Hmmm. "The Episcopal Society of Northfield". eh? Following on my earlier comments about the definition of the word "episcopal", it occurred to me that the questioned name might be the name of a Church of England congregation or parish AFTER the colonies gained independence from England but before the Protestant Episcopal Church in the US was established as an autonomous organization. The US version of the Church of England was not formalized until 1789 and until then one supposes that the congregations or parishes replaced the term "Church of England" with various other titles - awaiting the official word. Still, the newly independent Protestant Episcopal Church met with considerable prejudice for some time due to its prior connection with England, so that some groups may have continued a while with obfuscatory names. Not sure what date you have with your "Episcopal Society" reference - but this info may help someone, so am sending it on. Ginny Crawford
