All, Originally, it was far from a flattering nickname. It is said to have originated from the practice of itinerant Connecticut peddlers selling wooden nutmegs (whittled from any dark wood) as the real thing to their customers in states south of New England. A "nutmegger", then, was a cheat and to "buy a wooden nutmeg" was to fall for a fraud.
