    3. OK Here is my interpretation. 1st rule never depend on the dates in the IGI. Use them as guidelines not facts. (not everyone knew to put "about" before an estimated date). Assuming that Roger Smith and Alice Bingham gave birth to Esther Smith in 1802 than we can assume Isaac Smith and Esther Andrews are Rogers parents. This is because (1) traditional naming practice is that the oldest daughter by named after her paternal grandmother and (2) there is a reference to Samuel Smith and Diadama Grannis as "relatives". Also Samuel and Diadama were married several years after the birth of Roger thus adding credibility to the previous assumption. At some point Roger may have been living or visiting during a census with Samuel and Diadama and was written on a census as a relative. If you look in the source information you will probably notice that two different people donated the info and that would account for the two separate birth dates. As I said before just my interpretation. With out actually seeing the information I can't be sure. Even then it can be hard to figure it out.
