    1. [DNA] Question on shared matches
    2. Kerrie Alexander
    3. Hi I found a 4th cousin 3 times removed (Brian) through a DNA match with Ancestry. This is through my paternal grandfather's maternal grandmother and her brother who is Brian's ancestor (hope that makes sense). When I looked at the shared ancestry of Brian we only share two matches who are closely related to him. Why did other matches I have on my paternal grandfather's side not show up as matches with Brian? Does this mean that I have my great great grandmother's DNA which I share with Brian but my other cousins on my grandfather's side do not have this DNA? Hope this question makes sense but it is something that is puzzling me. Many thanks Kerrie

    3. Once a week I log in to my MyHeritage account and take a look at each of my nine senior/primary kits. For each, I just scan through the matches (leaving the default "sort by shared cM," even though it seems likely much of what MyHeritage identifies as (smaller) shared HIRs are either non-existent or IBS) up to the point where MyHeritage says "DNA Matches listed below are lower quality matches that should be viewed with skepticism" (this cutoff appears to be at "40 cM shared DNA"). Every time I reach out to someone for the first time, I put a note on the match using the note-making feature in the upper-right-hand corner of the match (in this matchlist); that way, when I make my weekly matchlist visit, I can scan through looking for the new ones to contact. When I find a new match to contact (one where the "note" corner tab is grey, indicating "no saved note"), I hold down the ctrl key on my keyboard (so that my clicks open new browser tabs) and mouse-click two of the match's buttons: "review match" and "contact." The new "pedigree view" of my match's MyHeritage tree is available under "review match," as is the new ICW list Lorna mentioned. (The "family view" (Ancestry's term) is accessible from the "review match" but it's so hard to read that I rarely visit it.) > -----Original Message----- > From: GENEALOGY-DNA [mailto:[email protected]] On > Behalf Of Jim Bartlett > Sent: August 29, 2017 09.31 > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: [DNA] MyHeritage > > Lorna > > Thanks - how do we access the pedigree view?

    3. Jim >>Trees of any size are difficult to scan for Common Ancestors).<< You probably know this, but some other readers may not. Admittedly it's not a quick scan, but at least if you "view match" MyHeritage shows you side by side the surnames you and they share with more detail, and gives you a pedigree view of their tree - if they have more than one person in it anyway And now also an ICW list with details on how each of you match the ICW - totals only of course, not segment data The pedigree view and chromosome browser were both promised at RootsTech in Feb. The pedigree view only just arrived recently, and they are still saying a cb is coming, so one day...... Don't think they've ever promised a download match list option, or a sort by most recent, although they are both on their request list from me - hope more of you also have requested both! I do find that I can sometimes pick up tree data from there that is missing on the other sites. 3. I haven't sent a spit kit in to MyHeritage; all nine of my MyHeritage kits are copied there from other platforms' spit kits. So. It's pretty consistent, for me, that MyHeritage reports segments which none of the other four see. But, that's why I ask. Maybe MyHeritage is reporting to me small yet triangulated segments. (The math doesn't add up, but that's just my math; maybe I'm wrong.) In MyHeritage's early DNA days, I would get matches which literally didn't exist on any of the other platforms. Now, the other platforms agree there's a match, and usually the "largest HIR" corresponds--but the other platforms simply don't see anything else (whatever else MyHeritage is seeing). Sometimes MyHeritage reports only one HIR (thus agreeing with the other platforms). But often it reports 3, 4, 5, HIRs. Hmmm. 3. Dear Kerrie, Ancestry.com only displays the matches who share DNA with people like Brian if they share more than 20 cMs. Your other relatives may not be sharing more than 20 cMs with Brian. A 4th cousin 3 times removed relationship is distant enough that the descendents on that ancestral line may not all share DNA with each other. I suggest you have Brian and your other relatives upload to GEDmatch where you can run the comparisons that you need to run. 3. Hi Eric, Well, you have to look what is compared, in all fairness. If it's a v2 23andMe you compare with an Ancestry or ftdna test at Gedmatch you won't get all matching segments due to the little overlapping markers. If MyHeritage compares two tests from their own testing chip then they should indeed have no problem identifying correct segments. We won't be able to put people who have tested only at MyHeritage into triangulated groups until MyHeritage provides a chromosome browser, people upload to GEDmatch or people test at 23andMe or Family Finder. I have a list of DNA Matches (most with no or very small Trees; Trees of any size are difficult to scan for Common Ancestors). I have lists of many people who share one of my ancestors. Is there anything that links these? A DNA match with Common Ancestry; or people who share a Common Ancestor with some clue as to whether they DNA tested - and/or match. It's like needles in two different haystacks. Help?

    3. Eric, I think MH imputes data, and it appears their algorithm needs some tweaking. 3. This is not my solution but I found it on the internet because I had the same problem. The credit goes to someone else but it worked for me. I highlighted the solution. Loin Date: May 2017 Location: Brisbane Posts: 13 For those of you unable to upload Ancestry raw dna data to FTDNA. The latest I got from FTDNA Customer Support asserted that "reads for specific SNPs are in the wrong locations in the files". This turns out to be rubbish. I imported into Excel a file that would upload and a file that would not. I then got Excel to identify differences between the files. The differences are NOT associated with SNP locations. The differences are purely related to the pre-amble text in the Ancestry raw dna data files. By changing the preamble text, the files will upload. The following preamble is from a file that will not upload: #AncestryDNA raw data download #This file was generated by AncestryDNA at: 05/15/2017 03:51:26 UTC #Data was collected using AncestryDNA array version: V1.0 #Data is formatted using AncestryDNA converter version: V1.0 #Below is a text version of your DNA file from Ancestry.com DNA, LLC. THIS #INFORMATION IS FOR YOUR PERSONAL USE AND IS INTENDED FOR GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH #ONLY. IT IS NOT INTENDED FOR MEDICAL OR HEALTH PURPOSES. THE EXPORTED DATA IS However, this text will upload: #AncestryDNA raw data download #This file was generated by AncestryDNA at: 05/28/2017 23:32:38 UTC #Data was collected using AncestryDNA array version: V2.0 #Data is formatted using AncestryDNA converter version: V1.0 #Below is a text version of your DNA file from Ancestry.com DNA, LLC. THIS #INFORMATION IS FOR YOUR PERSONAL USE AND IS INTENDED FOR GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH #ONLY. IT IS NOT INTENDED FOR MEDICAL, DIAGNOSTIC, OR HEALTH PURPOSES. THE EXPORTED DATA IS Ignoring the different times in line 2, the key changes are: Line 3: "V2.0" instead of "V1.0" Line beginning "#ONLY": add ", DIAGNOSTIC," When I changed the text as above, two Ancestry files that previously failed (many times) to upload, then uploaded at the first attempt. Heaven knows why the FTDNA upload converter concerns itself with the preamble. Clearly GEDMATCH does not because as I and others discovered our unaltered files would readily upload to GEDMATCH. And shame on you FTDNA to assert the problem was related to SNPs being in the wrong location. FTDNA: get your house in order! There is, of course, another issue related to why Ancestry changed the collection version and other text. Ancestry DNA extractions in Feb and 28 May had "V2.0" text, while extractions on 15 May had "V1.0". I am tackling Ancestry on that point. 3. You might consider the possibility that, if she downloaded in the last couple of days, the file may be corrupted. FTDNA is in Houston and hurricane conditions could be affecting communication. She might just try waiting a few days and downloading a new file. The file should be zipped when uploaded to Gedmatch.
