My favorite tip is to look to Mary's son's in law...ie if one of Mary's daughters married a James Brock, for instance, look for a family book on the Brock's...My experience has been that these books, for some unknown reason, are very generous in providing family info on the mother-in law. One of mine went back 3 generations. Another included a middle initial of a family member and with that tidbit I was able to identify the correct family member in a census.
