A year ago, I would've ... 1) do a normal atDNA test with AncestryDNA, since their DNA results seems the most "generic" (easily copy-able to all of GEDmatch, MyHeritage, and FTDNA), and then 2) download my AncestryDNA spit kits results, and upload them to Promethease for USD12. ... and that's still what I'd do now, but I haven't done it for a year so I haven't checked right now to see whether "it's the same as it used to be" (which was good--much like "the old 23andMe" except not nearly as polished). Best, Eric
I believe that only 23andme offers testing on health issues And 23andme is strictly limited to specific health issues. Remember that 23andme was shut down and put out of business for many months because the Food and Drug Administration said they did not have a license to practice medicine. After tremendous objections 23andme was allowed to reopen on Family Tree and genealogy issues. Now after litigation against the FDA they have offered tests on just a few rare conditions which your friend probably does not have. Thank you all for your suggestions. Marleen Van Horne
Hi Marleen, Best is to do a Full Genome Sequencing as the number of health related SNP’s is limited with 23andMe to those that they targeted first. FTDNA doesn’t test health, so you can’t even get the APO-E for Alzheimer with them. Ancestry has started to check some but that’s also way more limited than 23andMe as it’s mainly some traits. I have a friend who would like to test for health issues. What company do we like and what test? I did not jump to 23andme because of the limited rang of their test, since the encounter with the FDA. Thanks, Marleen Van Horne

I ordered through Amazon on November 24th and received the split kit on December 2nd. My sample was delivered to Spectrum DNA in Utah on December 7th. They appear to be a contract organization for delivering and accepting sample kits and have their own branded collection kit. Incidentally, I found the cap on the blue preservative solution VERY hard to open -- I eventually cut off the "bow tie." http://www.spectrum-dna.com/products/dna-collection The status is still given as " Waiting confirmation from Dante Lab." I'll post a note in the WikiTree thread to see if others have different notices. Ann Turner On Fri, Dec 14, 2018 at 3:21 AM Andreas West <ahnen@awest.de> wrote: > Thanks for the feedback. I'd like to share my experience with Dante Labs (see also this post https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/719230/a-30x-full-genome-sequence-for-199-169-150 ) so that everyone can make an informed decision if you want to buy from this company or not as they are running another promotion right now. On the 18th of November I've order their Black Friday offer which is described above. Please note that I was one of the first to order as I saw their advertisement about a Black Friday offer with a countdown of a several hours on their website. I've received their confirmation email immediately. Others including Edison Williams <https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/user/Williams-49144> got their spit kit within the next couple of days while I didn't get anything. I was very patiently waiting and reached out to them only 14 days after the order. I was told by Paul from Dante Labs that: "during our Black Friday Special Week, we had many more orders than expected. As a result, some orders have been delayed." Today is 14th of December and I still haven't even received an email notification that the spit kit is on the way. So it hasn't left their office, as they claim this is their standard process. I have therefore demanded that my order is cancelled and I get my money back. Let's see how that customer experience will work as so far this has been a very, very disappointing experience. In my feedback on the 4th of December I've told them that I'd expect that spit kits are send out in the order they have received them. So first customer gets the spit kit first. Clearly that wasn't the case for me. For transparency, I've ordered on 18th of November 2018 at 10:51PM (22:51) in the GMT+7 timezone. Given that their price was way below the usual cost for a FGS DNA test and most likely their profit is very small, if they make one at all, I'd rather would like my money back as it seems they aren't able to fulfill those customer orders. For the record, I never had such a negative experience on any sales offer with 23andMe, FTDNA or Ancestry from whom I've bought DNA tests before. I know of at least one instance where someone was tested twice at FTDNA and has two DNA kit ids for the same person. I don't know which test they took, but it was a woman who did this. It was posted in one of the genealogy groups on Facebook. That's interesting. It certainly looks like equivalent results were achieved. I'm not familiar with Ion Torrent -- I wonder how it would compare with Illumina in detecting heteroplasmy. This is unrelated news, but Ion Torrent is a product of Thermo Fisher Scientific. LivingDNA has just switched to a new chip made by Affymetrix, acquired by Thermo Fisher a couple of years ago. List It is unusual to find duplicate submissions being made; but this strange submission has apppeared on the GenBank database. In February 2018 a private submision by made by a FTDNA customer: MG893912(India) FTDNA Haplogroup T2 14-FEB-2018 A73G T195C A263G 315.1C G709A A750G A1438G G1888A A2706G T4216C A4225G A4769G A4902G A4917G C7028T G8697A A8860G T10463C C10948T A11251G G11719A A11812G G13368A A14233G C14766T G14905A A15326G C15452A A15607G G15928A C16114T T16126C C16294T C16296T T16325C T16519C and this sequence was obtained, presumably, by FTDNA using its Illumina-based 'Next-Generation-Sequencing' method. But today this duplicate submission has been indexed: MG873444 FTDNA Haplogroup T2 08-DEC-2018 A73G T195C A263G 315.1C G709A A750G A1438G G1888A A2706G T4216C A4225G A4769G A4902G A4917G C7028T G8697A A8860G T10463C C10948T A11251G G11719A A11812G G13368A A14233G C14766T G14905A A15326G C15452A A15607G G15928A C16114T T16126C C16294T C16296T T16325C T16519C and appears to have come directly from FTDNA and is marked as a 'test' using an 'Ion Torrent' method. I can wonder what purpose is behind this submission. Was this sequence chosen at random for a new testing method ? Ian www.ianlogan.co.uk
List First, a thanks to all the posts of support. Thank you. If anyone want to make a database of the 46,200 mtDNA sequences presently on the GenBank database, the lists of all the sequences are available by downloading the source files of 14 'Checker' program. See: http://www.ianlogan.co.uk/sequences_by_group/l0a1a_genbank_sequences.htm I always use WORDPAD or Notepad+ to search my database with 'Word wrap' off. Do ask if you have problems. What I'm going to do is introduce a well-phased "evil twin" that's the same in both paternal and maternal files. Identical matches in both could then be disregarded. As I said, HUGO is easiest but "he" is Euro. I will eventually find an Afro, Asian, or N.A. file that is phased and public, and can use that. The problem here is how to create a synthetic kit that will be acceptable to FTDNA. We don't know what kind of "sanity checks" FTDNA used when rejecting Doug's files, perhaps too much homozygosity. A typical file would have about 70% homozygous SNPs, so Doug needs to introduce some spurious heterozygous SNPs that would never generate a false match.
