Dorothy Mott <1619> Braintree. IGI has born 1586/1592 Colchester. Will was dated 22 Sep 1669. Believed to be the daughter of Mark Mott (or Motte) & Francis (sic) Gutter of Braintree (SVT p22). Frances on p24. Mark born 25 Apr 1549, buried 14 Dec 1637 Braintree(?). Frances died in Braintree & buried 23 Feb 1615. A Mark Motte is a witness to the will of John 408 (Dorothy's father in law). SVT says Mark Mott's parents were Thomas & Alice (Mead) Mott of Braintree. Thomas Mott is said to have been the owner of Sheme Hall, Lexenden hundreds, in 1599. More Mott details p24-25 SVT. William Hurd Hillyer, author of "James Talcott Merchant And His Times", New York, Charles Scribner's Sons, 1937, says "Dorothy was the daughter of John & Alice Mott, of Eyland and Wiston, County of Suffolk. Her mother, Alice Mott, was a daughter of Thomas Harrington. John Mott was the son of Mark Mott, of Braintree, who traced his ancestry in Essex to John Mott of Shalford, holding land as early as 1375." 1995, According to Richard Clarke Roberts, Connecticut State Library, Dorothy was the daughter of John Mott b. abt 1575 & Alice Harington d. aft 1630. Essex IGI has Thomas Talcott, male, 's' abt 1624 Braintree, John Talcott / Dorothy Mott - we have no record of a son Thomas. >From Morant's Colchester p171/2:- A document for endowing a free school mentions a Robert Mott, a "Bayliff" of the Town of Colchester (1585), who is probably a relation eg. I can't find a Dorothy Smith in Chapin's book about Glastenbury. A number of Smiths are given. For example: Rev. Henry Smith, who was father of Mary Smith who married Elizur Holyoke; see entries in this tree under these names. Listed on p. 46 by Chapin as residents in Wethersfield from 1634 to 1673 are, besides Rev. Henry Smith: another Henry Smith "went to Stamford" (Hinman's *Puritans*); Jonathan Smith "owned land in Eastbury, 1673"; Joseph Smith; Philip Smith "went to Hadley" (Hinman); Philip Smith (same?) "owned land in Eastbury, 1673; Samuel Smith, Sr. "went to Hadley" (Hinman); Richard Smith, Sr. "owned land in Glastenbury and Eastbury, 1673; Richard Smith, Jr. (Trumbull, II. 520); William Smith (Trumbull, I. 128). Chapin also has (p. 192-3): SMITH, BENJAMIN. SMITH, JOSEPH. SMITH, SAMUEL. These three men were brothers, unless Samuel may be an exception. Richard Smith of Wethersfield, whose will, dated 1680, was proved in 1698, was the son of Richard. Richard, Jr., had the following children, and perhaps others. All these are mentioned in his will, except Benjamin. Samuel, Joseph, Benjamin, Hester, who married a Strickland, and Beriah, who married Richard Fox, Sr. Joseph died without children. ..... Samuel Smith married Jane Tudor of Windsor, Oct. 28, 1680, and had [8 children listed, no Dorothy]. ..... Who Benjamin Smith married, we have not learned." This John Mott was the son of Reverend Mark Mott of Braintree and grandson of Thomas and Alice (Meade) Mott of Bocking, County Essex." --- Sandra Sutphin Olney, *Passengers on the "Lion" from England to Boston, 1632, Bowie MD (Heritage Books Inc) 1992, part 2, p 487 Internet from Tom Harris (cw811@cleveland.Freenet.Edu, 25 Apr 94) gives Dorothy as daughter of Mark MOTT and Mercy TICHBOURNE, source Wright's *History of the County of Essex, England*, but says he got information from a privately published TALCOTT genealogy published in the 1940's. He goes on to to say this Mark's father was also Mark MOTT who married Frances BRETT. This is very confusing, as I have Frances BRETT marrying John PYNCHON/PINCHON b abt 1565 Writtle, Essex, marrying Frances BRETT of Sterling, Essex (this db). This Pynchon was the father of the notable William PYNCHON, original settler in New England. Source is Jacobus & Waterman, *Hale, House and Related Families*, 1952, p 723-4. Another msg from Tom Harris (26 APR 94), after I told him about my entry for Frances BRETT gives: Thomas MOTT/Alice MEAD(E) --> Rev. Mark MOTT/Frances BRETT (Harris says "this is what my source said, but I found it very odd as well") --> Rev Mark MOTT [again, presumably JR]/Mercy TICHBOURNE --> Dorothy MOTT/John TALCOTT. But, as he says, in the *Lion* book, it goes Rev. Mark MOTT/Frances ? --> John MOTT/Alice HARRINGTON --> Dorothy MOTT/John TALCOTT. But according to Jacobus and Waterman, *Hale, House and Related Families*, 1952, p 749-750, the line goes Thomas MOTT/Alice MEADE --> Mark MOTT/Frances GUTTER --> John MOTT/Alice HARINGTON --> Dorothy MOTT/John TALCOTT.
