From: Richard Weiss <1navy.gator@gmail.com> Sent: Friday, 9 November 2018 3:14 PM To: genealogy-dna@rootsweb.com Subject: [DNA] Re: My Heritage Rhonda I'm sure My Heritage will follow through. I often work with them as part of DNAAdoption and they have always been good with their word to me. I would like to point out that you probably gave them permission to call you when you registered with them. There is a small box you had to mark saying don't contact me that probably got overlooked in the registration process. In that case, the do-not-call registry does not apply because you gave permission and technically it still does not apply. This applies to any company you do business with and do not explicitly opt-out of being contacted. However, the ethical companies, My Heritage being one of them, will not contact you after you tell them to stop. Just want to help make sure you understand that companies can still call if you have given them permission to contact you in the past. By the way, ancestry does the same thing (has permission to call and calls a lot) so it isn't just My Heritage.
